HP laptop with a 6-core 12th gen i3 processor for sub £200, free click and collect from your local Post Office.

RAM can be upgraded (although this would void the warranty).

Battery life isn't great according to some reviews so more suitable for a mainly home based machine.

Intel Core i3-1215U (2P+4E) in this system scores about the same as a Core i7-1165G7 from previous generation, excellent performance boost over older systems.
RAM can be upgraded by removing screws and other screws under the rubber feet, HP told OP that it will void warranty but legally they can't do this, nor can they tell if you put it back if you happened to need a claim. £10 for an 8GB stick from CEX which will give you with 12GB total.
Battery life is rated up to 7.5 hours so expect 4-5 in real-world use, this is still better than most budget systems.

OP has been cautious in how they pitched this system, when in fact, it's one of the best deals on the market right now for a brand new machine, especially under £200 and you have lots of expansion potential later on. It is incredible to think this £200 will match an i7 11th Gen machine. If you like tinkering and keep a bit of money aside, you can easily boost the RAM to 12 or 16GB, SSD to 256 or more and do a panel swap.

Can someone post the 8GB CEX chip info please? Which one basically.

Apparently this is the same laptop range. You would need one of those thin plastic pry tools to get the case open. Not a use a credit card option I think. Looks a very tight fit.

edit: I found a Brit during the same laptop chasis. Seems similar specc.

This is correct for this system - guitar plectrum pry tool should do it. You can use a credit card if you jam it in hard enough, you could also file/sand the card down first to make it thinner. The gap is wide enough to pop open. I recommend you do it at the back under the hinge as it is hidden and out of sight if the plastic gets slightly chewed up.

Yes, fine, but this is Patriot-branded (half-decent recognised brand) and under £30:

RAM and storage upgrades are practically mandatory at this spec, but the processor is good for the money...
    plewis00's avatar
RAM + SSD upgrades can be completed for around £30-35, yes, the system does need it but still comes in way under anything else.

Dummies question - is an i3 capable of streaming Youtube, Rumble, Netflix, UK TV channels via their apps? Basically, can this stream video with just an i3 CPU? (edited)
    LukeyWolf's avatar
    Yep

Numpty question but I need to ask just in case I got it wrong - if I use this with a brighter than 250 nits external monitor the laptop is capable of displaying the brighter external screen? The 250 nits being the limitation of the TN screen on the laptop rather than the hardware?
    Jaime_VanHunskerken's avatar
That's correct, the external display can be any brightness. (edited)

Went for it as 8GB stick only £13 delivered and have SSDs laying around .
    204 delivered next day.
So around £217 12gb for me with SSD I’ve already got.
See how bad TN panel is cf to my matebook 14 2k panel. (edited)

    First impressions
Budget type laptop what was I expecting for £200. Fan runs constantly not sure why ?
Maybe it’s 4Gb ram as cpu is fast enough.
Screen is ok but not brilliant. Not had chance to consume media yet.
The screws are large enough not like MacBook small or matebook type. Will try opening next few days but need pry tool tbh.
Apart from stupid fan which if it doesn’t behave will go back.
I would buy as much memory for it . Go for 16gb not 8GB as I did.
Fans come on when installing and browsing using 4Gb which is too low but no freezes yet. Showing 75% used at idle. (edited)

Mine has arrived, it's fine for what son will use it for. It's not as compact and as sturdy feeling his big brother's G50 which was a refurb job and bought from Link on HTUK last year.
    plewis00's avatar
It is quite a flimsy chassis compared to premium or mainstream models, it looks ok though, it's meant to be more of a machine you put down on a desk and work on without moving around too much. Spec-wise, still fairly unbeatable at this level.
  9. mat_smart's avatar
For a basic laptop to stream, surf, write emails, docs etc this is perfect. Gone for it
  10. gazter's avatar
Obviously there are some compromises built into this, but wow. Get a 256gb sd card and you'll be fine. What a deal. Hot hot hot.
Ps. Upgrading memory wouldn't ordinarily void a warranty, in the same way changing the oil in a car wouldn't void that either. (edited)
    plewis00's avatar
You can do the memory but have to remove the rubber strip feet which is a bit annoying.

