We have one. We love it. Really easy to use with a reasonable app.
No doubt someone will now say that they're rubbish and I'm an idiot but my experience has been pretty positive with it for the 5 years or so that we've had one. (edited)

I have one and it works so can't grumble on that. The only thing I don't like is if you were to move homes the new owners would have to replace the thermostat. Once it's registered it's locked to your account and cane be unregistered for the new owners. Personally I think that's a bit of a scam.

I have 2 - one upstairs, one downstairs. After some trial and error it works well. Here's what I wish I had known prior to installing-
It's really just a wireless thermostat and on/off switch. Follow the instructions to the letter.
The on/off switch (the Receiver) is designed to fit on the standard heating controller backplate Mine did. But I needed to move one wire that a previous engineer had misplaced!
It works on the zigbee wireless system so your existing WiFi is irrelevant. This means, a max distance about 20m thermostat to receiver. I had to install a Hive range extender (£40).
To connect to the Internet you need the Hive hub plugged into your router, and less than 20m away .
You don't need to purchase heating plans etc. It works fine without them, and will eventually stop pestering you to do so.
Buy the Hive mini. Its cheaper and better looking After you've installed you will always use the online app to program/monitor.
Does it save money? Probably not but I like being able to monitor the temperature in my house and, eg, turn the heating up for a couple of hours before I came back from holiday.

PS - I needed to phone the helpline (try 0333 2029614) to swap a thermostat. They answered after 15 minutes and were actually surprisingly good and sorted the issue. No charge.  (edited)

I recently installed, along with numerous Hive TRVS. I might be getting old, but can't get my head round the programming of them, ie You have the main Thermostat which switches the heating on, but the TRV's also have ability to command the boiler on and off, but when you just want one radiator to go on, it still tells the main thermostat to boost to 25 degrees, obviously I needed a radiator to remain on standard always on valve (which we choose the bathroom). I can decide if I need to stick the main thermostat in a room (probably the shed) without a radiator, or keep it on a temp that is way below the ever expected temp.

I just want to be able to pick at anytime one or a selection of rads to switch on on demand.

Sounds like you've got it about right. The main thermostats has to go on to turn on your boiler and pump. Think of it more in terms of you can switch unused radiators off to save money. If you have a radiator without a trv, that is probably the room to keep your main thermostat in. You can change the main thermostat boost temp in the app, 25 is quite hot!

So might be a stupid question but what is the difference between this and the other offer on AMazon?

    this one?

Is it just missing the hive hub? I already have the hub so all I have to do is replace my old thermostat with the mini on this link and connect to hive hub?
    Camiano's avatar
Yes. You only need one Hub. All your Hive kit will connect to it. I bought 2 thermostats (as I have 2 separate boilers) - one with Hub, one "hubless". Both connected to the one single Hub.
Here's what my Hive App shows -

Literally the worst smart controller on the market - do not waste your money on this garbage

Hive is a non modulating thermostat its a dumbo ON or OFF with a modulating thermostat you get variable flow temperatures much more comfortable and more  efficient.  (edited)

Think the most annoying thing is, that after spending £700 on the kit including TRV's they have the bloody cheek to try and charge £5 a month as a Subscription in the App, to just be able to see a chart of usage for last week, they give you today and yesterday for free. Wow.

That is basically all the £5 will give (Apart from the usual crap about it will help you see and save on heating bills over the year)

I wanted one of these, then I just saw the price of the Radiator Valves.

    Mamma Mia!

If you're replacing a thermostat then this is fine, if you want smart heating then look elsewhere - Drayton Wiser!

That's why I bought it really. Needed something better then the one I have.

Just purchased a place and thinking about the heating system. It's a water tank for the hot water and a newer unit for the radiators.

Any ideas of somthing that would work in this case if looking to move to combi in the future?

Don't know if its just me but can't get the hub to work at all. Great thermostat but try as I may, it just doesn't connect.

I've had this for 4 years now had exactly the same issues.

I've had one of these for just over 6 years. The hardware has been great but the the software has definitely had it's ups and downs. Started off great but for the last year or so they are constantly pushing the hive plus subscription which has become quite annoying. I would still recommend it but only just.

utter garbage thermostat. certainly not smart, but certainly the worst stat out there. I'm currently developing my own thermsostat using a raspberry pi, but specially for uninsulated properties, as there's a more effective method to heat up your old house that the off the shelf thermostats don't allow for

I recommend Drayton Wiser instead of Hive though (edited)
