Been waiting for these to come back in stock after missing out the first time.

Cheapest way to get a steam deck from Valve, perfect for upgrading the storage as long as you're willing to open it up and do a bit of tinkering.

Each Certified Refurbished Steam Deck has been thoroughly tested to the same high standards as our retail units. Every device goes through a complete factory reset, software update, and an extensive examination involving over 100 tests at one of Valve's facilities. Among the tests are all controller inputs, the audio system, the screen, and internals. Battery health is also assessed to ensure proper functionality and longevity.

All refurbished units meet or even exceed the performance standards of new retail units. Although they may have minor cosmetic blemishes, they provide a reliable, high-quality gaming experience at a lower cost.

My collected links, from an earlier thread:
The Steam Deck is a 7-inch handheld that runs games from Steam (and other PC games), similar to a Nintendo Switch (review). Generally it requires internet access to download games at first, but those games are often playable offline.

Buy the 64GB version and 'for now' try it with a 256GB/512GB/1TB micro sd card (and upgrade the internal drive 'at some point'). CeX sell secondhand 2230 NVME drives (256GB from around £18 delivered).

Search Steam for games "Verified" or "Playable" on the Steam Deck or browse those "Great on Deck"
Check the compatibility of games in your library (in client, visit Steam Deck page, follow link titled "Check your library's compatibility").
ProtonDB lists games sorted by user score and those Verified for Steam Deck sorted by user score

Install EA Play / Epic Games and GOG (Heroic Launcher) / Itch.io launchers
Play emulated games on it (pcgamer.com/ste…on/ or EmuDeck)
Play Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming games (list) on it (saves battery vs running Windows), also Xbox Remote Play.
    Play PS5/PS4 games remotely
Add Chrome shortcuts for Disney Plus, Netflix, Spotify etc.

VibrantDeck (for brighter images, pretend you have OLED) with Decky Loader.
CryoUtilities 2.0 for better game performance

Battery life guides (turn down frame rate etc., e.g. optimise the demanding God of War from 1.5hr to 2.5hr. Less demanding 2D/strategy/streaming games last 5/6hrs. Buy a battery pack?

Can you pay for a new or refurb steamdeck with a combo of steam wallet credit and then pay the rest with debit card?

    Yes you can

Sold mine found it to fiddly messing around changing controls for every game nearly, not a pick up and play device unless its steam games if you want it for emulation be prepared to tinker to get games working,i just couldn't be bothered more trouble than it’s worth, just my opinion.great device and price heat from me. Not sure if you're aware but there are community control presets for each game. Played a tonne of games and don't think I've ever spent longer than 10 seconds doing anything controls related.
Emulation takes about 10 mins to set up and it's sorted forever pretty much. I'm not that technology proficient but it seemed extremely intuitive to me

Great price indeed! Grab a 512Gb SD card and you’re golden. Absolutely fantastic system.

Great price, the 64GB does fill up rather rapidly though even if you are installing games to micro-SD a load of stuff like the texture caches and proton ends up on the internal SSD.

Most games seem to run fine off the MicroSD though providing you've used a decent SD card.
    be_vigilant's avatar
I run new world MMO off an SD in the deck. It does take a while to install but once on its great. I keep getting tempted to get a 1 or 2tb drive for inside. But then remind myself the SD works fine.

Got one a 64gb the last sale. Slapped a 1Tb SSD for new games and a 256gb MSD in it for emu.
The performance on triple A games is so much better than I thought it would be. Running Cyberpunk at a steady 60fps on a mix between medium and low settings. It looks great. Not that much noticeably different from playing High/ultra settings on my desktop on the small screen.
Also running FIFA 23, Switch games, BOTW Wii U, GTAV.
Epic, EA, Ubi, GOG stores all working natively along with Gamepass cloud streaming.

How are you running fifa 23?

I got a refurbished 64gb last time around a month ago & honestly it's basically brand new, looked like it had never been used. Slapped a 1tb SSD into it, running great. Also comes with official case & charger & packaging (only difference is it says "refurbished" on the cardboard). Hot Hot Hot 🔥
    InfoAddict's avatar
Yep, getting one of these and slapping in a massive SSD is the smartest way to go.

I overpaid by £241 for the 512gb model back when my place in the queue hadn't come yet and I had a 3 week holiday approaching.

Having been a gamer who has had decent pc builds then moved to console gaming and currently has a Xbox series x and switch, I really didn’t think I’d love this device as much as I do - honestly it’s rekindled my love of gaming and reminded me that I also love tinkering with settings and features. I got a 64gig deck, added a 512 ssd , added win 11 and office to a sd card, barocera is a separate sd card and it’s been superb. Xbox, Sony, pc gaming in a portable format - even cyberpunk 2.0 is running great - don’t let specs alone dictate your view of this device

Just ordered. I had the Asus Ally, went through 4 faulty ones (SD Card failures).

I really missed my Steam deck, its reliable plain and simple. Also over 1/2 the price helps.

Thanks OP, finally bit the bullet after missing out last time

Aw just bought the new one last week, wish I'd waited a bit. 64gb is useless but upgrading is so cheap so ordered a 1tb nvme from China just hope it's genuine.

Will the steam deck run resi 4 remake in 60fps?
    MRVISH's avatar
more like 30 fps, if you configure it well it will do 40 fps which is more than enough. (edited)

Would have waited had I known for this but the sale was too good to miss and I’ve been blown away with what I’ve been able to do on it in such a little time. I’ve also barley even used a quarter of my sd card and have most of my retro game collection.
  30. andmiranda's avatar
Glad I got my brand new 64 in the sale - had been waiting for this until sale made new good value - heat - steam deck is awesome and loading ‘ running from external SSD very fast - Xbox cloud gaming noticed having to wait ages to play games so streaming no good for pickup and play
  31. Scrooge_McDuck's avatar
I don't know much about these things. I am looking for a portable device to play retro games...mainly 8-bit and 16-bit...C64, NES, SNES, GB. Wouldn't mind it playing some PS1, N64 or Sega Saturn too.

Is this what I need or has anyone got recommendations?
    adamtattonreid's avatar
This'll do all that and more, currently playing Zelda from the switch on mine.

What's everyone thinking regards price drops on the Ally and SD on Black Friday, as with the Legion as good as it is you think they'd drop to take the attention away?
    adamtattonreid's avatar
I don't think Steam will bother with a huge Black Friday sale on the deck - just the usual 10/15/20% off - they are still selling too well.
As for the ROG, more likely as they have a number of sellers who could fight for competition

51072757-dyAkQ.jpgSteam support is just horrible and they use Parcelfarce which is pure evil. I have waited what seems like an eon for my steam deck delivery and its one lie after another, first, they make up some serial code not scannable, then can't find my address, then master invisibility so my Arlo AI security cams don't capture them apparently delivering and I wasn't in when I work from home as were my mrs and two grown-up brats. To compound it Steam support uses the chocolate teapot model of customer support. We can't help until at least 10 business days our "systems" can't handle it...

Buy an Asus Rog Ally instead or even a Nintendo Switch cos at least they use relatively reliable delivery companies and actually chase them up when they don't deliver. Steam support is just having a laugh.
