Update 2
Updated, removed a couple of out of date info, added a new offer
Hi

I thought I'd create a deal with some of the best social tariffs available (Broadband Social Tariffs Are For People On Universal Credit And certain legacy benefits), possibly the right time to do this.
Not all social tariffs are made equal, so this is the pick of the best, that can't be beaten by signing up to a "normal" broadband deal.

New info From Virgin Media
Virgin Media UK Make it Easier to Take Social Broadband Tariff

The new system simplifies the process by removing the need for customers to prove their entitlement to broadband providers (e.g. sending screenshots of their Universal Credit account or providing a letter from the Jobcentre), which can occur as regularly as every month. Some ISPs, such as Sky Broadband, have already implemented this and now Virgin Media have done the same.

Full list following this link, or selected picks below

Have added a couple of 4G / 5G deals at the bottom if the below broadband offerings aren't for you

Bear in mind that Vodafone advertise this, but it seems that they never actually let anyone have it .... the only way to go about it is to fill in a form online then wait for them to call you. They don't. You ring, chat, message, but they say no-one can help with this as you have to wait for them to call you .... I have now filled in the form once a month since December and still waiting.
    KodaBear's avatar
After you have registered your details on the form, wait at least 24 hours then call the essentials broadband team on 01482 293823. That line will get you directly through to one of the two call centres that are dedicated to this service only.

Snail broadband for the poor lol. Probably more expensive when price per mb speed taken into consideration. However the deal is hot. I like it too as you can tell the companies that are trying to support people and those forced into it and offering the minimum. Great post voted hot but companies should just make reductions for those on certain benefits not just force people to the bottom.

ps best thing to do with broadband is share it with neighbours and split the bill. I do hehe (edited)
    crdw's avatar
I disagree, I'm paying less for a faster Mps with BT than I was using before, and also get free phone calls and a new digital phone, not subject to the price increases and £0 cancellation fee if leave before 12 months. Can't go wrong in my opinion if you are eligible. (edited)
  5. Nick_Massey's avatar
I’m an existing virgin customer and they won’t help me I’m paying £75 a month and don’t want tv so they said new deals are for new customer’s not existing

Hi Nick, just seen this post. We were in mid contract with VM, broadband only and 350mb package. Our contract wasn't up until October this year. All we had to do was fill out a quick form online, and then when we had the email through reply with a screenshot of our Universal Credit payment page, that shows the account name and address (so it shows they match your virgin media account info) and it shows you've recently had in the past 30 days a universal credit payment. Then within 24 hours we had been swapped to the Essentials £12.50 social tariff without issue. All I have to do going forward is when the 12 months is up again, provide proof again.

Also, I see you've got some sort of large tv package with them. Obviously that in itself isn't something that comes as "essential". So be prepared to drop that. You can always use a streaming stick and use catchup/subscription services on that instead going forward. It'll still be cheaper than the current prices you'll be paying. Regards, Mat.

I'm on Vodafone £12 a month was garunteed 23mb speed but last week speed been constant 34mb
    Toneluck's avatar
I'm already on Vodafone but am on Universal Credit at the moment. I'll ask to see if they will reduce it, hopefully they will? Also, sounds like worth asking if they can crank my speed up. They turned it up when I first had it, I think it's mid 20s, from memory... (edited)
  7. FantasticFran's avatar
Cheers I've done this with Sky - got a new router on the way too. Also if you have a large family and are on universal credit you may qualify for a capped water bill - I've saved £27 a month signing up to both.
  8. brendanhickey's avatar
Virgin media £20 for 50mb down and 5 up, anytime phone calls and Stream from Virgin Media which is a tv package.. that is a good deal
    KodaBear's avatar
As far as I know there’s no calling package with the Virgin deal. It’s a broadband only connection.

If you want the anytime calls then BT is the answer. £15 for 40Mb down 10 up with 700 mins of calls, or £20 for 80Mb down 20 up and unlimited calls.

As for the TV package it’s basically just Freeview anyways.

    Yas_Min's avatar
Yeah they're crazy prices. Talk about getting kicked while you're down.

