Get informed before parting with your cash. See these reviews.

Just moving this here for the TLDR crowd.

"At PCMag, our expertise lies in evaluating products, not international relations. Based on their merits, we still give high marks to Kaspersky’s security products. However, with the increasing censure and criticism of Kaspersky by US government agencies, foreign agencies, and informed third parties, we can no longer recommend that you buy Kaspersky’s products. Please, make another selection—we’ve evaluated dozens and dozens of products in the security realm." (edited)

    ncsc.gov.uk/blog-post/use-of-russian-technology-products-services-following-invasion-ukraine

We've had enquiries from people worried about their home IT. It almost certainly remains the case that nearly all individuals in the UK (and many enterprises) are not going to be targeted by Russian cyber attack, regardless of whether they use Russian products and services.

If your personal laptop uses Kaspersky AV (or other products):

    - it's highly unlikely to be directly targeted
    - it’s safe to turn on and use at the moment

However, you may need to move to a new AV product if Kaspersky itself becomes subject to sanctions, since the AV product would likely stop getting updates (and AV software is only effective if it's updated regularly). (edited)

I used to use Kaspersky it's a good product but being a Russian company I wouldn't use their antivirus these days. (edited)

How is the VPN service on this brand, is it slow? And can you use it on Netflix to change the region to USA?
    scholesy27's avatar
    scholesy27
Works fine and US netflix works, peacock too but if using a phone you need to put it in airplane mode for peacock

I'm going to post this on every VPN deal as an FYI: you can set up your own, for free (up to about 160GB monthly usage), but it's not for the faint-hearted - on the plus side, did I mention it's free? You need to add your credit card details, but your card won't be used if you stay in limits (just use a virtual card with a small amount on it anyway). Full details: github.com/pat…xit

Speaking as an IT consultant, before you spend any money on paid security software, consider putting the money in a savings account instead. It’ll do far more for your mental health than dealing with irritating security software from any brand ever will.

Just a thought, if you want everything Kaspersky offers (as far as I am aware) then Kaspersky premium is the same price, includes all of this and a few other extra security bits

    Microsoft Defender?

Kaspersky blocks or alerts you of so much stuff trying to sneakily install itself while browsing it's worth having.
It highly unlikely Microsoft Defender would be as thorough.
I go on some pretty dodgy websites and never get inflected.

As above I was a long term kaskpersky user but it doesn’t feel right to use it anymore. Everyone had their own choices to make.

Yeah, I've used it since 2019 but can't see me renewing it this year when my 2 year sub runs out. Will probably go Bit Defender.

Get the VPN service. All should be using a VPN. And this comes with it for next to nothing.

Why is it so cheap compared to others?

It's not. They periodically run promotions to get you to join and hope you'll renew at full price, just like every other antivirus.

    @Chrizy

"Why is it so cheap compared to others?"

Exactly as mentioned elsewhere. Sales are down due to said association.

I really liked the product but have now moved to another. Antivirus hooks into the deepest parts of your system, so vendor trust is very important.

Although my issue is more to do with what the vendor may be forced to do by law.

I went for the kaspersky Premium deal (link in thread somewhere) for £9.99. It came with everything (pass manager etc) but also included unlimited VPN for the main device.

Looks a great price... I had no idea they dropped so cheap.
TOTAL version for 10 devices is just 12.99 so that would cover both our laptops/tabs/phones, plus media player, with 3 spare.

The standard version - 1 years 10 devices is also £9.99 if you don't need any of the extras.

Would grab one but got 13 months left! (edited)

Paid versions of antivirus are a waste of money. The free versions are the same antivirus engine as the paid.

You might as well use the free version if you want one. Does the same job.

Unless times have changed - they're nagware though?

They also have only the bare minimum features. Though that may be all you need and/or want.

Does this come with unlimited VPN? I went with the deal and I seem to have a 500mb a day limit....which I'm not actually sure how much usage that would cover but I suspect not a lot if your watching films etc

This is a long thread, but I think someone did mention that the base product does not included unlimited.
Searching suggests Kaspersky Plus does give unlimited (but only the 1 main account).
