Another CUH-ZVR2 post, another excuse to link this refurb guide

Obviously you're dealing with used goods, and lord knows how nasty controllers and peripherals get, especially anything sitting on your face like VR. Mine had earwax and other dried mystery human fluids on the outer plastics when I bought from CEX last year, but the lenses were in beautiful shape. I recommend giving these a good thorough cleanup: the more you can dismantle before cleaning, the better (though some decent work with some wet wipes and cotton buds might also suffice). Just watch you don't mangle anything and ruin the warranty.

I got one from a previous deal for around £50. It turned up in a good condition and is a great piece of tech. Unfortunately I got really bad motion sickness from it. Was playing gran turismo, felt a bit weird at first but pushed through.. then went over a hill and my brain just went ‘nope’. 🤢

Tried it a few times using the various suggestions to combat the motion sickness but even thinking about using it again makes me feel queezy now

The one thing you're not meant to do is push through it.
If you ever start to feel wobbly, the best thing is to stop immediately, take a small break, then come back to it later when you're feeling normal again.
That's how a lot of people build up their VR legs; basically acclimatising themselves to it.

I'm still waiting for my ps5 adapter Sony!!!!

I’m still waiting for my PSVR games to be backwards compatible on PlayStation VR2 Sony!!!! I've invested a small fortune in PSVR games, and now Sony expect me to just abandon them for the next shiny thing? Not a chance! Before I even consider splurging on PlayStation VR2, my current games better be compatible, or I'm outta here faster than you can say "refund." It's like they're daring me to find another hobby!

Seriously, Sony? You'd think a company of their caliber could invest in decent materials for their PSVR headsets. But nope, instead they opt for cheap stuff that's falling apart en masse. Now everyone's dealing with black bits and dust all over their heads and play areas. And if you dare to buy one secondhand, watch out for those scuffed lenses at places like Cex. Talk about unprofessional.

This is addressed in that guide I linked. The black dandruff syndrome can be resolved by simply removing that rubber coating entirely (using a latex or nitrile glove to help scrub off the rubber).

You can then simply wear a cheap sweat headband under the VR headset. If you're feeling brave you could spray a waterproof/sweatproof layer on the bare cushions but IMO that just sounds like a surefire way of getting skin irritation on the contact points.

As for lenses, you'd have to buy in person and inspect for yourself to check which set has the best condition lenses. I think CEX are meant to have a policy on VR headsets where they aren't allowed to sell with scratched up lenses or something, so something in this condition could be returned under those grounds maybe? it was mentioned on another deal recently but need to doublecheck. But as for day to day, avoid using the headset with glasses and see if you can wear contact lenses if you can help it (even though these are marketed as being compatible with spectacles). But also there's am ebay seller making eyeglass guards that you can insert beside the lens mouldings which prevents glasses from scratching at the lenses. Also don't wipe at the lenses with anything other than water. If you must use lens cleaner, apply onto a microfibre cloth first and wipe... never directly onto the lenses.

These are lovely devices but the reality of the second hand market means that you'll likely never happen across unsold stock. These things are cheap but they require some work to meet my personal hygiene and future-proof standards.

Anything else to watch out for apart from scuffed lenses? This seems like a bargain... Unless they're all in pretty bad nick?

Here's a guide. These things are nice but they take some work to make ready again for 2nd hand usage if you're a bit if a perfectionist.

Does it need the camera to work? I will this work straightaway?
    copperspock's avatar
Yeah you need the camera (and the Move controllers for a fair few games).

    Frugal_Infection's avatar
That my drinks aren't caked in other peoples earwax and the glasses are scuffed.

The head foam deteriorates really badly with use. I bought a used and rubbed it all off as it was crumbling away. Sadly no parts available to pry and replace it with a cheapo one.
    RukasuMi's avatar
yeah it would be nice if there was a cheap way to get replacement pads