I would imagine they're still taking in some government money with these kind of "incentives" (edited)

Looking for similar deals but for a student living in a one-bed studio (Trying to save!!!). Don't need massive speeds but consistent uptime and ping are my main concerns. Now Broadband at £18 for 12months looking the best option at the moment?
    deleted2850942's avatar
Go mobile data. Don’t encourage a student to be gaming, ping isn’t important right now.
  12. Bluediamond28's avatar
I believe sky superfast is £20 Normally 35 which I have for those on benefits also with this 18 month contract you can cancel anytime with no penalty, apologies if this is already mentioned. (edited)

Have people had success in negotiating a higher speed but going to or being on a social tariff price, particularly with VM?
    deleted449189's avatar
I have the £12 tariff from Vodafone and to date have had zero issues with it. In fact, been in the property 9 years and it’s the first ISP not to give us any grief (touch wood), previously had fibre with Sky, Talk Talk, BT, Plus Net and Sky again..
  14. green422ow's avatar
can anyone explain the BT plan please? It says £15/£20 in OP but £15 when you click through the link? Where is the £20 plan mentioned on the site (edited)

    Great post...
Just wondered if there are any deals that may have tv attached with broadband deals for people on UC etc
    many thanks
    Kaz00ie's avatar
Virgin offer Stream TV included in their £20 deal. It’s a streaming box and you can add on whatever package you want. Kids is £4, Bt Sport £10 etc
  18. Gazebonic's avatar
Not sure if it helps anyone but I noticed the other day my Now Broadband tracked as a payment through airtime rewards.
Must have been through the direct debit which is £23 and had £8.05 knocked off as tracks at 35%. Interested to see if it does it again this month. Hopefully that helps someone else.
    Gazebonic's avatar
read the Ts & Cs but looks like possibly one month only. Still can't knock it if that is the case.
  19. dannyblackbeard's avatar
Looked these up before and they're pretty naff to be honest.

I wait till my deal is about to run out then cancel. Don't answer the phone for a few days. Make them sweat. Then tell retentions you want to stay but it's too expensive. I got mine down to £23 a month for 250meg.

Obviously, everyone is different. But don't be quick to change to these. They're a significant downgrade if you're used to high speeds.
    Crossbow's avatar
Obviously have not tested them all, but can speak from experience of BT's £20/67Mbps offer - no change from what I had previously with Sky's equivalent @ £27 with landline (non social tariff).
In addition, BT's deal included a rather handy digital voice phone with unlimited free calls (to most local & non-premium numbers) & free voicemail - with Sky it was zero free calls & I had to pay £2 per month extra for voicemail.

If it is at least 36Mbps it will be more than adequate for most people, except heavy users or large families with multiple devices connected simultaneously.
Anything below 36Mbps do not even bother, unless you are a very light user with low expectations.

Also may be best to choose one which let's you leave anytime (no penalty charges), so you only lose a month's subs at most if it proves unsuitable for one's needs. (edited)

49743312-hGPW1.jpgMy speeds max out at these speeds on my phone, I should be getting 900mbps

I reckon it's unrealistic to expect a wireless connection to be as good as a wired one or even close.
An interesting article on the possible causes & things to try to improve it - Why Your Wi-Fi is Slower Than Ethernet (Plus Fixes) weakwifisolutions.com/wif…et/

Prior to the above, one thing to definitely try is getting in touch with your ISP & complaining, they might be able to send you a Mesh system for free to improve things.

If you're still not happy, vote with your feet & switch providers the next time you get the chance - an April price rise may let you leave penalty-free even if you're still in contract, more info here which.co.uk/con…6P8 (edited)
  21. shubyz's avatar
Does anyone know which of these are monthly rolling contracts. I can’t afford to get bogged down into a long contract. Would like to have the option to leave without penalty. Thanks
    KodaBear's avatar
All social tariffs will have zero penalty to leave. It's part of the requirements. They are typically 12 month agreements while still being free to leave at any time.
  22. bassi3's avatar
Tried to get this for my brother with Vodafone who is on ESA and has mental health issues, but they did a credit check and refused, offered to pay from my account but they didn’t want to know.
    KodaBear's avatar
Speak to BT. They also have a social tariff and slightly more relaxed checks, as well as a deposit option if he still fails said checks.
  23. perplexedme's avatar
Are people on Tax Credits intentionally excluded?
    xsavingsandgoodiesx's avatar
Potentially as there aren't savings limits which affect eligibility to Tax Credits, unlike the other benefits listed. Tax Credits only considers income in means-testing for eligibility and disregards savings, so in theory a household could have low income but high savings. Although surely there could be other ways to verify that a household in receipt of tax credits could qualify. COncerned at risk of families moving from TC to UC to access things like this, and potentially being worse off on UC than they were on TC

All social tariffs are exempt from the price increase. Not just Sky. It’s a requirement for all providers offering these discounts for financially vulnerable people claiming eligible benefits.
