Once you have one, you'll never know how you rode without it.

I've been looking for this probably since Christmas and this is the cheapest I have found the UK spec rear radar.
Yes, Decathlon have it a penny cheaper but £3.49 delivery.

- Rearview radar with tail light provides awareness of vehicles approaching from behind up to 140 metres away
- Pairs seamlessly with your Edge bike computer and compatible smartphone as well as select Garmin wearables or the radar display unit
- When used with your compatible smartphone, the Varia app provides graphics — plus tone and vibration alerts — that indicate approaching cars
-Daylight visibility up to 1 mile alerts motorists to your presence as soon as possible
- Compact vertical design mounts easily to most road-use bicycles
- Peloton mode provides a low-intensity light flash that is perfect for cycling in groups
- Battery life: up to 16 hours in day flash mode, up to 6 hours in solid mode

It's a great addition to your bike, but they only give you a little elastic band to hold it.
I didn't want to trust £100 to that, so bought a proper mount amazon.co.uk/TUS…P3/

Agreed. Bought this also. Much more secure

I’ve not heard of anyone who has used a Varia unit and not liked it.

Heads up visible indicator when a vehicle is approaching from behind, turns red if vehicle is approaching at speed.

Audible alert can be turned on/off.

Doesn’t replace the over the shoulder look, but is an eye looking behind you at all times, invaluable IMO, particularly when almost silent electric cars are more popular.

I still have the original and smaller RTL500 and has been faultless.

edited to add ; credit to MarkSpanner, I totally forgot about an important feature of these devices, the fact it flashes brighter and quicker when it detects a vehicle. (edited)

+1 for this. Best thing I have ever bought for my bike, invaluable on any road.

FYI – Halford currently have 20% off £150 spend, so brings this to £135.20, plus another £3.45 if using TopCashback and if you wait until tomorrow they have £2 extra Cashback too... So actually a few pence cheaper if you don't want to donate money to Mr Bezos next cock rocket.

That's actually a good stack of savings there, as long as the cashback tracks. Thanks for sharing a great alternative (edited)

Its good piece of kit. Good for solo riders. Iv got good hearing so Im good, however they do a camera type in this too. Been keeping my eye open for it. Some brits don’t like cyclists, they think the road is just for them. I always wonder what came 1st? The cycle or the car?

How does this work when riding in a group?
    Andy306's avatar
it only picks up something going faster than you

    Waste of money.
Looking over your shoulder is free and more accurate.

How to tell someone you don't cycle without telling them you don't cycle.

I have decent hearing too, so I can detect EV vehicles pretty much 20m away. But it's an interesting piece of kit for beginners no doubt. When travelling at 18-22 mph I'm more concentrated on avoiding pot holes than wondering whats behind me.
My setup is a bright rear light 60+ lumens always on during the day. (Garmin Varia maxes out at 60 lumens). I find 99% of cars overtake over the 1.5m distance when theres enough road space.
Take centre space when the road is too narrow, so cars wont want to close pass overtake you.
Looking to spend similar money on a go pro front mount (2nd hand) to capture any close passes/speeding, touch wood minor/serious incidents. (edited)

Garmin should make a device with a front camera that locks the wheels at redlights
    toad679's avatar
Is that to stop cars going into the ASL box?

Is this the first time a Varia deal has been posted without someone, who has never used one, saying silly things against them? Fantastic piece of kit, worth every penny, all 13,000 of them.
    Uncle_Arthur's avatar
    nope.

Heat added. 100% expecting Garmin to update this with USB C soon, but I can't see what else they'd add, it's a damn near perfect product.
    nc2022's avatar
As someone above mentioned they do one with a camera. I wonder if it's got USB-C?
I owned the cycliq cameras and they were fine until the slightest shower then they'd let water in and they were pretty much ready for the bin. Hopefully they might have fixed that in the newer model but mine was a gen2 model so who knows.. There's a real gap in the market for a decent light/camera for cyclists. Gopros just don't seem to be up to the task for regular longer rides

I bought the unit without a light and use it with an igpssport computer. It's also paired to my wife's unit simultaneously, so I always ride slightly behind (sometime far behind when I'm struggling to keep up!) and we both get notifications from a single unit. Detects way before I have any awareness of a vehicle being present, utter game changer and wouldn't ride on road without it now.

Are these only compatible with Garmin GPS units? I have a Wahoo Bolt V2.
    jig2480's avatar
Yes mate - I have the camera version of this and it connects to my bolt v1 fine. I don’t think it shows as many features as the Garmin, but it tells me when a car is approaching (a small car symbol- bit like a 80’s arcade graphic!).

I didn’t really see the point, but gave it a go after getting a deal with Garmin through Blue Light Card - I find it really useful for when I am on country lanes as my hearing is a bit naff - it alerts, I make sure I am keeping as far in as I can. It’s less good in built up areas with traffic - but then just assume something is always there anyway

Doesn't fit not circular seat posts. I have to tape mine on.
    toad679's avatar
Lots of places doing mounts for non-round/aero seat posts and saddle mounts (Fizik ICS. Bont Verse, Giant Uni etc ) . Try racewaredirect.co/ who also do mounts with built in Air tag holders. They did a bespoke TT seat post mount for me at a very reasonable price.

I'm tempted but I think it would turn me in to a nervous wreck. Traffic is always going to be coming up from behind you so I may find it distracting with the road ahead.
    MarkSpanner's avatar
I have found the opposite. I use this on country roads where I used to be nervous due to cars that were unaware and/or inconsiderate. The fact that I know cars are flying up behind and that the unit flashes brighter to warm them makes me more aware and less nervous.
When a car is coming up behind I can also pull over and be considerate to them as well.
My Garmin unit does an audible chirp when a car is approaching and a different one when it is clear, so you don't have to look at the unit, meaning less of a distraction.

In case anyone didn't want to order through Amazon, Decathlon has this for the same price.

As in my description, plus £3.49 delivery but yes, it might be worth it to stick it to the cowboy spaceman.

never ride without this now, anyone saying they can hear cars, i would guess not at the range of this radar, especially as this can detect around corners so even out of line of sight... show me a mirror that does that!

i cycle fast and wind noise hugely reduces my ability to hear vehicles until they are close
    alexf's avatar
With the prevalence of EVs increasing, it's not always possible to hear cars either.
