Got this a while ago and was excellent for price paid. Coped with heavy clay

Only downside is there's a narrower gap between inner blades and central pole and this tended to clog very easily with ivy/rootsetc which wrapped round - so constantly had to clear with a Stanley knife or secateurs.suspect that's an issue with all these types of tillers

Correct, I have a different brand but pretty much the same result. I'm not sure theres anything you can do about it, still cutting tangles is a lot easier than manually doing the job for a whole day.

I need to level my garden after digging trenches and a soak away. Would this be powerfully enough to help level the soil which is now very uneven?
    aayyup's avatar
    Definitely

Excellent price. I used to own this (sold it as only required it for a single job). It is really good. Made short work of a lawn that was over run with weeds. (edited)

I'm not sure that's the optimal process. Usually you'd deep scarify to remove the weeds.

Then can use this to condition the soil (e.g. reducing compaction and adding nutrients with compost etc).

But I'm glad it worked for you

I have a similar machine (though 800w rather than 1200w) purchased from Screwfix. If you are overturning areas of soil or grass they are brilliant and save you loads of backbreaking work. As someone has mentioned, they can take you by surprise with their 'kick' if you are not careful, but I find by walking slowly backwards with it rather than forwards, it makes the job much easier and is much more effective. The Screwfix one is currently £70, so I would say this is definitely worth a punt if you have a big digging task to tackle.

Great price. I paid £59.99 last week as I needed it for a couple areas in my garden. I tried the outdoor40 code & it didn’t work, they must have just put it on that offer.

Great tool, the only problem I’ve found is it’s single speed. Ie FAST only. The trigger doesn’t let it gradually build up speed so the first time you use it make sure you’re stood well behind it & have a good grip of it. It’s easy once you get going but that first bit, it was bouncing over compacted ground & my Mrs thought I was about to lose a leg!

A question for an owner: can you reduce from 4 to 2 blades when working on difficult ground?
    Thanks in anticipation! (edited)

For the benefit of an absolutely inept gardener, my lawn is incredibly unlevel and contains large cracks (newbuild in 2016).

To correct this, am I right in thinking I'd have to remove the eixsting grass before using this tool and laying new seed?
    Amadan's avatar
If it's just grass just go at it with the tiller. I had totally overgrown area (brambles / ivy etc) and it coped easily. Re-seeded and looks fine now. I expected loads of weeds to appear but did not happen

Main benefit of this v hiring is you can do the job at your own pace for less cost.

Bargain! These are great machines, surprisingly powerful and need to be controlled very carefully. I dug up and reseeded 2 lawns last year and they look great now.
Saves back-breaking work, it can do in an hour what otherwise would take all day. The fine tilth is also better than you could possibly produce by hand.

Ordered. Can someone please recommend what grade/type of oil this needs?
    aayyup's avatar
I just put car motor oil that I had in the garage in mine. It worked perfectly well with that.

Tillers are not good for nature's aeration and fertilisation, the worm.
    BraddersJ's avatar
I think most people should only need to use them on their land once and after that they've learned they need to avoid *that thing* that made the ground need attention (taking lawn compaction as an example) (edited)

Weekend shed head on YouTube does a review of an electric ferret tiller, not sure if it is the same model though.

Mine arrived yesterday - assembled, now just need to put some oil in the gearbox. Thanks OP.
    Frizzle's avatar
On mine when I took the plug out and it was filled with grease. I filled it with gear oil (75W90) but it didn't take much as it was already almost totally filled with grease. It is a worm drive gearbox and a modern Engine oil would be too thin.

I paid good money to have a moss covered lawn dug up, and replaced with new turf lawn a number of years ago.Slowly but surely it has ended up covered in moss again..I think it’s the mixture of all the rain we get up here, and the fact there’s a lot of trees in the garden.
Would this be any use for “fixing” the problem..would it take up all the mossy grass lawn, and leave to reseed the whole thing.Or do I require something a bit more than this ?
    googleboogle's avatar
Think you need a scarafier for that.

Very good machine used last year to clear weeded and bramble area. Made it light work. (edited)
  23. GeordieTariq's avatar
Excellent product. Did all the garden in 40 minutes which would have taken me days as well as the constant nagging. I am sure I paid £50 last year, so this a good price.
  24. jaizan's avatar
    Thanks for the recommendations.
    I have ordered one.
  25. Xiwt's avatar
Thanks OP hope this thing can cope with areas of compacted soil and weeds.
    ThermalRider's avatar
It will work best if the ground isn't too dry, the day after heavy rain would be perfect.

I brought a big petrol Honda motor one when levelling my lawn and sold it for the same money I paid for it…. But, for £35 this’ll make easy work of our flower beds, so worth the £35…. Thanks OP

Brilliant, I need to do similar work. Will buy it now.

Will this go down far enough to destroy an ant nest that we have seen evidence of on our lawn? Just wondering if this will be a side benefit of tilling a small garden that we haven't really maintained very well.

qu for owners, do you have to put gearbox oil in before you first start using it? (edited)
  32. MBCH's avatar
I’ve got to ask… will this stand any chance against the (final) solid mass of bamboo roots that the lovely previous owners decided to plant?!??
  33. Merlin3000's avatar
Fantastic - been looking for one of these. Bought.
  34. googleboogle's avatar
Cheers. Will hopefully encourage me to level my garden now.

    Thanks OP - ordered !
I bought a 1200W tiller a few years ago (£99) , been very good , still working fine.
It came with oil in , I've put more in a couple years back.
Really need to loosen heavy soil first with a fork , it's easier to pull backwards - and it clogs up with roots a lot , keeps working but I keep an old knife handy when using it. Takes time to get deep but still far quicker than by hand.
The results are good - you will sink in a few inches if walk on tilled area !
I know these are NOT good for worms , but they make it possible for most people to make a start , whereas digging by hand just isn't going to happen - it still takes quite an effort to use but you will have results to see for your efforts.
I don't get that many weeds appearing afterwards but really best to never leave just bare soil.
