Wow good student laptop and also the moaners about 8gb this has a HUGE 16gb
    plewis00's avatar
But evidently a bad panel and flimsy chassis which are the compromises.

One thing to pay attention to - the Amazon page has a £599 i7 variant with an 11th rather than the 12th gen CPU in the on offer machines as well as 8 rather than 16 GB of RAM.

The i7 does offer a memory slot supporting up to an 8 GB DIMM for a total of 12, although to use it you'd be discarding the installed 4GB.

I would very much expect the 12th gen i5 to significantly outperform the 11th gen i7, and 16 GB pretty much has to be better than 8 GB. Don't be tempted to "upgrade".

Sounds like it's got a horrible tn screen with 250 nit peak brightness. Some reviews state it only goes up to 220 nits
    plewis00's avatar
Was trying to find that out and suspected might be the case on the IdeaPad 3 as they often have TN panels. At this price level, there have been much better displays from other systems (Dell Inspiron and HP Pavilions from memory), the IdeaPad 5 used to be this price too from Lenovo Direct.

Also mentions WUXGA panels but they seem to be 16:9 so wouldn’t trust the description - most of the 16:10 panels seem to be IPS. (edited)

This looks like a great spec for the money, with the screen the only trade off. Voted hot.Tempted but would happily spend a bit more for a similar spec with a better screen- any recommendations?
    plewis00's avatar
The screen is a massive trade-off at £400, look for similar Dell Inspiron and HP Pavilions on offer as they often have at least average IPS panels.

Yeah I'd think both are best avoided. Both have TN screens, with a claimed 250nits of brightness from Lenovo.

Worth noting from the full specs linked below that the RAM is soldered to the board on both.

    * 15 inch model listed as 83ER002NUK Full spec: psref.lenovo.com/Det…NUK

    Display = 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) TN 250nits Anti-glare

    * 14 inch model listed as 83EQ002BUK Full spec: psref.lenovo.com/Det…BUK

    Display = 14" FHD (1920x1080) TN 250nits Anti-glare (edited)

A few of us mentioned this the other day and it was brushed off as nothing and 'misrepresentation' which is an opinion but not one I agree with when spending £400 on a laptop, suggested one of the recent HP Pavilion or Dell Inspiron deals as an alternative (also ASUS Vivobook 16X and Acer Aspire 5). Soldered RAM is less of an issue as it's at least 16GB though.

Hi all advice please - I have a Lenovo laptop AMD Ryzen 7 4800U with Radeon Graphics 1.80 GHz16.0 GB (15.4 GB usable), which I managed to break the hinge on (a real pain). How would this laptop compare/ Thank you for your thoughts.
    morgie's avatar
Can you share the part number for your laptop? It'll be on the bottom near the serial and in a similar format to the example I gave with the full specs for the two in this deal, e.g. '83ER002NUK' for the 15.6 inch model. (edited)

I would highly recommend this model for anyone looking for a powerhouse of a computer at a bargain prices. Grab before they are gone, which is inevitable
  8. arsenalbates's avatar
These are nice laptops. Even the screen isn’t too bad either compared to IPS. John Lewis had these for £379 on Black Friday so this is the next best price I have seen.
  9. akumabozo's avatar
It's not a bad laptop for "Day to Day" Needs... Just don't get why 14" originally was more expensive than the 15"...lol
  10. TheAceofSpades's avatar
The Ideapad 15" with the i3-N305 processor is also worth mentioning as £299 is good if you don't mind settling for 8GB RAM.
    majorwedgy666's avatar
That's a massive downgrade on this machine, it easily justified the 100 premium
  11. NitPolice's avatar
Completely different. That Currys model has an oled screen but only has 8gb ram
  12. Benny5's avatar
Anyone see any merit in checking CEX for laptops.

    Saw a Dell Latitude 5510 i5 10310u 14” 32/512. (A551098C/UK)whatever that means. £300.

Can’t see much else to go on, don’t know what to expectbattery wise or if their 24 months warranty sill applies.
    Daniel789's avatar
    No that's no good
  13. Neil_Galvin's avatar
Not sure if anyone would know, but would this play football manager comfortably, im after a laptop just for that so i don't have to sit at the pc to play it (edited)
    plewis00's avatar
Yes, more than ample, would be no problem for this machine at all.
  14. ZiggyLK's avatar
I don’t know if any body knows but will this run unreal search engine or unity
    plewis00's avatar
Probably but you don't have a discrete GPU so you might find it limited, there is the onboard graphics but they are around half the performance of an Intel Iris Xe chipset.

What do people recommend - a refurbished ThinkPad under £200, or a brand new IdeaPad at £400?

I personally would go for the former, but was interested in knowing what others think.
    Daniel789's avatar
Would depend on the machine, what specs does the ThinkPad have?

I'm after a laptop which would run virtual dj and steam and record in obs without running slow my old think pad couldn't handle it cpu 2 much sometimes over heated also after running the new train sim game
    Iamlegend1981's avatar
If you are going to run stems you need a beast of a laptop. Especially with streaming aswell. You'll need a dedicated graphics. (edited)
  18. DWooBox13's avatar
Anyone know if this would be any good at video/picture work? (Photoshop and rending out in After Effects) and Blender?
  19. Siilver's avatar
why is there no pay in three for this. well for me there isnt (edited)
  20. stu65's avatar
No label on the bottom of the laptop - Device ID states - 844C3CCF-3C37-XXXX-XXXX-710379DC6531 does this help?
    morgie's avatar
No sorry - if you have the box still it'll be on the label on the side.
  21. stu65's avatar
    I have now found this - System SKU LENOVO_MT_81YQ_BU_idea_FM_IdeaPad 5 15ARE05
    stu65's avatar
LENOVO IdeaPad 5 15ARE05 based on a conversation with Lenovo is the right name for the pc with the AMD Ryzen 7 4800U with Radeon Graphics 1.80 GHz and 16.0 GB RAM no SSD. Thanks for the advice
