id mobile is better for roaming. 30GB max vs 12GB on Smarty. Same network (three).

I was with smarty for 1 day. Left same day. Terrible service, no internet. I don't think I've ever been with such a horrible network. Stay with what works !

    COLD. (edited)

Yes I've had data service problems with Smarty for a while now and for the past few days they've removed the option to tether to the laptop. I travel all over so it's not a isolated problem

52206014-c47Kf.jpgWow thanks a lot, after going on chat they changed my plan no issues. I got an extra 34GB for the same price I was paying.

Very brave posting a 3 deal at the moment! 👀

Well, it's a monthly contract. One can always cut and run if connectivity is iffy for you (edited)

I’m paying £8 for 25GB (reduced to 75p a month after cashback) on a 12 month contract directly with Three so this is a great deal if you use a lot of data and don’t want to tie yourself in on a contract. Like all networks coverage/speeds are dependant on your area. Where I live (City in North Wales) it is the fastest network (tried all 4). Also the only network to have 5G in my area. Be aware Three have had a service outage (power failure at their data centre) the last few days (luckily I wasn’t affected) so if you recently got a SIM you may have had issues. At least with this deal you can test it and if it’s poor in your area then just leave after a month. (edited)

Nice! Is that a recent cashback deal afn?
  9. very452001's avatar
Okay these Important Questions require answering:

    - Is it possible for a MVNO Mobile network to offer better signal/coverage/speeds in compared to its parent Main mobile network. For example GiffGaff runs off the o2 mobile network, so will a giffgaff sim be better than a o2 sim in the exact same location with both of these sims in the exact same mobile phone device? Or both perform exactly the same or the main o2 is better because its the main network hence why main networks costs more than MVNO networks? However why main networks on Truspilot reviews get such low scores compared to their MVNO networks

    - ID Mobile Vs Smarty, which network is better with your reasons why and which supports the 2G network and how do these 2 networks reviewed on Trustpilot? Or what the differences between these 2 as they both run on the Three network.

    - To confirm Smarty does not support SMS Shortcodes? So for example with smarty I cant text the word PAC to 65075?

    - Will Vodafone and Three Networks merge later this year?
    KodaBear's avatar
The MVNO will be the same or worse than the main brand. Never better. In the case of giffgaff it is actually worse because it sits on top of the O2 Pay as you go network, not the full pay monthly network. The big thing with this means that you can't use VoLTE (Calling on 4G) so you have to drop to 2G or 3G to make a call still. As it happens, this is actually proving to be more reliable at present but still less than ideal... The reason why giffgaff is better reviewed than O2 is because they don't do annual RPI Price increases, have a great self-service system so you don't need customer service much, and when you need them the agents can be reached online. It's a big difference to how you do things as an O2 customer.

Enough about O2 though. Smarty is a MVNO that's owned by and uses the Three network. You get full access to things like 5G, WiFi calling. VoLTE, even things like free EU Roaming. And just like the above most of it is all self service, with only a small amount of online customer service who you can't call up to speak to.

To answer your other question. Both ID Mobile and Smarty are on the Three network. So neither support 2G Whatsoever as Three never had 2G at all. 3G is now starting to be switched off too. So it will be exclusively for use on 4G and 5G Only if you go with either of these. Out of the 2, I would personally go for Smarty. ID Is owned by Currys/Carphone who don't exactly have the best track record for customer service.

Smarty can text shortcodes. You can absolutely text 65075 for a PAC code. But if you are trying to text a shortcode for other reasons remember that charges apply and because Smarty sits on top of a pay as you go network you'll need to top up with some credit in order to text out if you want to do something like vote on a TV show, enter a competition or whatever.

If Vodafone and Three merge it will be a slow process and I wouldn't expect much to change this year. Nothing is set in stone yet, and there's still a reasonable chance of the deal being blocked if it's judged to negatively affect competition in the industry. It may happen. It may not. But I would not count on it.

Can this be got via Quidco or TCB?
    Doug_'s avatar
TCB's own comparison service for £13 cashback. Alternatively a lower amount from Quidco's comparison service or by going via either site to MoneySuperMarket Mobile.
  11. Meenabeti's avatar
This is only for the first 12 months? Price increase after a year?
    Lloydinio's avatar
You can just switch to the same deal again I believe. I have a few months left in my deal and will ask them to put me on this same deal again
  12. BargainHunta96's avatar
TalkMobile 70GB for £9.95 on a monthly rolling or 80GB for the same price on a 12m contract. No price hike also. They use the Vodafone network. I've been with Three for more than a year, have been put on a rolling contract but I've cancelled and switched to TalkMobile/Vodafone. Was with Voda before and had no issues. The call quality is hit and miss with Three with people struggling to hear me sometimes due to the network. (edited)

If im already on smarty, how can i sign up to this please? Im on 32gb for £8 (via the last 16gb boosted plan over xmas)
    Doug_'s avatar
You could consider the similar plan from iD Mobile, via TCB Compare, and port your number.
  14. omgpleasespamme's avatar
So what network does this MVNO use please?
    JUNR786's avatar
    Three (3)
  15. Ross81's avatar
Could you put this in a mifi and use it as a home broadband connection or is there a better solution for 1 month home broadband?
    KodaBear's avatar
You can indeed. But 50GB isn’t likely to get you very far on a home broadband connection. Most people need 500GB+ Especially if they game or stream a lot. It’s generally best to go for unlimited data and not worry.

