I've just moved over to the British Gas Electric Driver Sep24 which in my opinion is a good deal at the moment. Most tariffs I've looked at seem to have a higher day rate to offset the cheaper night rate, this one matches the standard variable rate plus the cheaper night rate. As an added bonus, standing charges are a little cheaper too.

Standard Electric
Standing Charge 50.308p
Unit Rate 29.482p Per KWH

Electric Driver Sep24
Standing Charge 45.921p
Day Unit Rate 29.482p Per KWH
Night Unit Rate 9.400p Per KWH

Night rate runs from 00:00 - 05:00

I believe that the energy price cap may fall this autumn and may go back up early next year. This tariff has zero termination fees, so if something better comes along, you're good to go.

I also switch gas over, same rate but slightly lower standing charge from 29.106p to 26.367p per day.

You do need a smart meter for 30 minute readings.
I'm based on the midlands in case its not offered to everyone.
Forgot to mention, its not just EV charging for the night rate, its all electric usage during the hours above.

Hope it helps someone else out.

Thanks for the information from a quick Google search.

Yes I got that from Google. I used that info to help me decide if it was worth switching, so thought I'd add that info to the post.

I think Octopus Intelligent is probably still the better deal, 6 hours per day at 7.5p per kWh and then potentially extra throughout the day for just the EV (depending on charger and car compatibility). I'm just about to move from Agile to Intelligent - both with Octopus.

No arguments from me, Octopus offer some great products. As I'm already with BG, its was a quick switch over for me to get a little better rate.
  3. sm9690's avatar
Intelligent Octopus is 2p cheaper and for 6hrs instead of 5hrs.
    MynameisM's avatar
Factor in a new charger if you don't already have a compatible vehicle or charger and IO isn't worth it, EOn drive is probably better than this at 7 hours 9.5p the 0.1p difference will easily be offest by the 2 extra hours if you add on the overall house consumption for the 2 hours extra
  4. Whitey2048's avatar
The cheaper rate is across the entire household too which will reduce the cost of the phantom load for those 5 hours. Set timers for the washing machine and dishwasher to run during that time too and it's definitely worth it. I'd stop short of getting up at midnight to run the hoover about, but you get my point.

Would you trust running all of these appliances while asleep? I certainly wouldn’t

Ive just moved from BG absolute nightmare customer service , getting bills wrong , trying to sort it out is also a nightmare you can only call between 9-5 mon to friday rest of the time is in a chat box . From jan to may my bills went from £1300 to £60000 fine if you can actually sort it but you cant…….YOU BEEN WARNED
  6. Spare_Foon2's avatar
Bad deal as all these deals require you to have a smart meter installed
    Supergolo's avatar
Whats wrong with smart meter? Do you use a smart phone or a Nokia 3310?
  7. Supergolo's avatar
    two words: Intelligent Octopus
    axum's avatar
All depends on your usage…a bit of an obvious statement I know, but if you’re a low mileage EV owner and are at home during the day, you may find your savings from EV charging are outweighed by the extra you pay during the day. That’s where their tracker fits in perfectly, at least for my usage patterns. (edited)

I think there may well be a typo in the description..... it says
    "Standard Electric
    Standing Charge 50.308p Per KWH
    Unit Rate 29.482p Per KWH"

I'm pretty sure the standing charge is per day..... NOT per KWH. Having said that, this IS British Gas, and given that they constantly make mistakes..... have poor customer service.... and after 12 months and a case with the Ombudsman have still not sorted out my account..... maybe it is actually per kWh lol
  9. saintscouple's avatar
We have an EV but are low millage, only charging her on average once every 2/3 weeks. We have gone for the Octopus tracker tariff as it works out cheaper overall.... we could get cheaper with the agile, but don´t want to be working out cheapest time of day to use electric.
    axum's avatar
This is exactly where I ended up. If you’re not charging that often and you’re wfh a lot, the tracker is perfect as when I do need to charge, just do it at the weekend.

I too couldn’t be bothered timing all the appliances all the time to make use of the overnight tariff

I've finally escaped British Gas, I know my story sounds almost cliche on here, but their customer service has gone from okayish to appalling. I tried to move to this tariff a month back, already a British Gas customer, I was transferred on the phone twice after waiting on hold for nearly an hour and a half to be told "nobody at British Gas could help me", that is verbatim. This line came after I complained as to why they couldn't do the simple thing of moving my tariff. Apparently I was on some new billing system and so had to make the switch online, nobody could do it outside that (can't believe that for a moment), anyway I was livid. To give more context this started as a online chat with them, which previously was able to assist me moving tariff, and that chat was where they told me to ring a number, and that number told me I had the wrong department and transferred me again, so you could say I was transferred 3 times. I lodged a complaint, got £30 credited for my troubles and moved to octopus with a referral and got another £50, so they did my a favor in a way. Go with them at your peril.
    UnluckyForSome's avatar
I had to fight them for 8 months of my life and go through the energy ombudsman to get justice, so you got off lightly!
  11. dkl_uk's avatar
British Gas could have a special tariff just for me, that paid me £10 per day every single day just to use electricity and gas, and I still would not remain a customer of theirs.

