Hi folk!

I was looking for a platform upgrade for my ageing TrueNAS server and stumbled upon this Ryzen 5 2600X.

I know this is not the newest CPU but it still has plenty of power and could do great in someone's budget gaming, streaming, or server rig.

It comes with 3-year warranty and a semi-decent cooler.

Considering the power/price ratio, I think this is a pretty sweet deal that won't break the bank.

The downside:
I can only see one, if you plan to use it for a server/streamer it does not have APU so you will need additional GPU.

The AMD Ryzen 5 2600X 6-core processor belongs to AMD's second generation of processors based on the "Zen" architecture.

The Ryzen 2000 series "Zen+"processors build on the successful foundations laid by the first generation of "Zen" microarchitecture. Going by the codename of Pinnacle Ridge, the Texas-based chip manufacturer is ready to impress businesses and consumers with a second wave of newly optimised high-end processors.

Although still utilising the AM4 platform, the new processors stand ready to bring some serious competition into the field of play by means of higher clock frequencies, an improved boost function, as well as advanced overclocking technology in the form of XFR2.

The AMD Ryzen 5 2600X is a "Pinnacle Ridge"-gen processor offering six physical CPU cores which, thanks to Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), are capable of processing two threads simultaneously.

This results in a doubling of the virtual core count to make for 12 in total. The hexa-core model functions with a clock frequency of 3.6 GHz per core which, thanks to Precision Boost 2, can change in real time to match the use case scenario - irrespective of whether this is in games or applications. These adjustments are made in precise on-the-fly increments while remaining within the TDP up to a Turbo frequency of 4.25 GHz.

The TDP sits at just 95 Watts which, in comparison to other 6-core processors from AMD, is extremely conservative - especially when taking into account the increased clock frequencies of the AMD Ryzen 5 2600X. Manufactured using the new, advanced 12 nm FLP manufacturing process, the processor comes with a total of 3 MB Level 2 Cache and 16 MB Level 3 Cache which are then combined together to form a "Smart Prefetch Cache".

The CPU offers 20 PCIe 3.0 lanes, four of which are reserved for the connection to the motherboard chipset and for operating NVMe SSDs. As a result 16 lanes remain for communicating with graphics cards which, in either x16 or x8+x8 modes, support NVIDIA's SLI technology for multiple graphics cards. In terms of memory, DDR4-RAM modules rated for operation at 2933 MHz are supported, meaning that even higher clock frequencies can be achieved via overclocking.

Features

  • 6 "Zen"-cores rated at a mere 95 Watt Thermal Design Power (TDP)
  • 12 Threads thanks to Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT)
  • Very high Single- and Multi-Thread performance
  • Base Clock of 3.6 GHz & 4.25 GHz Turbo with Precision Boost 2
  • Includes XFR2 automatic overclocking function
  • Unlocked multiplier for manual overclocking (unlocked CPU)
  • Large Unified Cache Memory: 3 MB L2 & 16 MB L3
  • High-efficiency, non-planar 12 Nanometer LPtransistors
  • AVX2 Instruction Set Extensions for complex vector calculations
  • Two AES units for fast, reliable data encryption
  • Modern AM4 platform with extensive range of features
  • Supports DDR4-RAM rated at a guaranteed 2933 MHz (Dual-Channel)
  • Includes AMD Wraith Spire CPU cooler

Decent, though a shame it's not supported by W11. These chips can still pack a punch for a budget system and would fare a lot better than those budget intel chips that are supported. Looks like they're clearing out inventory, £48 for the CPU, cooler and 3 years warranty is pretty good. Heat

Good deal - especially if doing a budget AM4 build, this will get you going and be fine for low-mid tier gaming with tons of expansion options later on thanks to the same AM4 platform. I did find my 2700 feeling sluggish a year or two ago with 3000 and 5000 series appearing noticeably more snappy and responsive. Mentioned briefly before but these have fussy IMCs especially at high clockspeeds and don't appear to like Corsair Vengeance LPX at stock timings (underclock usually sorts it out).

Good deal at £52, but then I compared to the 4500 (same 6 cores but 65W) and that's only £62 (AMWH) so I feel I'd go for that instead.

Do newer 500-series boards still support Zen+? I recall a couple years back the feature matrix for them still only quoted Ryzen 3000 onwards, and it's be a shame if you bought this for a starter + upgrade path but had to scrape up some rickety third hand b350m to do so. If not, I'd probably concur with Roger above - nice to see them being cleared out, but pretty much obsoleted by the 4500. (edited)

you need B350/450 for the 2600x.

B450 is not a bad board to have, support a lot of CPUs! 1000-5000 (edited)

They have the 3700x for £90 which will be far better value for money - 8 cores, 65w tdp and it runs on the 7nm architecture so it will be far more efficient than the 2600x, better buy that instead.

PS - WILL WORK ON A320 (not sure why someone would put it on one buts its an option), B450 and X370 and X470 boards
will obviously work with B550 and X570 aswell.

Why is there ALWAYS someone in these comments saying "it's better to pay twice for something else"

Of course it's better, but if that were an option, they'd already be doing that. For some it isn't an option, so they'll be going with this instead.

Where are those budget am4 motherboards though? I remember buying some Gigabyte A320 mobos for £20 each a while back!!
