If you fancy splashing out, renfe first class is very affordable (well, anywhere is affordable compared to the UK). There's a lounge with food & drink in most stations, nice seats, total ticket flexibility and food/drinks on train.

haha this price for high speed rail. Meanwhile in the UK this will cost the price of a 1 mile journey / next station - single ticket mind!!!

Ryanair + High Speed Train + Food + Accommodation in Spain = Cheaper than sitting at home in the UK..... Time to apply for my visa....

UK trains are really expensive and out-of-date compared with the Spanish ones.

Only 40 years later we'll show the EU how much better we are with our own high speed rail!

In Spain remember you have to go through a security check before you can access the platforms. So you need to arrive 30 mins before.

Also Ouigo is a budget operator - watch out that you are charged for luggage above a cabin sized suitcase, and for extras like choosing your own seat (there are some dreaded "middle seats in a 3" on these trains), which don't have armrests either).

Still some great deals in Spain... Thanks to competition I add too. (edited)

Totally right on the potential to be charged for luggage.

You don't need to arrive 30 mins before though - 10 mins is enough. The security check is nothing like the one for the plane. You just put your bag through a large x-ray machine and as a result the queue is usually small and fast moving.

For some context - normal prices eg if you want a Return today:

    MAD-VAL 360km takes 126 / 114 / 114 minutes e77 Single

    LON-YORK 314km takes 110 / 114 / 109 minutes £123 to £128 Return

Their high speed service is in practice slower than ours given their mandatory airport-style check-in Edit: it seems you can risk rocking up to the security check just 5-10 minutes before departure, meaning average speeds are about the same. (edited)

Are you a politician? This is the most deceptive comparison you can make.

How about MAD-BCN 627km (double distance LON-YORK) in 150 minutes and I've regularly paid £8.

And the suggestion of airport style check in times is a joke. I've regularly turned up at the station 5-10 mins before, whisked my bag through a massive x-ray, and still always caught the train. Good luck doing that at the airport...

Their trains can often be very uncomfortable. People put their luggage under their seat and i had minus leg room with it sticking out. I could only dream of the legroom you get in ryanair.

Need some travel advice! We are traveling to Barcelona and staying there for 3 days and then travelling to Madrid by train for another 3 days before flying back. Would you recommend Valencia as a day trip from Madrid in this itinerary? Thanks
    chrisfdh's avatar
I would definitely recommend Valencia, but it would be quite rushed to do it in a day. Could you shave off one night in either Barcelona or Madrid and then go Barcelona to Valencia to Madrid (or vice versa)?
Seville is a very nice city to visit too.
