Some time back, my comment got a number of likes after going through each app, as I travel 30k a year and have used them most of them. Just thought I would update that slightly without going into too many details

The summary of each app is as follows:

TomTom Go - All maps are stored offline, which means you don't need reception to find a route. Best Looking interface, decent route planning and avoiding traffic, but rubbish at taking you to front doors (i.e. I often got to my destination and ended up having to spend 5 minutes looking for the address). Most prone to sending down non-existent roads that make headlines.
Amigo - TomTom answer to Waze; is free and could be excellent, but has the same issues as above and the small user base means few reporting. Missing some of the features you see in TomTom Go. Long term, I can see Amigo becoming my go to navigation, but still too new with too few users to be useful IMO
Google Maps - Best route planning, but no reporting and seems to indicate traffic too late for it to route you around (i.e. end up in traffic, then it turns Red where others woud have routed you around).
Waze - Best for reporting; a massive user base means 99% of things to be reported have been, and it's good to have those warnings on journeys. Gets you around traffic incidents and jams earlier than all others in my experience. Not a fan of the interface, and has a tendency to route you through the shortest route when the fastest is best, and in the countryside especially, you'll spend time on small roads when main roads would have been a better choice. Sometimes borders on the ridiculous sending; local to me there is a route where it will take you down a 5-mile single-track road as opposed to an 8-mile duel carriageway.

My biggest complaint with all these apps is the inability to dictate routes by vehicle class and the inability to force the avoidance of certain roads when I encounter routes specifically unsuitable for my van. An example; as a van driver, anytime I work or travel through London, I have to plan my route to avoid the Rotherhithe Tunnel, as I'm not allowed in it.

What I said in my previous comment was I would like The Interface TomTom, Reporting of Waze and Route Planning of Google Maps. Which one is best for you depends on what feature you are willing to lose, but I almost always return to Waze.

That being said, I tried recently to have a different approach with Tomtom Go through Android Auto for navigation and Waze on my Phone for additional alerts and reporting, and have really liked this setup as the best of both worlds. I have also discovered What3Words for addresses, which I can send directly to the TomTom Go app, and it takes me right to the front door which is excellent; I spend 5min the night before to find the correct "What3Words" and has been faultless

    Hope that helps some

    ----

    Footnote -

Somebody suggested "CamSam" for cameras which work in the background alerting of speed traps. It works well, but I found Waze just as comprehensive, and CamSam missed all the mobile cameras I came across. Not used it at all since trying it.

Amigo overlay in conjunction with Waze or Google for directions works a treat for me (not possible on ios, though)

Used a disposable Revolut and all went through fine. Thanks

Used Paypal, then signed into my Tom Tom account, went to subs and cancelled it

Asking for payment method so will have to remember to cancel renewal

I always use a disposable virtual card if it works. Then use that card for my next real purchase of something so the details become invalid.

If it was for trucks too, that would be magical
    dazzler66's avatar
If you've got an Android phone try Roadlords, all our Class 1 Drivers use it, it's got Live Traffic and Camera's and it's free on Google Play Store.

AmiGo is free and from TonTom
    Admast79's avatar
Cool. But TomTom can be used offline which can be very helpful on some occasions.

Does anyone still use TomTom? Is the app really better than Google?
    Umbrella_Man's avatar
Tomtom is good for finding specific street addresses. Google has a better search engine results if you want to find and get to shops, pubs, businesses, etc. I use both Tomtom and Google together when driving a truck and both have great traffic jam warning. I have rarely been caught out with either when it comes to showing bad traffic ahead. For phone users there's not really much point using tomtom over Google. Imo

    Is this better then Waze?
    Nasweb's avatar
    Waze is much better

Installed but unfortunately keeps crashing as soon as I hit the search option. Tired reinstalling too. I cannot search for anything without the app force closing. Android Galaxy S23 Ultra Oneui 6.0. What a shame 😞
    cactusjack's avatar
I've just found this fix and it works!

    help.tomtom.com/hc/en-gb/articles/14799597177490

We see reports that TomTom GO Navigation is crashing on Samsung Galaxy S23 devices since upgrading to Android 14 (One UI 6.0).

So far our findings are that the crashes using search are related to switched default system fonts. We recommend switching back to default fonts until we have found a permanent solution.

