One way way to check if AirPods are genuine is by checking if they automatically switch from iPhone to Mac when a video is played on the Mac (same Apple ID must be logged in on both)

Not many fakes have this feature. Genuine AirPods will transition

Fingers crossed they aren’t swapped fake return- I ve had that before! Some of them are very very hard to tell they aren’t genuine!

3rd gen that much better than 2nd? Since can get 2nd new for the same price as this

There are two main differences.

1) controls: you can tap 2nd gen to, eg, skip or pause music. 3rd gen you need to squeeze. It’s fiddlier and less intuitive. I use it less and am more likely to pick my phone up. But I still prefer 3rd gen because

2) waterproofing. 3rd gen are sweatproof. 2nd gen let sweat in at the mic grille and you’ll end up with corrosion and functionality issues. No such issues with 3rd gen but dry them off before putting back in the case or the contacts in there will corrode. I use mine mainly at the gym, so this is important to me. (edited)

I’ve had great experiences generally with AW except for AirPods and Raybans that were clearly fake.

I suspect that people are purchasing off Amazon and sending back fakes.

Edit: I’ve taken a punt on these as I do want some 3rd generation AirPods. Will assess a return based on condition and authenticity. (edited)

Considering how expensive these are doesn't Amazon check the serial number matches their system, to prevent people swapping out fakes?

My recent experiences has been, good reputable sellers on eBay have been more reliable than Amazon warehouse- their standards have dropped significantly last 5 yrs of my 15 yr experience with them. QC not as great as they used to be.

Infact I ve stopped buying luxury electronics from warehouse anymore. They are NEVER as they are described not properly tested. This include psu motherboards, headphones in ear phone’s, etc. just bite the bullet and buy brand new. I m tired of pot luck! (edited)

Anyway to verify they are real and not a fake customer return? Fakes these days have the same instant pairing as the originals along with matching serial numbers and even warranty information in the settings.
