From O2s Twitter support when I asked for clarification regarding when the price increase will be applied:

"Hi Dev. Anyone joining or upgrading between 15/02/2023 and 22/03/2023 will have the RPI+3.9% adjustment applied to their April 2023 bill onwards. Any connections from 23/03/2023 will not have RPI+3.9% applied from April as it will already be applied to the tariff signed up to."

23/3 appears to be this years date to renew/sign-up to O2! (edited)

This just says it won't be £8 anymore on the 23rd but be £8+RPI+3.9% already....so the same.

Unless new deals come out (which inevitably they will)? (edited)

I renewed after the 25th March last year to avoid the increase. Will be looking to do the same this year
    Canopus's avatar
Thanks, that should come in handy for people on contact.

Will this immediately rise in April?

If so, does anyone know the cut-off for when you can order something and not be subject to this year's price rise?
    alien7's avatar
All contracts will go up in price come April. That's why I usually get a new contract in April, after the price incease!

I signed up to this a few days ago. Anyone tell me if the disney plus is a code or just added to your 02 account?

For existing O2 customers trying to apply this deal to an existing O2 number, from memory, I believe it works if you don't try to choose/set any of the options (Spend cap, Disney, etc.) along the way, just keep going straight through to the end and place the order. You can set those options up later by logging into your account.
Also, I was able to get this deal over the phone on 1st Mar but decided not to take it until later in the month as it is currently subject to RPI increases from April.
    Hope this helps someone.

Update: I just tested this on one of my 2 O2 SIMs and I was able to go all the way up to checkout. I obviously did not hit the checkout button as I plan to wait until the end of this month. (edited)

The agent from O2 just confirmed: After RPI, from April your tariff price will be £9.38 for tariff … I just changed mine to this deal TODAY then he said it will be increased (edited)
    jd121's avatar
I've called o2 3 times and spoke. To multiple agents. The rpi increase doesn't apply if your new contract is from the 23rd of March
  7. mrimac94's avatar
Been with O2 for just over a year on an £8 SIM. Yes - the data speeds are a lot slower than EE, however it’s never been a problem for me with general web browsing/Spotify.

Often travel to London/Birmingham and 5G is fast and shows speeds over 100mbps+. Bonus is that where I live O2 has 5G coverage but EE doesn’t.
    iTisYaBoiii's avatar
Having worked in the telecomms sector, EE invest far more money into new tech compared to the other main UK networks (Three, O2 and Vodsfone). Having said that, will you need those ludicrous data speeds day to day? Absolutely not.

Its just the regular consumer problem of big number = good, despite them paying a premium for a feature that they wont use.same problem with phones having 16GB of RAM, completely pointless
  8. Lowtrawler's avatar
I can confirm that having changed my tariff on 24 March to the £8 deal in app, the price is now showing as £9.38 and so the increase has been applied. A tariff change is obviously not the same as a new contract.
    HHNNNGGG's avatar
I cancelled my tariff change which hadn't occurred yet, all the new tariffs are showing that price now.

    Worse network ever..

I’m currently with EE and my contract it’s ending in two months so I’ve started to look for an alternative.

I’ve used to be with Three but the network was bad and roaming charges enormous.

Bought an O2 sim just to test the network.

Currently, with EE, on 5G indoors, I’m getting approximately 200Mbps speeds. And that’s indoors.

I’ve switched the sim to O2 and I was getting less than 10Mbps. This is a joke.

I’ve said.. ok, maybe it’s just an indoor problem. Went out for a walk, I was getting approximately 15-20Mbps. Outside. In a 5G area. This is simply a joke.

My advice.. don’t jump and buy a contract straight away. Test the network first with a normal sim. TCB is currently offering £13 cashback if you will purchase an O2 and top with with £10. This is what I’ve done.

Possible in just an area problem, but O2 is the worst network ever in my area when it comes about network coverage/speeds. I never thought I will say this but Three is way better.
    deleted1970577's avatar
The speed and coverage was so poor for me around Glos & Wilts, O2 agreed to terminate my contract early when I complained.