Hopefully it helps someone else! (edited)

Long time TomTom user here. One thing to be aware of with the app is that the maps are supposedly updated weekly, but you won't get any prompts - you need to do it manually. Even if the maps say they're up to date, sometimes they're not. They push speed camera updates at least every week, and every 3 months they'll push a whole new map to you. Well worth mashing the map update button every so often.
  10. Lucifer_UK's avatar
Downloaded the app cannot see a login page?
    Rimi's avatar
Are you on iPhone? If so, "restore purchases" and log in with Apple ID and you will see "no subscription found" and writing about some legacy TomTom app or something...just do log in in bottom right corner and log in with details you have used to buy it. All done. (edited)

Here my review on my 15 mile commute to work

    The Good
Interface and Map looks really nice compared to Waze.

    The Bad
It tried to take me on 2 different routes when clearly the route I was using was far more direct and with better roads.

No clear notifications for speed cameras like I get with Waze.

It didn't tell me about the roadworks signals that popped up in my village.

It didn't warn me about the broken down car either, Waze would usually do this.

It didn't warn me of the presence of Police where Waze would.

So my final thought are I wouldn't pay £20 a year for this when my Alternatives are far far better for free and I won't be using it again. (edited)

Our local knowledge will often be better than sat nav. It depends on what settings on routing also. Fastest route, eco route etc.

TomTom for me is superior to anything out there.

Only offers me 7 days - I tried the 12 months option expecting a different screen but it just kept saying start 7 day trial .... so I clicked that and it said £19:99 will be taken on 22nd November - they better NOT!

    I've uninstalled!

when we can use google map free than whts reason to use tom tom?
    rtd's avatar
TomTom is a lot clearer in it's mapping especially when looking at it at a glance. I use TomTom for work and Google for personal local trips, but if going long distance over 10 MLS then it's TomTom all the way for me.
  14. akscooby's avatar
Always love TT threads where everyone feels they have to justify their reluctance to pay for something over free alternatives
Sure its not for everyone and experience will vary from one route to the next... but offline maps, being able to create, load and save specific route plans, set POI and favourites, option to do all this on a PC and sync it up...

Not least a clear view of where the traffic delays are on the side bar during your overall route whilst you drive and not just when you get to them or in the initialy summary screen (looking at you Waze) are just a few benefits that make it worth while for some (aka Me :P)

Shame I cant add this to existing subscription which I bought for about 18 months the last time HUKD posted a deal (edited)
    MOJOoo7's avatar
TomTom is brilliant, been using it with the last free German offer. Imo it's superior to the free maps Waze/Google and others.

What happens after 12 months will it renew or cancelled itself or do we need to cancel so automatically payment doesn’t go?
    Dustlandfairytale's avatar
Go on the web page and cancel now. So you don't forget later on. I have cancelled tonight with no problems.
  16. janlim's avatar
    Subscription start date 15-11-2023
    Next cgarge sate 15-11-2024
There is an option tp cancel it, if i cancel it will the subcription still last till 15-11-2024. Worry that i might forgot to cancel by the time it charge me.
    BuzzDuraband's avatar
I cancelled a subscription I took in July in a similar way about an hour ago, my app is still showing an expiration of 27th July 2024. Wether this changes or not is beyond me, but as of now, I'm led to believe my subscription is still active.

Try signing into your account on line first, then purchasing and then go to the app and restore purchases
  19. RadiantFire's avatar
BEWARE! They need you to put a credit card down (...hoping you'd forget to cancel just before your 12 free months are up)
    SnoopZ's avatar
Just like every other subscription, just cancel 5mins after signing up or do what I do and use the Microsoft ' To Do' reminder app on phone.
  20. patin's avatar
What are the log in details? "Log in using the email address we sent this email to" - who is 'we'? and what email? What about the password? Confused
    mutley1's avatar
when you sign up for the free 12 months, it would have asked you for an email address and a password to create an account. then when you download the app on to your phone, it will ask you to log in and you can then choose the "restore purchase" option.
  21. manufan's avatar
I've tried all the major satnav apps, for predicting traffic nothing comes close to how good TomTom is.
    ash.riaz's avatar
Thank you. Cant argue with free either.
  22. cleverduck's avatar
Auto renew it seems ... Instantly not interested.

