Good price but can't vote hot as it's a very real possibility it will be bricked by three at some point. Better buying from CEX as you have 2 years guarantee.

If it is in a three box, it is the property of three. There is no route to customers buying three-branded boxes that I am aware of. The contracts specify that the router is three property and loaned to customers. Three also have control of the firmware, even if you "disable" updates (my box updated several times in such a situation). In theory, they might be able to remotely disable their boxes where contracts have ended and equipment has not been returned. I am unsure what would happen to firmware updates if you didn't connect to three. (edited)

So at the moment is it not possible to just buy a generic 5G router and install a WRT/Merlin type firmware on it so you get all good stuff like VPN, traffic management etc? I'm stuck on 40Mbit fibre but can't see being able to switch to 5G without giving up all the control.

Get a fibre broadband that has a router with 5G backup. BT offer this but not sure if its 4G or 5G as backup

I've just received mine. I stuck my 3 sim in it and it booted up okay. Before I chance to login, it started flashing white: wifi=>network=>signal for 2 or 3 minutes.
After switching off and trying again it just kept doing this flashing. I then scoured some forums and found that this might be a firmware update, so I left it and it eventually came back.

95.5Mbps download 3.95Mbps upload. 4ms latency. I just hope this works at my Dad's house where I've bought it for, coz his 4g connection is poor as anything at the moment.

Once I had logged in, it was asking me to agree to T&Cs to do auto-updates... once I agreed with that I saw in the Firmware update settings that it had indeed already updated itself. (edited)

As you appear to be well within the timeframe for returning it, would you consider contacting Three and quoting the serial number and/or IMEI and asking them to confirm if it legally belongs to them or not?

Given that eBay is saying the seller has already sold 19 and has more than 10 currently available, and the seller is claiming "Opened - never used" condition, is it not possible/likely that the seller has negotiated a legitimate 'bulk' supply?
    ZeBadger's avatar
Mine wasn't opened and didn't look used.

    Apparently, there are hidden menus:

    http://192.168.0.1/index.html#temp_status
    http://192.168.0.1/index.html#debug_page

Edit: removed firmware links as the forum I'm reading is mostly people bricking their device. (edited)