Might as well get an 8GB stick for £10 at CEX and do the SSD at the same time.
  11. NorthumbrianWalker's avatar
Thanks, been on the lookout for a basic machine for my son moving to High school and this is a bargain.
  12. carson321's avatar
I know this isn't a brand new laptop, but why do we still have ones that aren't using USB-C for charging and video output, I can't imagine it would change the price point that much to have that vs dedicated barrel charger and HDMI etc.
    plewis00's avatar
You need extra power circuitry and regulation so understandable they have cut it on a cheap model. Video output definitely needs extra design consideration.
  13. majorwedgy666's avatar
Looks a great deal, no mention of which type of screen so expect tn. Add extra 4gb ram and hot yourself a nippy basic laptop
    plewis00's avatar
It’s TN/SVA, checked at HP, but the performance alone is miles ahead of anything else in this price range.
  14. plewis00's avatar
OP posted in the ASUS thread earlier and I suggested they post it as a deal: a 12th Gen i3-1215U CPU laptop for £199 new is incredible value. Some compromises but easily resolved. Performance so high on this newer i3 that it’ll match i7 11th Gen systems.

Screen is TN but at least at 250 nits brightness is ok.
4GB RAM and 128GB SSD are lower than average but can be upgraded - internal access by removing screws underneath and under rubber feet.

Similar system was posted around £300 before and everyone went crazy for it.

Very good find and value for money.
  15. simba2585's avatar
Super hot for the price. That screen would put me off using it though lol
    plewis00's avatar
It's a £200 laptop, that screen is one of the compromises to achieve that price point. This is ideal for a desk-based machine + external monitor.
  16. carson321's avatar
Anyone know what sort of dock might work with this?
    plewis00's avatar
Any generic USB C one but not with video.

Where do I put the discount code on the website?
Just accidentally bought for £249 whilst looking for the box so had to cancel the order.

    Update:
Re-ordered using PC not mobile site and voucher code box is on the payment page. Very misleading...
Also you cannot use the WELCOME payment code at the same time as the VKESG code. Customer service told me that only AFTER taking out the credit option. (edited)
    NorthumbrianWalker's avatar
It is on the payment page on "pay by debit/credit " tab

    Amazing deal, voted hot.

Can anyone advise whether spending ~ £35 on 2x8gb RAM sticks and ~ £50 on a 512gb m.2 would be worth it or of there's a sub £300 laptop out there with those specs already? Thanks!! (edited)

I've not seen a sub £300 laptop with a 12th gen i3 with 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD. I think you would be looking nearer £400 for that spec.

People aren’t realising how good of a deal this is. Maybe spoiled by the (now expired) i5 pavilion
    plewis00's avatar
I asked OP to post it the second they mentioned it, I didn't know why it wasn't already posted, they stumbled on a very good sleeper deal. Let's get the word out for them and get some hot votes in. The processor is extremely powerful for the money, never seen anything this fast for this cheap.
  20. TehJumpingJawa's avatar
    Playing devil's advocate here;
With this HP, the ram upgrade is mandatory, the ssd upgrade is necessary, the screen is poor, and the build quality is likely lacklustre.

For this price point there's a strong argument for the refurbished-good i5 8GB Microsoft Surface for £255, or the 16GB version at £318, as a vastly superior screen will enhance the overall user experience far more than a slightly faster processor. (edited)
    plewis00's avatar
This is a competitor to the ASUS Vivobook yesterday with 11th Gen i3. This is a brand new 12th Gen i3 which is faster - it does need a RAM and SSD upgrade, but even then you’re still under £250 with a brand new system.

The Surface Laptop 3 is from a seller who is known for variable quality and poor support, it’s a used system, it’s much slower than the HP and has no expansion or repairability other than the 2230 format SSD. If you are adding used laptops into the mix, there are better, value used purchases from ITZOO or CEX instead. This deal stands alone due to being brand new and an outstanding price for what you get with the option of adding RAM and storage later if you want, though it’s actually ok on Windows 11 S out of the box.

According to a response from HP support to that question on the HP site, 64GB. (edited)

It's a shame about the lack of dock support, feels like a deal breaker.. Gonna hold out for January sales I think, bound to be something decent.
    plewis00's avatar
You mean no video/Alt Mode and charging over USB C? Cheaper laptops don't include this support as it's another cost to factor in and needs additional power and signalling circuitry. Probably look at the slightly more costly and better quality Pavilion for this.

looking for a laptop too for my daughter, around the £200/£300 mark
    plewis00's avatar
This one is great value for a brand new system, you would be advised to upgrade the RAM and possibly storage as well.
  25. Tyronnster's avatar
Im looking for something like this but it has to be touch screen
    mat_smart's avatar
I'd have to say no chance for £200 new. Maybe something used on eBay

yes that's what I'm doing. I've got a KVM switch and the laptop will share a large screen monitor as well as mouse and keyboard with a Desktop PC
  27. tawse57's avatar
Is the display refresh rate a limitation of the panel or of the hardware?
    plewis00's avatar
The internal one will be 1920x1080 @ 60Hz, if you are connecting an external monitor you should be able to run at full resolution. How are you connecting it? And what is it short of?
