I've borrowed one of these from my neighbour. I then bought a Topdon one instead which is much better, in part due to the extra resolution. And the Topdon doesn't have to rely on mixing images from thermal and normal camera.

Here are some pics from my Topdon.52409471-omaph.jpg52409471-QNrtk.jpgLook at the mortar joints behind a plastered wall.

Hate to spoil the fun but the USB-C version only supports android.

The FLIR ONE Gen 3, FLIR ONE Pro, and FLIR ONE Pro LT are not compatible with iPhone 15 and later models. For iOS customers with USB-C ports, we recommend the FLIR ONE Edge or FLIR ONE Edge Pro.

I know this product is expensive but I rather be 100% than to hit a pipe next time I drill into the wall. How does the thermal camera compare to something like this?

These are 2 completely different things. Cheap camera if it will see, it will only show a pipe that is running very cold or very hot behind the wall. You're better off getting a cheap stud finder from amazon.

Pay a little more and get something with more resolution. 256 x 192 :

been reading the comments but no question about the usefulness of this for the lay person?

Most useful thing I can think of is finding cold leaks in your house, spotting cold spots on radiators that need bleeding. But otherwise it's probably mostly a toy for those curious!

Has anyone tried to detect mice behind a dry wall, and how effective is it? I can hear them moving around sometimes (edited)

It doesn't work like X-ray vision, unfortunately. Lots of people saying things like "I can see the pipes inside my walls". But they can't. They can just see the outer surface of their wall which has been heated up by the hot pipes inside. So you're not going to be able to see a mouse running around inside a dry wall. It there's a nest inside the dry wall and the warmth from that nest is enough to heat up the outer surface of the wall (which I doubt, personally) then you may see it as a warm spot, but then there are probably cold and warm spots all over most walls so it probably won't help you a lot.

FLIR advertise that the One is 'not' compatible with iPhone 15 and above (it's lightning port not usb-c).

I'd be very careful buying the iOS USB-C one. It doesn't exist.

    iPhone 15 models have a USB-C connector

    80x60 res.
Good for taking pictures of UFO's and ghosts then .
    pukenukem's avatar
That's too high for UFOs, they need to be way more fuzzy.

I got some uninformative thermal images of our house and some funny ones of my wife and our dog, but otherwise it has been in a drawer for a year.
    xybp9's avatar
try it out on your windows, doors, and any exterior walls. Or step outside your house on a cold day where the heating is on, and point the camera at your house. Surprisingly informative.
  10. BrianButterfield's avatar
See I'd rather sacrifice one of the 42 cameras our phones have now for a thermal one.
    Jonwillis's avatar
Thermal sensors are quite a bit more expensive. So long as you can take on an extra £80-100 then you'll be fine :-)

I borrowed this from octopus energy and I think it's too basic to be effective. No ability to modify the automatic temperature scale . Low res.
    Wooj's avatar
It works fine, it doesn't need to be high res for most users: point it at your front door, see the cold air leaks, adjust seals, job done. I've found a cold spot on a bedroom ceiling where the builders haven't insulated properly, making a claim against them to get it patched up. It should pay for itself pretty quickly!

I need to borrow one as opposed to buy and keep one. are there any good rentals out there?
Alternatively how much value do these hold if sold off on ebay?
    RoosterNo1's avatar
A lot of energy suppliers will loan them... Just ask yours.

Doesn’t work on iOS, tried an iPad and iPhone 15 and it won’t work at all, confusing on Amazon that it does and is the right one to get for USB-C this will be going back.

I have a topdon thermal camera. I am amazed that I can see the heat impression of my footsteps even when I have shoes on. Its like Call of Duty.

I’ve got a topdon tc002 for iPhone and can’t “see” inside walls, only surface mounted pipes are visible

20% discount not showing for me unfortunately. I do like the idea of it to give the house a once over but it's an expense gadget for something I'd use maybe a handful of times.

Got the topdon one from an offer on hukd a couple of months ago, was only a few quid more than this but a lot higher resolution (android)
I can see pipework from the central heating under floorboards and across ceilings 4 hours after it's turned off !
Can also see ceiling beams behind plasterboard faintly.
    h3dshot's avatar
Which model topdon did you get pal?
  18. PercyLongProng's avatar
Anyone know if this really is iOS only? After one of these for Android really
    Pattt's avatar
It shows in images its for android too. Also its USB C so it wlshould work on android.
  19. xybp9's avatar
dang a really excellent price (esp if you can get it with the home discount)

I bought mine for 133 on a warehouse deal in September. It came in really handy this year diagnosing leaky window seals and an arcing electrical switch in a utility closet. Saved me from an expensive and pointless visit from a heat pump tech

highly recommended for any home owner (edited)

I have this and the Topdon tc004.

The resolution is too low. For £220 you can get the tc001 and it is way more useful!

It's £260. Theres not many things where spending twice the price doesn't get you something better.

Paid less for my 256px resolution one. Just buy off china. Much cheaper
