The fēnix 7X Solar is a GPS watch from Garmin.

It is a high-end watch with a 1.4" screen just like the 6S. The advantage of the 7X Solar is that there is a built-in solar charging system. In addition, the torch is only integrated on the 7X model.

The design of the fēnix 7X Solar is very strong and robust and has been tested to US military standards for heat and water resistance.

This watch has a sensor on the wrist to measure your heart rate during your sports activities in order to evaluate your rhythm. There is also a pulse OX sensor, which allows you to determine the absorption of oxygen in your body, rather useful during your climbs at altitude!

You can access several satellite navigation systems to find your way in any environment. A barometer, altimeter, compass and gyroscope are included in the watch, so you will be able to orientate yourself no matter where you are.

Thanks to PACE PRO, you will be able to receive personalised advice during your sporting activities, which is practical for trail running!

The topographical maps will be there to orient you during your outings, the navigation is detailed and will allow you not to get lost. And also, the mapping is integrated!

When you pair your watch with your mobile device, you will receive email and SMS notifications directly on your watch. So you won't need to worry about changes in the weather any more.

The fēnix 7X Solar has new features, and is equipped with buttons as well as a touch screen, allowing you to improve your navigation. In addition, an LED torch is integrated into the fēnix 7X Solar, which is very practical. You will also be able to access several global satellite navigation systems.

The STAMINA function will allow you to track and manage your energy throughout your activities. In addition, the activity profile will offer you a selection of workouts, displaying tips throughout your workouts and even setting your work/rest times.

The Race Predictor Trend function will be very useful, as it displays a graph allowing you to track your abilities and performances.

Finally, on the ski and cross-country ski slopes, you will be able to view the names of the slopes and their levels of difficulty with the SKIVIEW™ feature, which has information on more than 2000 resorts around the world!

You can easily change the bracelet to suit your taste without any tools, which is very practical!

Finally, there are many accessories to complete your watch, such as a speed sensor!

Too expensive for an old model like this. If you really want this then you can get it direct from Garmin for £454.99 through one of the many affiliate discount platforms e.g. TOTUM, Unidays, Vitality etc.

Old? I thought it only launched in last year or so?

Looks like a French company, hopefully no issues with warranty.

I haven't seen too many good deals on the Epix 2 Pro 47 recently. The cheapest just now seems to be direct from Garmin through one of the many affiliate discount platforms at £671.49. Amazon are about a tenner more. Obviously you can pick up better prices if you are prepared to go risk going down the eBay route.

If the 47 is definitely the size you want then I really can't see much point in going for the Pro at that sort of price. The only major hardware differences between the Pro and the original Gen 2 are the new HR sensor and the flashlight, increased memory storage and multi band GPS. Most, if not all, the software upgrades have now filtered down to the original Gen 2. (as usual DC Rainmaker starts his excellent review of the Pro with a list of all the differences). All these are nice to have but, in my view, not worth paying a huge amount extra for.

Given that you can still get the original Gen 2 from H Samuel for £375 then I would have thought that that would make more sense for most people. Clearly, if you want the 42 or the 51 sizes then the situation is somewhat different as the original Gen 2 only came in the 47.

Still slightly cheaper through Garmin for any Blue Light members who might be looking. £455.

Bought a 7x Sapphire from CEX grade C recently for £355. Buttons not great and Garmin have replaced with a refurbished version. I struggle to see with the 47mm so 51 was a no brainer.
This is after trying the Suunto Tace for 5 months. Great watch but poor updates sadly, especially when it’s a 51mm size at half the price.

looking at either this or a 2nd hand apple watch ultra - anyone used both? Will be upgrading from a Fenix 3 - I'm less of an athlete these days if that makes a difference

If you are really into your fitness, then the Garmin is much better. The Garmin Connect is great, the mapping and route-planning is amazing when hiking, the data is better, the battery lasts a week, and the buttons and non-touch screen means you can use it when you're sweaty or it's raining.

If you're more into the Apple universe with just a bit of exercise on the side, then the Apple Ultra will be your choice. The Garmin doesn't really allow you to reply to messages or interact much with the phone, except to flash notifications which you dismiss. The Apple watches allow a much better interaction with their ecosystem. You also find for music that the AirPods match up.

It really depends how much you like the health stuff and need a good battery vs how much you would like to use the Apple features.
