Bit of a niche deal this one. It’s only compatible with a couple of Asus products including the ROG Ally handheld.

This is an external GPU, I/O hub and power supply.

Inside is a Radeon RX 6850M XT with 12gb GDDR6.

Prohibitively expensive on release, I don’t think it’s bad value at this price. They seem to sell for about £800-£900 second hand. There is a 3080m version from 2021 which has similar performance, but costs more than this second hand, and a new 4090m version that is extremely expensive.

It turns the already pretty powerful ROG Ally into a decent gaming PC.

Here’s some info from the manufacturer:

More Than Graphics. Less to Carry.

The 2022 ROG XG Mobile reinvents external graphics by combining performance and versatility with true portability. Despite being 7% of the size of typical eGPUs, this device harnesses up to a Radeon™RX 6850M XT GPU. Our exclusive interface avoids common bottlenecks and adds dedicated bandwidth for an integrated I/O hub. The built-in adapter powers the eGPU and laptop so you can travel light.

Look Sharp, Play Smooth

The ROG XG Mobile is the ultimate choice for flexible gaming and content creation. Long, flowing lines wrap around its chassis visually evoking the versatile ROG Flow X13. Textured grooves add grip for easy carrying, and mobile set-up is simple with the built-in stand. Precision cuts create a typographic cooling vent that illuminates the ROG name in a crimson glow.

Light Even Under Load

Despite delivering heavyweight gaming performance, the ROG XG Mobile is the lightest and most compact external GPU in the world. It’s significantly smaller than competitors, at just 7% of the size of typical eGPUs built for desktop graphics cards. Weighing in at only 1.2kg, it’s portable enough to pack up and plug in just about everywhere. The integrated 330W adapter even lets you travel without a separate power brick.

Amp Up Your Play

Maximise performance with our exclusive interface. Its direct PCIe®connection to the CPU dedicates bandwidth just to the graphics processor. A separate USB 3.2 Gen 2 link adds 10Gb/s for the I/O hub and prevents peripheral traffic from impeding graphics performance. Gaming is super smooth, especially when playing on the Flow’s integrated display, and accelerated work like 3D rendering and multimedia editing is fast and fluid. The 41cm cable gives you the flexibility to position the eGPU freely.

Beat the Heat

Advanced vapour chamber cooling keeps the ROG XG Mobile’s graphics strong. Our custom design increases contact area with the heatsink by 54% compared to a typical heatpipe layout, enabling faster thermal transfer and opening up more space for airflow. Combined with the XG Mobile’s space-saving standing design, this airflow-optimised cooling system enables more power in a super small form factor.

Adapt to Anything

It’s not just an eGPU; it’s a fully-loaded I/O hub. Plug prime gaming accessories into 4 USB Type-A ports. Grab footage and photos fast with the SD reader. Massively expand your screen space across up to 4* displays with HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4. Get online via 2.5G Gigabit Ethernet for low-latency multiplayer. And travel lighter with an integrated 280W adapter that powers the eGPU and laptop simultaneously. The XG Mobile takes a desktop-class experience wherever you go.

Go For Pro Level Speed

Experience fast and fluid gameplay delivered by a cutting-edge GPU. ASUS's top config has a Radeon™RX 6850M XT GPU. Build out a complete battlestation with a gaming mouse, gamepad, and more via four flexible USB Type-A ports. Plug into Gigabit Ethernet for the lowest latency connections for competitive online multiplayer.

Create Your Next Masterpiece

Powerhouse graphics and versatile I/O ports make creating content easier. Between the HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4, screen space can be extended across up to four* external monitors, all in 4K UHD resolution. Create cutting-edge content from streaming video to print-worthy art in ultra-rich detail.

Flex Next-Gen Versatility

Despite a form factor just 7% of the size of typical eGPUs, the XG Mobile offers uncompromised power for graphics-intensive tasks like gaming, multimedia editing, rendering, and more. Its ultra-compact dimensions weigh just 1.2kg, making it easy-to-carry anywhere.