Three will do you unlimited 5G home broadband for £25 a month on a 30 day rolling plan and that comes with the use of a proper 5G router for much better performance than a MiFi device.

With the well publicised issues with Three in the last couple of days, I’d avoid anything to do with them. Was with Three for years, nothing but trouble and appalling customer service
    EdUnit's avatar
I was with.Three for about 10 years on the £20/month unlimited data plan. The contract said I would not be affected by annual price rises which was the case until last April. When I questioned it they just claimed everyone's contact was voided and restarted. I wasn't aware. I started on Lebara this week for £7.99 a month. Three never even attempted to keep my business
  17. Kaffehund's avatar
There have also been reports of the outages affecting some people using smaller providers which use Three's network, as there have been 800 reports from customers of one such firm - Smarty - according to Downdetector.

5 days of network problems, zero reply from customer service on any level. It's like this every other month.

Yeah, I’m paying for my wife’s on this and thinking of jumping ship now.  Getting a little silly

I switched my all Family to Smarty last November. £7.20 for 50GB
  20. Doug_'s avatar
iD Mobile also offer 50 Gb for £8. They give rollover but no introductory discount. (edited)

How do I get this if I’m already in smarty
    niceal1's avatar
Go online chat and ask to put onto this plan. Online chat may be bit busy with the network issue this weekend
  22. James_Londoner's avatar
I signed up to this deal last April via MSE - recently had a message from Smarty extending the price for another year
  23. andros1963's avatar
For me they had a glitch for 30 mins on Friday and 5 mins today. Best network I’ve been with if you don’t like them leave it’s quite simple. But this is a great deal
    hdeals3's avatar
Three had a few issues in the past week. Smarty is owned by and uses Three's network, so that's why you've experienced those "glitches".
  24. dooodle's avatar
You cannot reply to shortcodes with smarty be warned. Got my card blocked twice cause couldn't reply to bank
    JUNR786's avatar
I've don't think I've ever had to reply to a short code, in what situation do you have to?
  25. Goldfish20's avatar
If you are already on Smarty really easy to switch using the help chat. Used this last month to move my 40GB deal to 70GB, think I may switch back down to this one.
    Crazy-Climber's avatar
One issue I had was I have a group deal and they say if you move to this from that you lose the 10% on the group discount - but I can live with that as its still for me £4 cheaper (3 in the group)

Heat added OP saves me £24/yr compared to my current Voxi plan. Purchased and willing to give Smarty another go

I have the Voxi unlimited everything £10 but I'm highly unlikely to hit 50gb and I miss free roaming
    squiby's avatar
Thinking to drop down to this from the £12 125gb plan, in the 3 months ive had it i used maximum 3gb a month. Already got cashback from Quidco so will save £48 over the year.
  28. very452001's avatar
Can anyone confirm is it 50gb or 16GB (50gb only for the first few months only)?

Also what about the 3 months introductory discount shown above?
  29. Sjsjzwzebxxbn_Uajqzszdbx's avatar
Just tried it for 4 days and had outages every day no network crap 5g than 3g? Is this a three network problem?
    hdeals3's avatar
Yes, Three has been having issues for a few days now.

Vodafone also had issues yesterday... Both networks want to merge, so I don't know if it's related or not.

The network itself depends a lot on the area. Three is very good in some areas with their 1500Mbps crazy speeds, but shocking in others.
  30. Thislife79's avatar
Three download speeds in my areas in the low single digits unfortunately👎Lebara/Vodafone 80-150 though was much faster when roaming abroad 🤦🤦

Beware. Coverage in central London is absolutely atrocious
    omgpleasespamme's avatar
    Whose network do they use?
  32. grinnaslee's avatar
I switched to smarty from Plusnet (EE) and download speed dropped from 60 gbps to 3 gbps with smarty. Poor indoor reception too.
Going to switch again to Talkmobile
    hdeals3's avatar
    *Mbps.

In case nothing else works as well as plusnet, there's 1pmobile and Spusu on EE.

Any existing customer been successful in getting smarty to switch to this plan? I had an existing SIM which I was using for testing back in December - but CS keep telling me "it's for new customers only".

Seems pretty crazy they would prefer me to order a new SIM, post it and sign as a new customer rather than honour this deal.
    Deal_Er's avatar
You can always create an account using a different email id.
And yes, unfortuntely, they offer these prices only to new customers, so you will have to order a new sim from them anyway.

How much is the add on for roaming in America? It won’t let me see it without having an account

Heat from me. Just changed plan to this from £10pm 50gb. Saving £24 a year
    Goldfish20's avatar

When i go shopping at my local tesco extra in Peterborough, the internet is unusable with smarty ( three network )

Even on the O2 network it's rubbish in the Hampton area

Been on this exact package for about a year now. It has been great, definitely been a bit patchy lately maybe more people using it. Also haven't had a single 5g connection despite living in 5g area, passed directly underneath a 5g tower today and still no 5g on Pixel 5. Bit odd!
  38. SpeedyDoc_DOCARMY's avatar
Not bad but I managed to downgrade my plan as I'm not using much data anymore for 5p less.
  39. sibeer's avatar
Great price for a high use contract on 1 month rolling. Three are generally fine by me, not quite as good coverage as o2 but generally faster when it does work. Yesterday though
    Brabus_Duddy's avatar
I had tons of issues either o2 over 18 months I was with them. Sooo happy when I left them for 1p mobile.
  40. Salmam's avatar
Coverage in Manchester is awful. Never get 5g and it's so patchy.
