People talk about the PS2 being the pivotal point in gaming, it was definitely the first PlayStation

I bought a Retroid Pocket 2S a while back and I'm hooked. I loaded it with games I haven't played in over 20 years; N64, Saturn, Playstation, Dreamcast. It's a worthwhile investment if you don't want a bunch of machines cluttering around. You can do all this emulation on a phone and a bunch of attachments of course, but having it on a compact handheld with the correct screen ratio and slick controls just feels right.

Is there a legal way to get them games?
Or did they come on the device already

The Dreamcast was the best console of this era because it supported VGA, why the picture is so clean. You can hook it up to a PC monitor and it looks amazing! I just wish Sega didn't ditch it as even into the next generation the Dreamcast looked better while the other consoles had muddy graphics.

The Dreamcast was a generation after the PSX so not really 'this era'

I'm sure the first batch that came out had no copyright protection whatsoever on them.

You could just burn a disc and it would play. They quickly rectified that but as usual there was always a way round it.

No online firmware updates in those days

Yup the good old days of chipping lol

So many memories of playing the demos that came with magazines to the death! GTA (1!), Pandemonium, Cooler World, Intelligent Cube, MDK, oh man.
Then the full games, Crash Bandicoot, Metal Gear Solid, Spyro, Tekken 3, Gran Turismo, Tony Hawks, Abe's Oddysee.

K, I'll stop. I can still hear the playstation logo screen so clearly.

Oh what a time to be a kid back then such happy memories that I will take to my grave.

The CD drives die in these quite fast.

You need to turn it upside down to get it to start reading the discs again.

Can this problem be fixed? (edited)
    4hero's avatar
I think you already explained the fix?

The mid nineties were an amazing time for new tech.

1995 - I installed my first CD ROM drive in my PC and was amazed at the opening sequence for Cannon fodder

1996 Installed my first modem in my PC and discovered the internet. (28.8 kbit/s)

1996 bought a PS1 and was amazed to see arcade graphics (Ridge Racer) on my home TV

1997 DVD players were introduced to the domestic market.

I remember the first time I saw the PS1 in person was in HMV in Liverpool running Ridge Racer. It was then I knew I had to have one. And I did.

I zigged when I should have zagged and got a Saturn to go with the house N64, mostly for Sega Rally and Fighting Vipers (edited)

Saturn was gold especially if you were able to import games

Did you not know the harder you press, the faster the car would go in ridge racer?

    Or so my thumbs thought...

Nice to see the top of the PlayStation. A sight I rarely had when trying to get the thing to play games!

Haha, I thought I was the only one that had to turn mine upside down. I thought I was some kind of technical genius when I rescued my broken playstation like that.

I remember 'hacking' my first ever PS1 in my kitchen because the worktop was high enough that I didn't have to bend over to see where I was soldering

I've still got my original PlayStation, the one with the audiophile CD unit that you occasionally seen videos on YouTube about. Doubt the same will be said for my sons Xbox and PlayStation lasting that long with any problems!
    custardy's avatar
Sadly NAND write cycles will likely be a big issue in the future for current gen.I know on the Xbox they are locked to the hardware.
So back to the Xbox 1 days of requiring hacking to replace drives.

You will never get a ps1 in that condition off of cex
  25. clsss's avatar
ps2 is a far better experience than a ps1 if you’re wanting nostalgia… the jump in games and graphics is 10 fold… I own both a ps1 and a ps2 and the ps2 gets far more use.

That moment when people realise that PS1 doesn't have HDMI output and their TV lacks composite or S-video inputs. (edited)

    An adapter costs around £7/8.
  27. jazid's avatar
Great console, but I expect the refund hand market has largely been made redundant by free RPI emulators.
But love reading all the memories... (edited)

Retro gaming prices are coming down thankfully after all that bizarre investments/grading. Super Mario 64 was never worth millions.

I think they have updated its £30 without a controller.
    montblanc's avatar
It says "digital controller (no sticks)". That means it's the original controller that didn't have analogue sticks. IT just has a d-pad. Games that used analogue sticks didn't come until about midway through the console's life.
  30. montblanc's avatar
I still have my original PS1 and the CD drive has died. It costs about £14-20 for a new China made drive on Ali Express depending on which revision you need and I'm wondering if it's just worth getting one of these, or if the cd units on these will die quickly too or already partially dead. When you need to turn the console upside down for it to read, its days are already numbered. That fix doesn't work for very long before the laser is too weak to read that distance too.

Ok dumb question I’m guessing, but can this be hooked up to a lg smart tv, never could got my old wii to work?
    EugeneVictorTooms's avatar
Yes. You'll need an adapter. Same as you would have for the Wii (Wii2HDMI).

    Something like this: kaicolabs.com/pro…er/

I have their Wii and GameCube ones and they're great.

Problem with the PS1 (alongside even graphically superior PCs of the late 90s with 3DFX cards) is the polygon detailing, or lack of it with 3D textures. Most 3D games that you struggled with back in the day with camera angles, ropey controls alongside lack of detail become even more glaringly apparent now, 3D gaming very much was in its infancy and glaring technical limitations.

Add into the mix an LCD screen instead of CRT and things become even worse.

Try playing 'classics' such as 'Tomb Raider' or 'Silent Hill' today as opposed to 2D games that have aged better and don't look so bad on an LCD.
    Helpful567's avatar
For its time, ridge racer on the PS1 was amazing 3D
  34. RickyD's avatar
The original Playstation was cool. It was the first console that adults played as much as kids.

I remember playing Resident Evil in 1996 and being genuinely scared whenever I heard the footsteps of a hunter. The age rating certificates were high for a lot of the games.

Then there was Wipeout with music tracks from Leftfield, The Chemical Brothers, and Orbital.

It was a very cool time for gaming and completely destroyed the Sega Saturn. It didn't stand a chance, despite having some decent games. It couldn't compete. Playstation was advertised and branded really well.

The PS5 by comparison is disappointing. Sony have really dropped the ball this generation. It's not delivering like the previous consoles.

It had 250 games with it.
The games were very cheap at the time...

You just reminded me of Doom. Worst game ever, gave me motion sickness, of course motion sickness was hardly known at the time. It was the worst motion sickness I experienced, it was like going on that spinning thing in the park and trying to walk straight.

The ps2 can play ps1 games and so I suggest buying a ps2 slim if space is at a premium.