Woeful coverage and worse than 3G speeds badged as 5G.

Definitely should be given a wide berth, but a lot of people on here just see a price and don’t look at value.
  10. RimuruTempest's avatar
If I get this deal will it also double boost my existing Virgin Media broadband speed?
    WhoLeftYouInCharge's avatar
Sort of - depends what VM broadband package you're currently on - you're given a broadband speed boost to the next available level (if you aren't already on the fastest speeds you can get in your area).

    M50 -> Volt M125 (150% speed increase)
    M125 -> Volt M250 (100% speed increase)
    M250 -> Volt M350 (40% speed increase)
    M350 -> Volt M500 (42% speed increase)
    M500 -> Gig1 (100% speed increase)

So in some cases, your upgrade more than doubles your speed, in others it's less than double. You also need to ensure your 02 contract and VM contract are registered at the same address. (edited)

So I took a contract out last year for £8 and am now paying £8.92.

If I renew using this deal, won’t it go back up by the CPI after April? I’m thinking it’s best to find a deal in April?
    DrJogalog's avatar
I believe it will be increased by RPI + 3.9% as all existing contracts. My understanding the new contract has to be taken out after the “cut off period”, last year being 25th March.

    community.o2.co.uk/t5/…266
  12. KingOfSpades's avatar
Best is to upgrade during the last week of March to escape the price hike. I’m gonna do it as I did the same last year (edited)
    dazaman89's avatar
Wouldn't someone still be impacted though as the hike kicks in on April for O2?
  13. roversblues's avatar
This is a good deal but beware of how poor O2 coverage is.
I've recently moved to O2 as part of my new Virgin Media package and I've got to say it might have been a big mistake.
I very rarely get 5G coverage and even their 4G is very slow. It's not only the internet, when I'm indoors I struggle to get more than 1 bar on my phone signal.
If it wasn't part of my package then I'd be leaving O2.
  14. sipart's avatar
Do I pull the trigger on this (need an eSIM - but not untilend of March really) or hang on post 23rd and see if some deals come up that are cheaper than this when factoring in the RPI+3.9%?

Obviously no one has a crystal ball :-D -but someone may have experience on what happens shortly after the increases'normally'? (edited)
    Sim's avatar
There was a 20gb for £8 deal around this time last year. I signed up for that around the 25th and didn't get the price rise, so definately worth hanging on I'd say.
  15. Billyshopperz's avatar
    ⚠️ their prices are increasing
Hello. From April 2023 the monthly price of your calls, texts and data will rise by the 13.4% RPI rate of inflation plus 3.9% as set out in your terms.

For example, if you pay £12 a month, this will increase to £14.07. To see your new bill, log into My O2 in April.

We know this isn't welcome news, but it will help cover the rising cost to power our network. For more information, please visit: v.o2.co.uk/l9s…6L8
    robblack3538's avatar
I'll be waiting for the increase to happen before jumping on this deal, as currently with them now

I'm an existing customer so tried to sign into my account, keeps telling me something went wrong when i login though. Told me to go on live chat for help... 'sorry our team is too busy at the moment'. What a load of rubbish O2 is.

Currently with O2 and got my email about the April price increase. Anyone know how I go about getting them to price match other contract deals.

I’m currently paying £8pm. So can I get them to match this deal or do I have to wait until after the price increase and then find a deal and ask for a match ??

Tempted to get this for my son that is currently with GiffGaff.

I'm guessing there are no problems porting his phone number from GiffGaff to O2 (even though the GiffGaff one is under my wife's name and I was going to pay for this on O2 as Virgin broadband is under my name)?

