Good review from Home Cinema (reviewed at £799) - richersounds.com/media/pdf/H/C/HCC_342_Onkyo_AVR_Reprint_83c9.pdf

”Overall, Onkyo's TX-NR6100 is a sub-£1,000 receiver with serious appeal.” ’Home Cinema Choice’ – Highly Recommended.

Premium home cinema – guaranteed by THX
Extensively tested, the Onkyo TX-NR6100 meets THX Select Certification. THX are a Californian company founded by George Lucas of Star Wars fame. To gain THX approval, products are bench tested to a rigorous level, covering every aspect of audio performance. Only a handful of products gain the THX certification, making it a true badge of honour for any home cinema product.

Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and DTS Neural:X for cinematic sound
Carrying on this Onkyo AVR’s cinematic appeal, it’s compatible with both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Both formats use ceiling or upward firing speakers to deliver an immersive, multi-dimensional sound. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X make an overhead aircraft sound frighteningly realistic or a tropical storm a drenching experience. DTS Neural:X upmixes non-DTS:X signals, giving you a similarly enveloping sound with other sources.

Get the Atmos or DTS:X effect, without the extra speakers
It's not always possible to accommodate Atmos or DTS:X height speakers, which is when Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization and DTS Virtual:X come in handy. Play any Dolby format and enjoy a more immersive sound with virtual height enhancement – using your existing speakers. DTS Virtual:X also creates a more enveloping sound from any DTS codec. Compatible with 2, 5.1 or 7.1 speaker configurations, DTS Virtual:X gives a greater impression of height and immersive sound.

Klipsch Optimise Mode
Unique to Onkyo, the TX-NR6100 sounds even better when partnered with Klipsch Reference and Reference Premiere speakers. Collaboration between the two companies has resulted in the implementation of precise crossover vales being incorporated into the Onkyo. This means that you get optimised sound quality, at the touch of a button.

Enhanced 8K HDMI compatibility
Upgrading on previous Onkyo receivers, the TX-NR6100 features three, 8K compatible HDMI inputs and twin outputs (HDMI 2 output in Sub Mode only). They support 8K pass-through, 4K/120Hz and eARC, making them ideal for connecting an 8K TV, the latest games consoles and more. This Onkyo also supports the latest copy protection standard, HDCP 2.3.

Ideal for gamers
As well as suiting 8K TVs, the latest HDMI 2.1 interface also helps give your gaming a boost. This facilitates a range of features, including 4K/120Hz HDR pass-through for ultra-fast motion. VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) eliminates lag, stutter, and frame-tearing for fluid gameplay. ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) optimizes latency from source to screen and QFT (Quick Frame Transport) limits lag for a smoother experience. Put together, they give you a massive gaming advantage.

Highly capable music streamer
Much more than just an AV receiver, the TX-NR6100 is also a fully comprehensive music streamer. From Apple AirPlay 2 to Chromecast and taking in ‘Works with Sonos’, this Onkyo AVR has you covered. Direct access to Spotify (Premium account required for full features), Amazon Music HD, TIDAL, Deezer and TuneIn are all available via the Onkyo Control App. There’s even DTS Play-Fi for multiroom expansion, TuneIn for Internet radio and two-way Bluetooth for local music streaming and headphone listening.

Apple AirPlay 2 and Chromecast
Ideal for Apple users, AirPlay 2 takes this popular wireless streaming format and makes it better. Controllable by simply asking Siri or using your Apple device, AirPlay 2 lets you effortlessly stream music and podcasts around your home – and all in perfect sync. Chromecast lets you stream music, podcasts and audio apps, including Google Play, at the touch of a button.

Voice control
The Onkyo TX-NR6100 works seamlessly with your Smart Home ecosystem. Control via Siri when using Apple Airplay. Alternatively, connect to a suitable Smart speaker and the receiver then also works with Alexa and the Google Assistant.

Works with Sonos
‘Works with Sonos’ certification means that this Onkyo seamlessly integrates with your existing Sonos system. Once connected to a compatible Sonos product (Sonos Port), you can group the receiver with other Sonos devices or use it independently. Working with Sonos means as soon as you start playing music from your Sonos app, the Onkyo switches on and automatically selects the correct input.

DTS Play-Fi for effortless streaming and multi-room
DTS Play-Fi is a premium, wireless control system that brings everything under one 'roof'. Download the free app and you'll not only have access to Internet radio but also popular music apps such as Spotify, Tidal, Deezer and Napster. As well as bringing all your streaming sources together, Play-Fi offers the potential for full multi-room music. Simply add other Play-Fi compatible sources and you'll quickly be able to build up a comprehensive music system around your home - all under the control of a single app.

Connect it all - from USB device to turntable
When it comes to connecting all your music and AV sources, this Onkyo has everything covered – including your turntable (with Moving Magnet cartridge). As well as the turntable input there are four line level ones – ideal for a CD player, music streamer and other music sources. There are also digital coaxial and optical inputs plus a front-mounted USB for media playback.

Get a guarantee of the best performance, with the THX-approved Onkyo TX-NR6100.

    Hooray Onkyo deal!
    Haven't seen one in ages.
Glad to see the old jokes have been done and the usual collection of hifi snobs being outraged by the comments.
Must go fry an egg on my Onkyo amp....

Cold, its not an akai or an alba. Bought.

those were the two brands I desperately needed to add to the list, couldn't think at the time.
and akai is sort of respected in the world of studio equipment with their samplers,

their tape players, on the other hand, were atrocious, I had an akai from Dixons back in the day, also alba made astonishingly rubbish portable things, with 1.5w per speaker, I can shout louder than the volume they put out.

I have a 9 year old STR-DN1050, It's pretty powerful and mostly works fine, but it sometimes goes unresponsive/overheats and seems to create noise/buzzing through the subwoofer channel. (edited)

I feel the need to add Pye and Sharp. Just showing off my age with Pye but they did a mean single tape deck recorder... You know where you had to press the record and play button at the same time

Yeah Onkyo all the way! Had 2 AV receivers before and after my last one went on warranty repair Richer Sounds lost it in the warehouse! (still got the remote for it if anyone interested). After a fight with them they gave me Sony STR-DN 1040 as replacement... I do own Sony TV, Sony UHD Blu-ray player and PS4... Boy I miss Onkyo so much, another level in sound quality, connectivity (smartphone app, etc). Onkyo AV receiver for some reason communicated with my TV and other devices so much better, quicker. Hope that helps someone make a choice, can't wait to get rid of Sony and never again RS...

Have set my 6100 up now.... sounds good although I think I'll need to revert to using my separate phono stage/pre amp with low/rumble filter as I get alot of speaker rumble at high volume.

Other than that the amp sounds good, not a earth shattering improvement on my old Sony STR-DN1050 but that is 9 years old now and due an upgrade.

Most annoying things about the amp are...

The cheap and tacky remote control
The speaker connection do not allow for using banana clips and instead you have to push the speaker cable in and tighten down the connector.
The audio setup/microphone seems very hit and miss and in the end I just set my speakers manually.

Make sure you get the Fabric-care option. I spilt yogurt all over mine and was so glad it was covered.
