XM4 or xm5 - can someone recommend please
    wubba-lubba-dub-dub's avatar
There are some really good videos on youtube comparing them.
    But basically:
XM4 - Better folding mech (more compact), thicker headband (more padding).
XM5 - More fancy carrying bag, better noise cancelling (8 mics rather than 4). Arguably better audio, but it's more due to the superior noise cancelling).

I went with the XM4s about 2 years ago mostly swayed by the better folding because I travel with them, and am still happy. I figured there is a reason Sony hasn't made the XM4s obsolete yet, it's because it's still selling well and the XM5 isn't obviously better, and that's without taking the price into consideration.

In all honesty though, there isn't much difference in performance.

Bought a pair of these nearly 2 years ago, very comfortable and excellent sound quality. Well worth this price.

If you need new cushions, then I have bought a set of these a month ago, which are comfy and a good replacement: amazon.co.uk/gp/…c=1

I've got a pair of well worn and well loved X1000s. Still going but a bit battered. Is it worth upgrading or should I wait for these to give up the ghost first?
    fleccy's avatar
I’d wait, I went from the xm2s to xm5 and haven’t really noticed any difference.

This or xm5 like new for £205? So confused
I have joined gym and want something good. I am an iPhone user. Please help with suggestions.
    Moorek's avatar
few people in my office use the 4.  Apparently the 5 not as comfortable, and they dont fold.
  9. Red_Shift's avatar
    I prefer the 4’s to the 5’s

The max’s are great I decided to treat myself think I got them new from curry’s for £320 no way would I pay full price still expensive at that…. They are really comfy for me and the spatial sound for films and music is outstanding especially if you have an AppleTV. Sonys are superb though ! (edited)

Love my XM4s, great bit of kit and for £180 they're a bargain. HOT!
    Reuben_BM's avatar
What makes them better than other headphones which are cheaper?
  15. MrsPickleJuice's avatar
is it worth upgrading form the XM3s or should i wait for next gen?
    mumihp's avatar
I still use my xm3s, probably would wait for the next gen as the price will come down more. Hopefully the next gen, folds as that is one thing I don't like about xm5
  16. nostalgian's avatar
Ooooh very good but the £169 price I missed at Sony via Unidays just few months ago was better. I shall wait longer!
    FrugalFergal's avatar
In the grand scheme of things its a £10 difference. You might get hit by a bus tomorrow. Touch wood you dont

Great headphones. Had mine 3 years i think.
  19. mumihp's avatar
Heat. great price. I am still using the XM3, they are a godsend especially on flights as it blocks most of the sounds. If I had to use, it would be XM4, only because the XM5 don't fold.

I know this is a silly comparison but I really love my Soundcore Q30 that i recently bought for £50 on Amazon. I was impressed by the sound and the noise cancelling is nice.

However, I'd be keen to know how these Sony's would compare to the Q30? Would they provide a monumentally improved sound experience? I can see myself using these every day so I'd take a punt on these if people in the know think they're worth investing in.

Edit: I see the XM4 being compared to the Apple Airpod Max at £500
Edit 2: Thank you to @Hypnotoad who shared a XM4 (£179) vs Q30 (£50) video. Blimey... The Q30 must be the best bang for buck over the head wireless headphones. The £500 Airpod Max sounded slightly better than the £179 Sony XM4 which sounded slightly better than the Soundcore Q30.

Conclusion: The £500 Airpod Max sound great. The £179 XM4 sound not far off but if you're on a budget and not a massive audiophile the Q30 at £50 offer amazing bang for buck on all fronts after tweaking the equalisers.

I still think most people would get 90% of the £500 Airpod audio experience for 10% of the price the with the Soundcore Q30 at £50. The Sony XM4 occupies a sweet spot at £179 for those who are happy to pay a little more for a little better compared to Apple's offerings. (edited)

    From rtings.com
The Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless are better headphones than the Anker Soundcore Life Q30 Wireless. The Sony are more comfortable, feel better built, and have a better-balanced sound profile right out of the box. Their active noise cancelling feature can reduce more noise around you, and they have an auto-off timer to help conserve their battery life when not in use. That said, the Anker have a longer continuous battery life.

    Heat added for price

I know it shouldn't matter and it's subjective, but I'm always put off by just how ugly I find them. Can't seem to get past it so Bose or B&O for me.
    jasper132's avatar
Try a set of skins on them, some really good designs out there to personalise them

So what are we going with...the XM4s or the XM5s?
  25. Spockraptor1's avatar
I have XM3s and find they hurt behind my ears after like 20 mins. Anyone have the same issue and any recommendations to resolve, like new pads or are different headphones the only option?
  26. Shabba82's avatar
Very have a 20% offer for selected customers just in case someone has the offer.
I got a pair (new) recently from ebay for 172 so not worth returning for £12 . Not used them as they're a gift

I wonder if these are a decent choice to link up with my Galaxy S23 Ultra?
I was thinking of the PX8's by Bowers Wilks, but these are a tempting price.

could someone maybe recommend me headphones? is this one good?
  32. FrugalFergal's avatar
I tried the Bass Shaker test (streaming on these) and they sound great but my Soundcore Q30 rattle with heavy bass (manually adjusted for bass). Is there such a thing as good or bad bass? The Q30 are super bassy but Im not sure if thats in a good way (edited)
  33. FrugalFergal's avatar
I got mine yesterday and mine are going back today. I didnt find them comfortable for my elephant ears and the clamp force felt weak. Build quality is great as is the ANC. I found the Sony app overly faffy. I much prefer the simpler Soundcore app.

In fact I prefer my £50 Soundcore Q30 over these for comfort and I prefer to over the top bass I get with them. I will miss the ANC on XM4 but I can live without that. I posted a thread on Reddit and it seems not everyone loves these as much as the hype suggests.

I will keep my Q30 until Soundcore come up with a suitable successor which I dont think they currently have. (edited)
    Phil452's avatar
I have some XM3s, previously had the XM4 but I think in a lot of ways they went back with the XM4, no support for AptX etc.

If you don't mind wired earphones I would definitely recommend some Kiwi Ears Cadenza or something similar, apart from that though just stick with your Q30 if you like them - if it aint broke, dont fix it!