IMHO the Ally is the wrong handheld to get if you want to use an egpu. These are cost prohibitive, and only work with Asus devices.

If you want a handheld console to dock with an egpu and use as a full gaming PC, get a legion go. You can pair that with a generic egpu, and you can upgrade the gpu over time.

I say this as a happy Ally owner.

I have the 16GB RTX 3080 version and use with both my Ally and Flow Z13. Really good and handy to have the extra IO's. (edited)

Ye ive heard good things, i was tempted but ive been waiting months i will just carry on hoping the 4090 will come down even a little bit haha.

I owned the 3080 and sold it on after a few months. The issue is it’s really not a seamless experience to dock or undock your Ally and you also have to go in and change all of your in game settings every time you switch between the two. It just felt like every time I docked it to play a game there would be at least 10-15 minutes of messing about with settings, updates etc before you are actually back in game.

If you don’t mind all the messing about that comes with it then it is a good desktop solution but until there’s a dedicated handheld gaming Windows OS that can make this more seamless then it just isn’t worth the faff IMO. (edited)

Standard day in the average PC gaming really! lol

I had the 3080 version of this and sold it on, it is unfortunately not the "switch" experience you'd expect for a variety of reason + the fact it's proprietary.

I've voted hot as these are like hen's teeth in the UK, but the approach for me is Desktop + Ally for on the go. Cloud saves make a better "switch like" experience than plugging the Ally in and out.

I can not really see the value of this, switch GPU is painful and not very stable.
You can get a console at half of this price, or a small gaming rig at this price, both could perform and have better user experience .

have you got one? i have and switching GPU is one button press and it takes between 6-8 seconds and then you can launch a game with new GPU instantly, how is that painful, also ive never had a crash other than at the server end, and my games play perfect 100fps in most games no complaints...

Love my ally it’s a great piece of kit and for most this would make it a decent desktop and a pc on the go I would think. Thanks for posting. Lovely bit of kit. (edited)

I’d be all over that for £700!

Its a good device but not for the price. Would not ever pay this price for a laptop gpu. I rather have main rig and ally as portable. My mrs tho is using her legion go as the main rig with the core x chroma and 3060ti.

im in a different use case i have the flow 13, laptop and use the laptop for work, weighs nothing and has an i9 so perfect for work then when i get home i can plug it in and play AAA games at 100FPS with the dock, yeah could i have got a thin and light laptop + a gaming PC, yeah but with monitor and 2 keyboards and mouses and the laptop + gaming PC would it have been cheaper like people keep telling me? i doubt it, i have a gaming rig, and a thin and light all in one here and have no complaints.

If a handheld owner has a reasonable desktop PC already it's just going to be cheaper to simply stream your desktop to the handheld.

A lot of negatives in here, I've been using 3080 and Ally as my handheld and only PC gaming setup for months and it's great!

That’s good to hear. Seeing all the negative comments I thought I’d made a mistake. Do you find the plugging and unplugging okay? (edited)

I've heard these things are nothing but grief. So many issues. Working fine one day, next day not working properly etc.
    comedychris's avatar
really? ive had mine a year and not had 1 single issue, literally not a problem, my only gripe is to remove the dock you need to press a button and wait 8 seconds you cant just pull the wire out because it changes drivers and bios stuff but, tiny daft thing, other than that its perfect

ASUS presence/stock in UK is getting poorer with every year. All UK gets is overpriced mid range hardware Flow series good example.
    comedychris's avatar
it is expensive for what it is BUT, it is super premium, ive had flow for a year now and use it daily, to have the ability to plug it in and play games at 100+fps but then just take the super light, tablet with the keyboard to work + travel and have a powerful "laptop" thats got an amazing screen and weighs nothing and has all good stuff, a laptop wouldnt be able to either be that light or play games without being massive compared, its not for everyone but im really happy with my choice over a slim laptop that couldnt play games or a big laptop that would be cumbersome to carry