Voted hot anyway for those who usually buy anyway.
    Nicolidus's avatar
I just cancelled the renewal straight away and it’s still valid for a year. A daft warning flags up about getting caught speeding if you cancel…
  23. G_W10's avatar
Thanks, used the code. Don't think I would use it though but gonna try it, I can't see why Google maps can be beaten for updates and best routes when it's free, I did try waze but hated those ads on my screen
    Rimi's avatar
Google is good, but it is not showing accurate traffic nor speed cams, which TomTom do and do very accurately. Saved me many hours of traffic jams when was in France, Germany and Baltic states this summer.
  24. cactusjack's avatar
    51448128_1.jpg
Wow. That's some serious scare mongering if you cancel

Warning about getting caught speeding if you cancel. I'm sure if you don't speed, you'll be just fine.

Cancelling immediately after purchase still shows that I have an active service until 15/11/2024 so it shouldn't end the subscription early. (edited)

Theres an old article of tomtom selling data to cops over speeding
  25. Dealer-Wheeler's avatar
Not sure if it helps anyone but I've just googled and it said that TomTom GO is supported by Android Auto - may well give it a go. Thanks OP.
    boonergooner's avatar
I installed this on the android head unit in my car, good to go!
  26. junkboxp's avatar
is this up to date with speed cameras both fixed and mobile?
    A57ton's avatar
    Yes it is.
  27. goldfishtrad's avatar
I am currently using this for free with the Tomtom Germany free offer that was on here several months ago. I like it a lot and the offline mode works really well when you are holidaying in a country where data cost is an issue. But I will go back to Google Maps when the free period expires as frankly I don't think its worth paying for this when Google Maps is free and is broadly comparable - including the offline mode.
  28. AbuG's avatar
Used this today for the first time... took me to two dead ends in Kings Heath...
    chris3912's avatar
Utter garbage then I'll stick with Waze
  29. bear18's avatar
What a terrible website. It's impossible to checkout. Seriously stressed me out.
  30. mrkierman's avatar
I've purchased for FREE and then cancelled, the app still shows an active 12 month subscription.
    David18's avatar
Yeah, that’s what I’ve always done with free trials and it’s never not worked for me.
  31. willhay555's avatar
Presumably you can use this on multiple devices?
    clayts's avatar
Yes, you can - installed on two phones and a tablet and all work
  32. mutley1's avatar
thanks OP, decided to give it a try, can't do any harm! i have put a calendar alert to cancel next September, but may do so straightaway if I still keep the 12 months subscription.
    Ktam's avatar
Don't think you can keep the subscription, certainly it didn't for me
  33. AwaisMalik's avatar
    Downloaded and used this today.

    It’s Free.
It does give you better routes that are quicker when in traffic.
This is not as responsive as google maps when taking turns.
Great for warning you for cameras.
Found it difficult to pinpoint the exact places I wanted to go, not as precise as google maps.
  34. Skizo's avatar
Why bother? Google uses peoples smart phone data to calculate; who is on the road where are they going, what speed they are traveling etc, and then gives an accurate estimate / best route.

Also you know as soon as the 12 months end you'll be slapped with a monthly fee of £20
    clayts's avatar
Annual fee of £20 not monthly
  35. s8aft's avatar
Why do we need this when you have offline maps and navigation with Google Maps which is widely used?
    notalwaysright19's avatar
What I don't like about Google maps is the display is very fine delicate, and small. I prefer the chunky display of TomTom and with the very specific lane guidance.

Also, google maps doesn't make a sound when a camera is coming up (for me). It just has a very small camera icon where the camera is with no warning.
  36. smegal's avatar
I'm sounding really dense. I'm an existing subscriber. How do I use this code (Android)?
    Rimi's avatar
You can't on same account. Just use different email and you are good.
  37. mannikz's avatar
I have just purchased this. I have bought the app with different email but When I installed the app it had automatically installed with my Apple ID. Is there anyway I can change the email address on the app to put the one I’ve purchased through. Thanks.
    bemoregeeky's avatar
Had the same, login with your appleID. It will find no subscriptions and give you the option to login with your tomtom account.
  38. LiviuRoşca's avatar
Sadly not possible to activate for truck, only for cars.
  39. upset.brown.pant's avatar
Tested this for my commute and it makes two major errors trying to direct me down routes that I know are are not passable by car. And marking as avoid on the route does nothing. Can't believe their data doesn't show these as not suitable.

So far not a great experience, no chance I'll use abroad of these are the kind of basic errors it makes.
