The white Redmi 10 2022 I bought has updated fine, including to Android 13 and MIUI 14 this week, the blue one is stuck on Android 11 and MIUI 12.5. Customer service are useless and just say I have to wait for the update to come, even though the phone has never been updated and is now 9mths out of date.
In short, I'm saying that if you buy one and it doesn't immediately find a few updates once set up, consider returning it for replacement with the 14 day cooling off period. These phones have been out a while now, and they never come with the latest update installed, so if it says there aren't any available then it's possible it simply won't get any going forward.
Support for these phones ends DEC2024 so less than 18mths remaining anyway. Personally I'd pay more to buy something with a little more longevity and reliable updates such as a cheap Samsung or even the Pixel 6a if you can find one on offer. (edited)
Is it really a problem if the mobile is not updated? Will the phone actually work after the expiry date?
With PCs a lot of users still use Windows 7 which is long past its date. In my experience most frauds are caused by following links and entering data. Banks send out bumph by email, but this can be ignored. Golden rule is delete all emails that are not expected or from unknown senders.
A big danger is where friends email addresses have been stolen and used for frauds etc. Just phone them if not sure. Ignore all unknown calls, although annoyingly NHS hospitals often use anonymous numbers for contact about appointments. Google is very good at flagging spam calls with the option to confirm whether OK or not.
In my experience you still get security updates for quite a while after.
Any phone will work for years after all updates stop.
As you say YOU are the biggest security risk not the device itself.
I am not over fanatical about updates like some are, just be sensible and you'll be fine.
Nothing stops you increasing your own security by installing an antivirus security app. (edited)
It is better than the competition by far. Want the extreme features at near this price? BUY SECOND HAND. The battery life will be c-rap on an old Apple or Google Pixel, but you'll have the vastly better camera and video functions.
