    The picture doesn't show Ponta Delgada - it is showing the tiny island ( Ilhéu de Vila )which is just off the south coast of Ponta Delgada. Ponta Delgada is a bigger island and more populated, for anyone who didn't know - like me. (edited)

    *Ilhéu da Vila is 1 mile away of the village of Vila Franca do Campo. In the summer you can get a boat from Vila Franca do Campo Port and stay the day (or just a few hours) there (I highly recommend it). The island is called São Miguel (not Ponta Delgada). Ponta Delgada is the Capital and the biggest and most populous city in the Azores. (edited)

    If you're going for any decent length of time then you need to island hop or you'll get bored fairly quickly.

    Look how small that island is though, where's the runway? Probably why the flights are so cheap. The return leg will have to be done on a home made raft with only a volleyball as your companion.
