I’d rather communicate with messages sent through pidgins than using Lycamobile.
They keep having these offers because people are leaving their network, not because they’re good. (edited)

It’s worth noting that as of yesterday they ditched o2 and now use EE signal. They’ve went from the UK’s worst network to piggybacking on the best.

If your experience was due to signal or data troubles things may now have changed.

It is an amazing deal if Lyca uses EE. I couldn't find any information about Lyca using EE. Their website still mentions O2.

Do you have any other Information?

The switchover literally just happened yesterday and there’s a few existing customers that are still on the o2 side for the next few days as far as I know.

There’s been a lot of discussion about it in places like the ISPReview forums confirming what’s happened but complete silent from Lyca apart from sending out texts to users saying they’re improving their network experience and want you to restart your phone. When you do so you’re suddenly on EE instead.

I can only assume Lyca haven’t gotten around to updating the site yet, or are waiting until the remaining customers (eSIM Users) have been pushed over in the coming days too.

Does anyone know if the New Lycamobile on EE supports WiFi calling? (anyone recently on the o2 version been moved over and see it works now?) thank you
    ianmcuk's avatar
I'm on Lyca on EE - no WiFi calling available.

Do you have to be in an area where there is a 5G mast?
I live very rural, no gas supply or fibre broadband here!
Currently on PAG Giffgaff which uses O2 network and most of the time I cannot get a signal for a mobile phone call let alone data.
My daughter is with EE and has no issues with calls or a data signal when she is home from uni. If I go with Lyca using this deal, will I get the same as my daughter?
My phone is a Xiaomi Poco x3 pro and hers a Samsung galaxy S22...I don't know if this makes any difference?...
I don't want to risk getting tied in to a contract and end up in a worse situation than with Giffgaff.
Thanks in advance for any help! 🐾

Sign up with EE Directly, CMLink, 1p Mobile, or Popit. These are the only options for FULL EE Signal.

Lycamobile (along with all the other EE Piggybackers except the ones I mentioned above) have a watered down version of EE Signal. They restrict access to 800MHz/Band 20 4G Signal. This is a big problem in rural locations.

You can compare the difference in 4G Signal here.
This is what Lyca will give you right now:
    coverage.ee.co.uk/cov…ayg

This is what EE or the other brands above will give you:
    coverage.ee.co.uk/cov…/ee

Can't be used for tethering or in a 5G router:
Lycamobile reserves the right to withdraw or suspend the offer or to disconnect you if we suspect that offer is being used for commercial purposes, for conferencing, or if it is not being used in a handset (in a SIM box for example), if it is being used for tethering or if any reason Lycamobile reasonably suspects that you are not acting in accordance with this policy where we consider that the usage was illegitimate.

Didn't Three get in hot water with Ofcom years ago for a similar tethering policy...

How do you keep the same number?
    KodaBear's avatar
    Author
Text PAC to 65075 From the SIM Card you want to keep your number of. As long as you are coming from any network other than Lycamobile, you simply have to provide them this code using the form linked below when the SIM has arrived and you've activated it. If you submit it before 5PM on a working day, the number should transfer at some point the following working day.

    lycamobile.co.uk/en/…-2/

If you are already with Lyca, you'd have to get a pay as you go SIM from another network, port out, then back in again.

For anyone wondering. 5G speeds on Lyca (EE) are as fast as my normal EE Sim, plus access to Band 20 (800Mhz) 4G. Which looks like it’s full EE access.
    anuraagpaul's avatar
That packet loss is crazy! Nothing to brag about.

So I just got the mega cheap 10gb Lyca deal for £1.49. I had strong signal yesterday pre Lyca switch from o2 to ee, today however phone shows ee lte & it’s woeful. (not a major issue as it’s only a backup device, not sure I’d bite on a higher data allowance with them. Smarty often offer 50gb for £8 and I found a had 5g in most places. (edited)

Unfortunately you are in the minority with this. EE Has been the UK's best network for the last 9.5 Years now. Most people are welcoming the change as it's getting them away from the horribly congested o2 network but as you have seen for yourself, sadly there are a few edge cases wherte the opposite happens.

If you want to stick with o2, then look on the comparison websites. o2 Themselves often have some cheap deals that come and go. Otherwise Giffgaff, Tesco Mobile, Virgin and Sky would be the remaining piggybackers that you could go to.
  9. mb1's avatar
What is your source that they are now on EE?
  10. afn's avatar
Any official links on the change from O2 to EE would be helpful. I have dire O2 here so welcoming the change to EE if it’s true. Sometimes the speed is so bad it won’t even register on the speedtest app!
  11. manoj_manoj's avatar
Can we get this as an esim?
    KodaBear's avatar
    Author
Nope. You've got to order the physical SIM. Once you receive the physical SIM you can put it in a phone, activate it, and request a SIM Swap to eSIM.

However, right now the Lyca eSIMs are still on the o2 Network. So even if you order this SIM now you may want to hold off until some time next week when the eSIM Service is also on the EE Side of things too.
  12. Blasphemous's avatar
I appreciate this is a 5G SIM but does it support 4G as well? Could the SIM be used in a TP-Link Archer MR600 4G router?

