Just moving this here for the TLDR crowd.
"At PCMag, our expertise lies in evaluating products, not international relations. Based on their merits, we still give high marks to Kaspersky’s security products. However, with the increasing censure and criticism of Kaspersky by US government agencies, foreign agencies, and informed third parties, we can no longer recommend that you buy Kaspersky’s products. Please, make another selection—we’ve evaluated dozens and dozens of products in the security realm." (edited)
We've had enquiries from people worried about their home IT. It almost certainly remains the case that nearly all individuals in the UK (and many enterprises) are not going to be targeted by Russian cyber attack, regardless of whether they use Russian products and services.
If your personal laptop uses Kaspersky AV (or other products):
- it's highly unlikely to be directly targeted
- it’s safe to turn on and use at the moment
However, you may need to move to a new AV product if Kaspersky itself becomes subject to sanctions, since the AV product would likely stop getting updates (and AV software is only effective if it's updated regularly). (edited)
It highly unlikely Microsoft Defender would be as thorough.
I go on some pretty dodgy websites and never get inflected.
This
"Why is it so cheap compared to others?"
Exactly as mentioned elsewhere. Sales are down due to said association.
I really liked the product but have now moved to another. Antivirus hooks into the deepest parts of your system, so vendor trust is very important.
Although my issue is more to do with what the vendor may be forced to do by law.
TOTAL version for 10 devices is just 12.99 so that would cover both our laptops/tabs/phones, plus media player, with 3 spare.
Good price for a good product.
It’s not the best but good.
Would grab one but got 13 months left! (edited)
You might as well use the free version if you want one. Does the same job.
They also have only the bare minimum features. Though that may be all you need and/or want.
Searching suggests Kaspersky Plus does give unlimited (but only the 1 main account).
