Noticed Air China have followed suit with their Tokyo offer, and increased the date period up to May to Osaka. lights include a whopping (2*23 check-in allowance) - you do a stop-over in Shanghai! Good for cherry blossom.

Osaka is a large port city and commercial center on the Japanese island of Honshu. It's known for its modern architecture, nightlife and hearty street food. The 16th-century shogunate Osaka Castle, which has undergone several restorations, is its main historical landmark. It's surrounded by a moat and park with plum, peach and cherry-blossom trees. Sumiyoshi-taisha is among Japan’s oldest Shinto shrines. ― Google

I am hoping to go to Japan again this spring and have been looking at flying with Air China, mainly because they are the cheapest. Has anyone flown with them?, and how did they find their service. Thanks

The airline is fine as others have said. The food was okay, service was nice overall nothing fancy but the biggest annoyance is the changeover. I've changed over in Beijing a few times and the number of queues you have to join is crazy, they snake over large concourses and over different floors.

The staff are rude, just crazy rude - on my last visit I took a couple of minutes to put my hand luggage through the scanners (which you have to do even if changing over) and security didn't appreciate this so slapped all my stuff and documents out of my hands on to the floor! Ever since then I have avoided any flights that change over in China.

China is an amazing country as well and would recommend you use the free transit visa to also visit Shanghai. For concerns around VPN and internet, just get a Nomad eSIM, these will also work for when you are in Japan as well to access internet and within China, you can access all sites with no issues. Just came back from a trip to China in Nov/Dec and had no issues whatsoever.

China is a completely cashless society and your credit cards won't work. Everywhere is WeChat or Alipay, however if you download Alipay, you can use your cards through Alipay. So anyone planning to transit in Shanghai should be totally fine to travel around and buy stuff/commute around - just scan QR code through Alipay. (edited)

    Thanks, good tip.

I've never used an eSim before, let alone abroad, what sort of cost should I be looking at? I see on Nomad it is around £22 for 15gb of data, is that the norm?

Alternatively, can I just get a Japanese eSim and would that work on my device?

Strongly advise against a stopover in Shanghai. Pain to get into town, pain to clear customs, not much to do and see IMO and internet is blocked whilst you are in China.

Lol, not much to do in one of the world's largest cities?

I do agree that it is a pain to get from PVG into the centre. But you can get the maglev for an experience.

VPN is restricted to Astrill or LetsVPN usually.

However I built my own so I use that. Also shadowsocks works fine.

If you use a tourist eSim then most stuff is available anyway without a VPN.

For those who want another Airline, Etihad currently have a few deals around £600 ish in Jan/Feb which is decent given the current high fares to Japan (good sign is that it's dropping) (edited)

Going next week to Osaka on same deal posted in December I think… happy to take any questions. We decided to stop over 3 days in Shanghai as well with same price. Book using multi city on Skyscanner!

Osaka is great, recommend going dontonbori a few times on your visit for just the food alone! Also not too far from Kyoto or Nara if you have a JR pass which id also recommend checking out if you get a chance

Google maps doesn’t work on your stop over because gets this…. It’s illegal to make maps of China
    LewsTherin's avatar
Only for Google Maps. If you use Gaode (which is the Chinese equivalent and what locals use), then you won't have any issues. But yes, if you look at the overlay of Google satellite vs the mapped roads, they never align because China tweaked all the numbers. Plus Google Maps is so dated now for China as most of that data is pre-pandemic so restaurants, places are no longer accurate. Additionally, not sure why all metro stations in China are marked as temporarily closed on Google lol...

Do you need visa for transit through China?
    LewsTherin's avatar
Nope, free 144 hours landing transit visa. If you are travelling with a Dutch, German, French, Spanish or Italian passport, you don't even need a transit visa as you get a 15 days landing visa.

Worth making it 1-2 nights in Shanghai each way and paying 200 more for a non Chinese airline for the long flight. Q in the transit visa line while filling in the paperwork as it can quickly build up and leave you with 2 hours to get through the terribly inefficient visa desk but if you have print outs of hotels and onward flights out of china, usually 5-10 mins wait once at the desk, but many don't. Buy an Asian esim for both China and Japan in advance, usually registered in Singapore so you have the free internet without VPN or handing over personal details to Chinese database. (edited)

for 200 more you could probably get a direct flight, no?

I just got the first fight to Osaka via Shanghai and I have to say that I'm incredibly impressed with Air China! Amazing service (we are traveling with 5 month old baby) and overall very pleasant, not tight, all you can drink on board and not very busy flight (edited)

Air China? Not even if they paid me to fly, no thanks.

No worse than British Airways, in all honesty.

Annoying to see for me! Just paid around £730 about 3 months ago for end of May!

If it makes you feel better, my mum just paid 1800 to visit my brother in April.

I did this two years ago, took 5 days to see Beijing and 17 days to visit Japan. Great holiday and a reasonable airline, they really looked after the kids. (edited)

I stayed in Osaka before. Great place, friendly people. Lots of attractions from the bigger ones like Osaka castle to smaller ones like the ramen museum. Denden Town is good for the anime fans/gamers.

Short train ride to Kyoto with the shrines. Nara for the deer. Lots of other small attractions nearby too.