Here's the reason I ask... Sky broadband at home is woeful and I'm on the highest line they can support at this time. I'm also on EE for my mobile and the 4G speed is WAY beyond what Sky are delivering... Here's two screenshots from my phone testing over the SIM and over WiFi... As you'll see, there's a world of difference between the two even in terms of latency.

I want to port my number to these from O2, as well as order an eSim instead of a physical sim card, how do i go about this after ordering from them?
Ordered thanx OP, couldn't find out how to select an eSim though??
I will have to contact them to have it changed hopefully. (edited)

Wait until it arrives. Pop the physical SIM in and activate it. Once all set up. You’ll be able to do a SIM Swap on your online account to move over to eSIM.

My eSIM has just switched over to EE now too. Here’s a speed comparison of 3G/4G/5G between the Lyca o2 speeds and the Lyca EE speeds.

Yesterday is o2. Today is EE.

4G Download speeds have went from 15Mb to 83Mb.

Where exactly were these tests done. All in same location? All indoors or outdoors? Personally I spend most time inside a building. I've noticed a modest download speed increase indoors, and a drastic DECREASE in upload speeds indoors. Outdoors, both have increased significantly. I've also noticed coverage is not as good in the Midlands area, particularly in the suburbs. I'm on a Note 9 so no 5G. Overall, in my usage I'm impacted negatively so may move to Lebara in time as Vodafone is more balanced in my area. (edited)

Just got a lyca sim and put it in my phone today and when I've looked at it and used it , its been 5g and faster than my O2 that never shows 5g. I live in a rural area and it's showing 5g at my home. Well impressed

I went for o2 last week for £10. Network is not good like EE. It was £25 a month for 200 GB on ee before the switch.

I need switch over myself as well I am paying £26 for 160 GB a month EE right now.
Lycamobile is good overall guys? I am trying to save as much as I can due to mortgage payment has gone up for me

Lycamobile in my opinion is decent overall. The move to EE signal is only a good thing in my eyes and will hopefully do wonders for their reputation.

Customer service is the one sticking point that seems to be hit and miss. I have personally never had a problem nor have my friends and family who I brought over to them. But there are a few horror stories about them. My advice if you do need to contact them - Send them a DM on Twitter - This has worked well for me when I needed to talk to someone.
  24. tattybonce's avatar
Don't do it - honestly. Despite having another 5 months at 99p we both left. Data signal was rubbish and phone calls had a really bad echo and delay. Went back to Lebera and now both happy again.

They switched away from o2 to EE Just yesterday. Signal issues like that should now be a thing of the past.

Go to the Lyca website, order a free sim, and choose the esim option. A barcode will appear once all the details have been entered. Log in to your Lyca account using a different browser, incognito mode, or private mode, then swap your sim within a minute online.

Went through TopCashback for £10 cashback and the same deal but £7 a month for 6 months instead rolling contract.

Figured I’ll give it a shot to see if EE piggyback is decent in my area for a cheaper and shorter amount before moving
    KodaBear's avatar
    Author
Just a heads up that this deal is a rolling contract too. You can cancel it at any time. You just get the discounted price for 12 months rather than 6.

Still, if you’ve got £7 a month for 100GB, even if only for 6 months that’s a really good deal.

Does anyone know how does US Roaming work on Lyca?
    dealhunter1571's avatar
I just got a three £10 10gb sim and it's working in the US. You can get 12gb if you enable autorenew and you can disable it straight away.
  34. alchemistkevin's avatar
Does this deal/charges begin from the moment you sign up or after you 'activate' the SIM?
    KodaBear's avatar
    Author
You pay for your first month at the point of order. But the deal doesn’t start until you activate the SIM by putting it in a device. You can do this any time up until 30 days from the date of ordering.

Your next months payment would then be taken one month after activation.

EU roaming 9.5GB cap. I'd rather go for Virgin 35GB for £10/month, you can use your whole allowance for EU roaming. 1 month contract. (edited)
    ogeran's avatar
I'm personally on Virgin which is piggybacking O2. I would think long and hard before jumping onto Virgin. I've moved from Vodafone Virgin to O2 Virgin and suffice to say it's that bad I am now moving, to this deal as it happens. My virgin deal was 50gb for £8 and basically useless. In central Liverpool ping @60. Download @3-5 mbs. Upload anywhere between 0.01 mbs up to maybe 1mb. ( The 0.01 isn't a typo) . 3g effectively doesn't work at all. And if you go indoors where I currently am on Virgin I had to reboot my phone to get an amazing ping 68 2mbs download and I didn't even wait for the upload speed, it was that bad. Apart from that it's brilliant (edited)

These 100 international minutes are a gimmick. Have they ever heard of free calls over messeger or whatsapp?
    KodaBear's avatar
    Author
    Not everyone has such apps.
I Personally use quite a lot of international minutes. Sometimes to family who aren't online, Other times to businesses which again can't be reached via such messenger services.

I'd hardly call it a gimmick. Lycamobile's original big selling point was about connecting people to others around the world. Even today, they sell their products mostly to those in multi-ethnic communities to keep in touch with loved ones overseas. But at this price point, 100GB for £10 - It's not like they're charging extra for something you personally would never use. Even without the international minutes they're still undercutting pretty much every other UK network's offers at the moment.
