They're an illusion of value. None of us are professional chefs. One decent knife is far better value than a knife set. Also, like, integrated sharpener? Are you actually kidding me? How crappy must the knives be that they warrant sharpening that frequently?
Save your money. For the vast majority of people, a Victorinox santoku (non fluted), a Wusthoff chef knife, or something equivalent is far far better value for money than garbage knife sets with garbage knives you'll never use.

Mate, you can make a knife made of milk sharp... it's not a gauge of quality. How long it keeps an edge is the gauge of quality, and if the knifeblock has a built in sharpener (which will be crappy), that tells you all you need to know about how good the knives are. (edited)

Personally I like to go into a shop and hold them, hate having knives where my knuckles hit the table or just uncomfortable.
