    Hi all

HP offered me an additional 10% discount on any desktop and free 3 year warranty as a good well gesture as on previous Omen deal , I ordered but then was out of stock.

Should I use this discount on this desktop (would only get £60 off) or go for something a bit more expensive, what offers better value ? Happy to pay £1kish
    Cheers

    Depends on your needs.

These are fine for office work with a bit of gaming on the side but aren't optimised for gaming.

A bit of an oversimplification but one way of looking at it is that Dell and HP's budget range are basically office builds with graphics gaming graphics cards and nice-ish aesthetic from a fancy-looking plastic fascia stuck on a very, very cheap office PC like shell; the motherboard limitations and bios limitations are not well suited to gaming compared to a gaming build from Lenovo or, much better, something from Palicomp, etc.

The latter are optimised for gaming (as in you usually get well ventilated cases, which doesn't just reduce performance thermal throttling but potentially quieter, too, as the fans don't have to spin so fast to shift to expel hot air in a well ventilated case), also though you can make these types of PCs 'project PCs' where you try all sorts of hardware modifications/tweaks to get it to perform to the on-paper spec of the components, it takes a lot of work and, time-is-money wise, seems a waste of time (to me, perhaps fun, though, if you enjoy tinkering), especially as after all that work you can't tweak the bios settings to take added advantage of your tweaks; as Linus and others used to point out, you can do all the tinkering you like with a cheap HP or Dell build but you don't get a performance bios from them to take advantage; the bios you get is tailored to the constraints of the hardware/poor thermals, which in a business PC doesn't matter but in a gaming PC, especially if you want the nth degree of performance/quiet matters).

Lenovo used to be in with the likes of Dell and HP but have very significantly upped their game in recent years, so if you must order a gaming PC from a non botique builder rather than from Palicomp, etc, I would look out for a Lenovo gaming PC in sale, or else look to spend well over £1000 on one of HP's midrange gaming PCs that have better thermal management, though still limited bios options.

Worked here but by using my BLC discount, as I signed up with this discount site but like others are saying it now needs proof.

After a lot of messing about (the site goes back to the normal HP site) managed to get this for 574.15 as had £20 off with Paypal.

    Many Thanks

    Not bad for a prebuilt

These are bad for airflow so you will see high temps, coupled with an annoying small fan . The box is nice and small and discreet though.
Selling the HP parts if you want to upgrade will also be a faff..
You can buy a lot of pc for £600. I wouldn't recommend it to many people, but I can see why some may want it.

That's not a bad price for that spec.

Decent for the amount of money. Pretty sure this is capable enough at 1080p and maybe 1440p with some settings turned down

Tempted by this. Spec is perfect for what I’m looking for. Just concerned about the thermals based on some of the comments. Can anyone suggest an alternative with similar performance but maybe less of a concern with thermals? Or is the heat management not really an issue with this?