    Thanks Mark.
    lazyfatboy's avatar
No problem at all. I port away from a sim-only O2 plan yearly to have a month on giffgaff.
  25. tforsale's avatar
Very tempting offer. I'm already on O2 and my original fixed period has expired. How easy it is to change tariff via this USwitch deal? Can I keep my number? Do I need to notify O2? I have Volt enabled too, so not sure if I'll have to set up everything again. Anyone has been through the same process? Thanks in advance.
    mb1's avatar
From what I remember when I did it last year, you just go through the order process. They send you a new SIM and then you swap it over via their Sim Swap page. All pretty painless from what I recall and kept my number. I guess Volt does too, but don't know.

Does anyone know if you can use 20% off student discount and 20% off loyalty discount?

I was unable to use nhs discount with loyalty discount so I think you wouldn’t be able to use student discount either

Great price. I took out the 20gb £8 one in May and as others have written, the EU roaming is good (compared to some others) and if I was on virgin broadband would probably double and roam in other countries (the other half’s worked fine without extra cost in Canada) but while not abroad, the data speed and sometimes any connection is woeful. Unexpected as I’d previously been with Tesco for years and only swapped due to cheaper price. I guess the frequencies are congested until some ‘upgrading’ takes place. (edited)
  28. adamnsu's avatar
Hi. If I take this contract will this be subject to the price increases in April?
    COMARANTZ's avatar
o2.co.uk/prices states, "You'll see the increase on your APRIL 2023 bill onwards" (RPI + 3.9%, so this could cost around £9.11 p.m.). The similar VIRGIN promo (half price for 1st 3 months) states price increase only from 2024. (edited)
  29. Sam223's avatar
Still impacted by April’s price rise if moving to this?
    COMARANTZ's avatar
YES, read my previous message. The package will rise from £8 to approx £9.11 p.m. (regardless of 15GB or 30GB allowance). The VIRGIN promo is a better deal as no price increase. (edited)
  30. headboard99's avatar
Also be aware the RPI is 13.4% plus 3.9 percent in April 2023.....
  31. glover543's avatar
Personally I had a dire O2 reception. Went to Vodafone and they were much better. I’m on SMARTY now which is ok but for me isn’t quite as good as Vodafone. SMARTY is the 3 network

Guys I really have issues where when I'm calling other person says I sound distorted or completely cut off. It happens on both my o2 sims and both different phones. Any ideas why?

I'm not sure what to do as the price is pretty great with volt but signal and network coverage in my area and when I'm out is pretty poor and Internet speeds are bad and sometimes Internet doesn't work at all.

Really tempted to leave o2 when my contract ends as don't think can leave even when increase happens. But my issue is how it will affect my virgin media package. Also hard to know what other great deals out there be it fixed contracts or rolling contracts for mobile sim only.
  36. jai47's avatar
Never used o2 before but I have Virgin Media as my broadband provider.
How would I link this o2 contract to my Virgin account to get double data?
    Potterified's avatar
Use the same name and email address for both accounts. That usually results in automatic activation of Volt and did for us and our neighbours.
  37. HappyShopper's avatar
I've also been hit by O2's underhand price increase shenanigans.

I spoke to O2 and after a long call the agent advised she has spoken to the contracts team who agreed to honour the £8pm tariff I signed up to and they will email me in a few days once they have amended my tariff.

Sounded positive but she also promised to email me after the call with my call reference number and, as yet, no email received.

I hope this gets sorted as dealing with O" customer service is an absolute nightmare particularly with the long call wait times.
    steve.gno's avatar
I would always do on the chat option so you have a written record of what is agreed and you don’t have to wait on hold
  38. AzNDeals's avatar
Anyone else in the same predicament? I hate how unbelievably slow and patchy O2 is, but it's just too cheap and once you factor in the extras of Priority, Volt and EU Roaming, I am struggling to move away. I'm out of contract soon, but still unsure if I should just renew
    mb1's avatar
Yes, same here. Thanks to Airtime Rewards, I haven't paid a single O2 bill for a year now. The data speeds are mostly unusable, but the perks, EU roaming and eSIM support make me stick with them.

As a few others have said, O2 have always been abysmal for me, more often that not there's barely a signal. If the signal does look to be OK, the data speeds have always been shocking.
