Before anybody signs up to this its a good idea to read some of these reviews first.

    Wow I’m having second thoughts

Is there an Esso reward card for those that don't meet the blue light/defence criteria?
    phoenix029's avatar
Fuelpecker is the same but for anyone. I get the same discount with it as this.

I’ve tried numerous times to complete the application for a card, contacted them, to no joy I hasten to add, and now can’t even delete what data they hold. Wouldn’t have touched this with a barge pole if I’d have known what a nightmare it was!

Odd - though you do need to note this part of the application process:

“Only Blue Light Card and Defence Discount Service members can register for the Esso Card™. Please ensure you sign up with the same name that you are registered with at Blue Light Card, or your application will not be accepted“

Had my card quite a while now. Not had any issues and have always been able to find an Esso garage that works out cheaper than anything else nearby once you factor in the discount. You get an email receipt a couple of days after you pay for your fuel and it then debits your credit card the same day. It's free so why not apply for one and if Esso works out cheaper buy your fuel there, if it doesn't go to another garage? I can't see why people are getting so bent out of shape over this. You don't have to use it if you've got it?

Do you always have to go inside on purchase, can't just do at the pump?
    fraz41's avatar
yes, you have to go inside, provide regn number, mileage and enter pin.

I’m struggling to register. I’ve authorised my bank card but I’m stuck on a page saying “ your payment card provider has requested some additional security details”… how do I go past this stage as it doesn’t seem to be doing anything…
    Nikita_Percival's avatar
Do you need to approve in your bank app?
  7. AlexCarter's avatar
Every time this comes back up again it doesn't work for me. It gets to the 1p bank transaction part, gets authorised, then the website just sits in an infinite loop and never gets anywhere. What a waste of 1p....
    stuartbe31's avatar
    Me too.

You can use the Esso app to fuel up without going to the kiosk. You pay via PayPal or credit/debit card. You can also link your nectar card to the esso app so you get the nectar points and bonus offers. Not sure if you can also link this esso fuel card to their app though as i don't have one.

Morrisons tend to get most of my fuel purchases as you get 4% back via Airtime Rewards gift card purchases. (edited)
    harry27's avatar
This fuel card wont work via app or pay at pump unfortunately.
  9. Itssocheap's avatar
But at least 10p a litre dearer than supermarket pumps.
    herbiecc's avatar
No it doesn't it explicitly states in the book fuel from the pumps, it does recommend higher purity fuels such as BP. By the way I've not committed to using either supermarket or non-supermarket fuel.
  10. Bungle278's avatar
You need to do it off a laptop as their mobile site always crashes during setup
    Tanky's avatar
    I noticed this too

Avoid! This company should be banned here! Read trust pilot for details.
    Aiadi's avatar
Not sure if these reviews apply to this product though as a lot of them talk about a direct debit or a tracker....!!!

doesnt seem to work for defence discount member numbers

Been using my BLC Esso card for months … With discount it works out the cheapest in my town.

As for the naysayers - I’ve not had any problems with this card at all.

    It works as advertised.

One thing annoys me though. My Employer offers the very same Esso Wex card to its customers, with slightly better discounts, and the card can be used at other stations Inc Shell, BP, Tesco, Sainsburys amongst others.

Wonder why the BLC variant is restricted only to Esso ?
  14. TheShadowWalker's avatar
My esso card still hasnt arrived. How long does it take?
    Smck75's avatar
Can take 14 to 21 days
  15. madasahatter's avatar
Sounds great - until you realise that the Esso stations in your area are routinely 4 or 5p per litre more expensive than the cheapest outlets anyway so even with this “discount” you’re still paying more than you need. Unless I live in the only area where this is so, of course………
    james_marchant's avatar
I used to have one of these cards. Years ago. But yes. That was my exact finding too. I’d buy fuel cheaper from elsewhere anyway
  16. lmulli's avatar
I've got one and used it last week, straight forward enough, however, I only used it because I'd let my tank get mega low on fuel and ESSO were the closest petrol station, otherwise I would have gone elsewhere as ESSO are quite expensive. The pump price was 151.9, I ended up paying 148.9, the other stations I passed thereafter were anywhere from 140.9-144.9, so really, I didn't save anything, but needs must as I literally had about 20 miles left in the tank.
    CrazyPogo's avatar
Same for me.... Esso is actually 20p a litre more than Tesco for me. So even 6p off..... 14p more a litre than Tesco lol it's insane they're still open.
  17. Trevisparky's avatar
Can never get this to load at the end.
    scottwizz1981's avatar
    Same here
  18. Cameron92's avatar
Millions of equally hardworking people not eligible for discounted fuel. Seems unfair. Get a lot of perks working for those departments
    jamesginger393's avatar
Believe me it’s not cheaper even with the discount. Esso is a good 6p a litre dearer where I live so even with 4p off per litre for diesel it’s still more expensive than the Shell garage I use.
  19. Nikita_Percival's avatar
I’ve got one. Really handy and easy to set up
    Dark_Devil's avatar
Did you given card details to validate payment card?
  20. AaDI's avatar
    Took two minutes to apply.
  21. gooner786's avatar
Annoying thing is prices are cheaper at all other supermarket pumps even after the rushing these lot give.
  22. paula1990's avatar
When tried to signup it asks for the following-

"Blue Light Card and Defence Discount Service membership numbers"
    Whitey2048's avatar
Your blue light card had a number on it starting with BLC. That is what they need.
  23. mrjustinhoward's avatar
If you work for a public service, there is an agreement that you can get a fuel card from UK FUELS and save loads, especially on diesel.
Speak to your federation and they will be able to sort it.
    mrjh's avatar
Any more info on public service definition?
  24. ciaravella's avatar
Do I take it this does not work with defence discount cards? I presume you have to get BLC which you can via Defence discounts
    Nikita_Percival's avatar

  30. Swahmad's avatar
I got my card through the post ages ago and somehow lost it 🤦 any way of getting a new one sent?
    deleted2871360's avatar
Contact them. They are the only folks that can supply you with one. No one else can help.
  31. P-A1XAKS's avatar
Thanks op I've added heat, however, typical greedy oil and gas companies...

They want everything in order to use this.

Card details, and then it states after registration "The cashier will swipe your card and you may be asked you for your mileage and registration number"

I wish it was just a simple QR code I could add to Google wallet instead of having to
Wait to have a physical card sent first, adding more plastic into our environment

I singed up for this last year , not used it once as their prices mean that even with the savings your still paying more 😬
    Whitey2048's avatar
Esso are right up there with the cheapest in my area, and extra 4 pence off per litre mean it's good for me. Obviously depends where you live though for that to be the case.

Card number is restricted to only BLC in the drop down, despite it saying above DDS or BLC. Entered my DDS number and it doesn’t work.

Great if you’ve a BLC (assuming it works) and false advertising for DDS (glad I used an obfuscated email).
  37. 5hooey's avatar
Just applied successfully, will take 12 to 15 business days for the card to arrive it says.

Took a couple of minutes as others said.

Only needed my BLC number. (edited)
  38. tommo579's avatar
Still need to shop around for fuel though 6 pence a litre off is not worth it if fuel is cheaper elsewhere or closer to you!
  39. pworeilly's avatar
For what it's worth, I spoke with one of the chat agents online and she said that the Defence Discount Service application is not live yet but should be in a few days. She suggested trying to apply using DDS info again on Friday. Currently only BLC details can be entered.
  40. SimonQuinney's avatar
DDs card doesn’t sign up till Friday they have said.
