Did you find much plastic / glass bits and the usual rubbish that keep popping up in most top soils sold in places like BnQ etc? Never used Wickes one. Thanks!

Probably luck of the draw but I bought ten bags the other week and every single bag had large stones, twigs, small pieces of plastic and glass, etc.

Lots of reviews on the Wickes website report the same

This stuff I much better than the crap at Homebase. Fine for pots and planters, not bad for lawn work too.

    1 for £2.5 = £2.5 / bag
    3 for £10 = £3.33 / bag

    Don't get it..

That offer was for when it was £4 a bag. If you add three now it comes up as £7.50

Nice one OP. I was hoping that the 3 for £10 offer might somehow stack and give a lower price for 3 but sadly not.

This stuff is 'ok', but sandy though

Good if you've got clay then? I'm sure I watched some YouTube videos where people said that sandy soil can help to break up compact clay soil

Any green-fingered HUKDers know what I should use beneath new turf? I'm currently pulling rocks and half-bricks out of my garden, and want to put a lawn down. The existing soil is sand but I presume it's quite crappy, although it's been pretty fertile for weeds for the last 20 years or so.

Looking at this and also at the compost over here: hotukdeals.com/dea…965

What sort of mix / depth should I be looking at? Any other tips?

This stuff will work, although if you’ve a big are get a bulk bag online. Don’t use compost. Use the best quality grass seed you can. Grass needs minimum 50mm to root in. A sandy mix might not be too bad for grass so your soil could be ok with a thinner layer of new top soil. Lay the soil, level with a heavy duty rake and then lightly rake before adding seed. Use a roller or step over the area to bed seed in. Water twice a day, though little and often is best. In 4-6 weeks you’ll have a nice lawn

Thank you, was going to get some good stuff from near me for £5 a bag. This looks just as good. So ordered 6x

Would this be suitable for a vegetable patch if mixed with compost?
    skippy100's avatar
I use it on my allotment. It’s good stuff

You can order up to 19 bags for £7 delivery, so had to split mine in two orders. Seems to be cheaper than jumbo bags, had 10 bags from last deal a month ago, it looked good quality, no stones etc

You can only have 300kg on delivery before it switches to a bulk delivery

So if you can get to the free delivery threshold while remaining under 300kg, it’d be free.

Good price, B&Q doing the 50L bags 3 for £15 which equals the same. Easier if you need lots.

How much should I order for a 12 sq meter area topping up 50mm thickness in preparation for lawn seeding? Or anyone know how many cubic meters a bag has?
