You can get the equivalent to premium by opening duolingo on a web browser and opening up a class.
Use the app from then on for premium features.

    Free!

Duolingo Classes will wind down and retire on January 18th, 2023. This means hosts and learners will no longer be able to host or attend classes, and the Classes website will not be accessible.

Whats everyones thoughts on Duolingo? Does it actually teach you enough to have a conversation in another language?
    qwertybobby's avatar
Mixed thoughts. It's given me a good vocabulary, and understanding of the rules; hence a strong ability to read and write. Needs to be supplemented though with conversation. (edited)

Has anyone tried accessing this offer from other countries via VPN? Is it cheaper in other currencies?
    couponchaser's avatar
OK, I just did it. The best country to buy the annual Plus subscription is Turkey for £11.08. Here is my finding:

    UK: £47.99.
    USA: $59.99 = £49.77.
    Canada: CAD 95.99 = £58.74.
    Spain: €81.99 = £72.50.
    Turkey: TRY 249.99 = £11.08.
    Argentina: USD 23.99 = £19.90.
    India: No such offer.
    China: No such offer.
    Morocco: $30.99 = £25.71.
    Mexico: MXN 699.00 = £29.74.
    Indonesia: No such offer.
    Colombia: COP 134,900.00 = £23.48.
    Ukraine: $30.99 = £25.71.
    South Africa: ZAR 479.99 = £23.47

If you have a vpn, certain counties get unlimited hearts. That’s all I’ll say in case this gets deleted but a quick Google will set you on the right path
    Matt538's avatar
You get ad free and unlimited hearts even just with schools.duolingo.com, and it doesn’t require a student email (edited)

Strongly recommend Language Transfer if anyone wants a podcast to learn a language instead/as well as. It's free and the Spanish one is excellent

Amen - Hands down on of the best language course out there. The Swahili course is excellent as well

I use Mondly which is now owned by Pearson. I use it in combination with the free version of Duo Lingo and find both together effective as they're very different.

Mondly offers a free daily lesson or full lifetime access for €90 + 32% topcashback. I bought the lifetime access a few years ago as it includes a kids version which I use for my kids:

Thank you for this. I've just signed up for the lifetime subscription to Mondly via Turkey using a VPN.

It has worked out as costing £42.69 for the lifetime subscription.

What does premium give you over the free version?

Removes ads which you usually get every few lessons.
Unlimited 'hearts' which are like lives you lose if you make a mistake (normally you have 5 and they replenish slowly)
More insights into your progress/mistakes you make and personalised lessons.
    Think that's basically it

Same offer on mine. Thanks op.

If you’re not bothered about the ‘social’ side of it - leagues with strangers, giving high fives to your contacts etc, just create yourself a shortcut to the desktop version on your phone. I could put up with the ads until they changed the UI to the new ‘path’ based one. When that happened I found I was losing hearts too often, and no longer had the option to go back and ‘repair’ previously learned sections to earn extra hearts.
The desktop version has no ads, and unlimited hearts. I still hate the new UI, but this at least makes it less frustrating, and means I can just concentrate on learning the language for 5/10 mins a day with no interruptions.

    Agree.
Also the desktop/webpage version uses an older in app currency (lingot) and it was pretty cheap to complete a lesson to the purple level.

I don't like the app's linear path they added recently.
  11. Natt_42's avatar
After the most recent update there's no chance I'm gonna give them a penny. They botched a really good app.
    Linzi_Harding's avatar
Completely agree. I had a 1000 day streak and just let it lapse. I would have bought the duolingo plus at this price if it hadn't updated

    £3.99x12 is only £47.88

    Maybe they should've said £3.99916 a month

Can anyone see a discounted family plan option? I presume this is just the regular single user plan?
    iamw0man's avatar
reddit.com/r/d…ily might help if you're looking to buy and sell spare spots.

Duolingo for school is free and anybody can create a classroom, other than the leaderboard with strangers what is the advantage in paying for this? (edited)

Great little app and has recently been improved, great for reading and writing, but you'll need to practice for conversations.

It's become a bit of a family competition. So really don't mind spending money on it. Worth trying the free version first.
    cossy3's avatar
What does the paid version offer over the free?
  16. minxx's avatar
I got this offer and wondering whether to join. Great for reading/writing and listening but speaking is slightly harder. Currently on a 487 day streak for Spanish 😁
    Tenex's avatar
I'm on 477 for Spanish, just started on a whim...
  17. layzee's avatar
I have just quit a 500 day French streak. I only paid for premium for offline access which they removed without telling customers. Also the new path update is dire. I would urge hukd'ers to try the competition like Memrise.
    Tenex's avatar
Do you mean the new layout? I agree it’s dire and does little but induce RSI with the increase in scrolling.

Babbel shows for me as being the same price for 12 months (Well actually 5p cheaper - £47.94).

Would you pick Babbel or Duolingo?
    Char_Tokai's avatar
Different Duolingo courses (languages) have different strengths and weaknesses. Spanish (Mexican) and French (Metropolitan) are made in-house and have a lot of content. Japanese and Latin still retain mostly volunteer made content, but are very high quality. I don't like how childish the UI, characters and voices have become, but it so far hasn't affected the core content. Also, you can always try the free version.

There are free options to duo lingo if you are on android...

    Which would you recommend?

If more than one person then cheaper to go for family plan:

Up to SIX users get a Super account and maybe you could even get all to pay £15 for the year.
