Anybody had any luck de-yellowing Dreamcast stuff?

If all my childhood consoles and controllers, my Dreamcast is by far the worst.

It's more yellow than my teeth.

Jerome Russell blonde Cream Peroxide, 40 Volume, 12% Peroxide - amazon for only £1.50

Coat the DC in this stuff, cover with cling film and sit in the sun for about 3 hours and it will be sparkly white.

Do it to all of my Dreamcast shells, even old DMG gameboys.

Decent price. These are hilariously easy to take apart compared to other controllers as well, therefore really easy to clean and retrobrite/litebrite if you wish.

Also the early variants were really built to last. These things had magnetic Hall-effect analogue sticks and triggers which are far more resistant to stick drift than what's commonly used nowadays. Tech heads are only starting to push for this tech to be reinstated onto modern controllers pretty recently.

Sadly the final run of dreamcast controllers used the drift prone potentiometers for its analogue stuff (I think it was just the stick, not sure about triggers). Tough luck if you happen grab one of those I guess.

Always wondered what that screen is for? Thought you can use it as a display to play?

as says - IIRC the slide in part had a triple purpose. I was the memory card, it had a screen that provided extra information in games, and it allowed you to play very simple games on the VMU itself. I think they hoped it would almost become a mini gameboy.... but as chowchilla says they ended up being a simple tamagotchi (you could carry the vmu around in your pocket and the tamagotchi worked even if not plugged into the controller.)

I had the DC at launch but at almost £8 for a nasty crusty dirty used 25yr old wired controller I vote cold. Go back to your Games Master and Bad Influence YouTube videos if you're really harking back to your nostalgia days instead you middle ages goats voting this deal hot (edited)

The Dreamcast is very easy to paint if you are inclined towards making a custom console. as others have said, they are verye asy to dissasemble and quite often turn yellow so this can be an alternative to that. Nice fun project, here's one I did a year or so back.

Still got my launch console, remember my mam taking me to HMV after school and bagging one.
You could go on websites back then with the Dreamcast, it was 1p per minute, seemed good value at the time... mind back then a page did take about 20-30 seconds to load

Those VMU were fab, with the little extra games on them etc. Dreamcast was ahead of its time.

Buying a dreamcast and modding it was one of the best things I done a couple year back. Some great games on the system.

Decent price if it’s in good condition. I picked up 4 new controller and 2 VMUs for £15 a few years back on eBay. They’ve gone up in value a bit.

For me it was Soldier Of Fortune, I'm absolutely garbage at gaming, I don't game but a mate lent me the console plus games when he bought himself the original Xbox.

Anyway somehow managed to finish it (albeit with the help of a walkthrough)

Wish I never got rid of mine. Absolutely legendary console. Think most people didn't realise as well that this console has zero copyright protection on the games.

Could literally put them in your pc and copy them to another blank disc. (Never did this btw)

To be honest the DC controller is a bit flawed, it really needed to have had two analog sticks rather than just one. Given the amount of PC ports it had it was a pity that it couldn’t use a twin stick control system as seen on the DualShock controllers, it makes FPS games feel clunky with just the one. I had Unreal Tournament and Quake III on my DC, but PS2 shooters felt so much better to play.

Ah Dreamcast controller, the most uncomfortable first-party controller I've ever used. Designed to ergonomic perfection it is definitely not.

I wish SEGA, Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft would do a limited production run of some new controllers for their old systems, since the controllers tend to fare much worse than the systems themselves. I thought it was really cool how Nintendo released the GameCube controller again for Smash, and that it was fully compatible with the GameCube system and not just exclusively for the Wii U/Switch version of Smash. I remember when these and VMUs were dirt cheap on eBay a few years back, there was also quite a few sealed games including Jet Set Radio. Wish I had stocked up at the time!

The most nonsensical controller in the world. Only one analogue stick in the post Dual Shock-era? Cord at the bottom? Rumble as an addon? I like keeping original controllers for emulation, since I stopped using original hardware. I did not keep any of these crappy controllers.
    Andysan's avatar
I think in its defence, dual analogue sticks were still pretty new and hadn't really been exploited into the defacto setup for navigating 3d spaces as they are today.

The cord can be clipped into place at the top of the console. The thing I didn't like about the controller was it felt a bit too circular, it needed slightly more of a winged design to it.