My three year tariff ends on August 31st and even if the process of switching from British Gas to any other company involved inserting a cactus into my rectum, I would do it. Twice.
    MynameisM's avatar
Why don't you move already then if you wouldn't take £10 per day why stick till the end of August just pay the nominal exit fee although I don't think you need pay it if it's less than 40 something days till end of contract.

That was my logic, switched me over in 24 hours too.
  14. chrispaps12's avatar
Thanks for the information just switched have some heat.

Its better than the octopus tariff as you can charge any car and all your appliances.
    deleted9453's avatar
How is it better? Octopus is cheaper and for longer.

Great can’t wait for all those noisy washing machines rattling around in the middle of the morning as it will be cheaper to do the washing
    MynameisM's avatar
Lol, can you hear all of them , did you hear mine on last night ,lol
  17. N1Andy's avatar
EON's EV tariff is slightly more expensive, but you get 7 hours at cheap rate (12am to 7am).

    Electricity Standing Charge:47.209p per day
ElectricityDay Unit Rate: 33.787p per KWH
    Electricity Night Unit Rate:9.500pper KWH

Might sound odd, but if you have an EV with a larger battery 5 hours may not be long enough.....likewise, I assume it might be useful if you have a household battery.
    willhay555's avatar
Most people don't let the battery exhaust and have to charge up for over six hours. A top-up each night is the most sensible idea.
  18. Petwal41's avatar
I'm with BG which is fine but its over 6 months since i last got a bill it would be great to get one every month or quarterly to stay in control of my payments i use to get them every 5 months but since i had smart meters installed after over 6 months i still have had no bill produced sent a message to them with no reply
    JRSC01's avatar
that is also my bug bear with BG, no monthly cost instead they bill you in 6 month blocks, it was better when you got to see every month how much you use, and then can keep on top of how much each month is being charged.

I also asked them to go back to monthly bills by DD, but that fell on deaf ears... saying they need to review accounts every 6 months to have a better all rounded adjustment for peak months etc...
  19. sanjaykeswani's avatar
thank you for sharing, we are on British Gas, as you said, no brainer to switch.
  20. landros1's avatar
My last bill (spring) just gone was the highest for 2 years ( I have moved to Octopus now).
    Customer care is absolutely diabolical!
No wonder they made an extra BILLION last year!
  21. Simon_Conroy's avatar
Thanks for this just joined (we are with BG anyway) I have a company ev and charge allot from home as the public chargers are still way more expensive than even the standard rate at home.
  22. Squizzy_Rex's avatar
Just signed up to this thanks!
Won't do a full charge in 5 hours but will keep it topped up.

    Heat!

Hi, I'm tied to British Gas at the moment (Bit of a story) and currently on a Standard Variable Tariff.
Is there any reason not to move to this EV Tariff?
I have an EV and could do washing, dishwasher etc through the night.

    Thanks
    jb66's avatar
There is no downside, there is no exit fee so your free to move back to the British gas standard rate
  26. darrensk's avatar
Thanks for this. Have a EV coming in early October hopefully September to get free wall box offer. Anyhow as noted on here I switched to octopus but was offered 150 to stay with BG (after 90 days) so it might work out well.
    markkeenan's avatar
Where is the free wall box offer from?
  27. landros1's avatar
Last thing they are is "BRITISH"! As mentioned billing (despite having a SMET 2 smart meter) were constantly wrong (on their side). Half price electricity overnight saved me 20p on a clothes wash (no dry).
    newsgroupmonkey's avatar
    So is Octopus.
  28. chaz_187's avatar
so people, Mrs is getting an EV and even though she will use the work chargers sometime you might need to use one at home. We can get a free Pod point installed so now need to go on a tariff like this.

Is Octopus better? And do you also need a smart meter for that aswell??
    vassy4u's avatar
I moved from BG to Octopus. BG has worst service n customer support. Yes you need smart meter.
  29. yesoccifer's avatar
Sure is great those well off enough to have an EV get to charge their cars for dirt cheap, whilst there are people that can't get anywhere near these rates and can't afford to heat their water more than once a week.
    deleted9453's avatar
    Go on Octopus Tracker. Simple.
  30. UnluckyForSome's avatar
I will never go near British Gas ever again the rest of my life. Please don’t do it. Everything is hunkey-dorey until something goes wrong. After that, you’re in for a ride. 8 months of my life I fought them, had to go to the energy ombudsman to be treated fairly. They ruined my credit rating and sent debt collectors to my door despite them owing ME money. Don’t do it! (edited)
    markkeenan's avatar
    This !!
  31. Kets34's avatar
I have just logged in and failed to find this tariff. I'm not given this as an option, any help?
    darrensk's avatar
You have to get a quote oddly I don’t think you can directly switch.
  32. SpamJavelin's avatar
Just switched to Eon Next which offers 7hrs of charging. Would have gone Octopus but would have required a new charger or a new car! Don't understand why they do this?
    chrispaps12's avatar
I don’t understand either, Whats the point of having an EV tariff when you exclude so many electric cars.
  33. jimbo23's avatar
Sure the neighbours are going to love everybody's washing machines and dryers going around and around at 2am in the morning.

Great deal. I am on the standard ev tariff with British gas. 37p/kW peak. I cannot see this tariff when I log in, is this for new customers only does anybody know please?
    helzbelz99's avatar
It wasn't an option on my account when I went through the app but it let me switch over when I went through the website
  36. TheBishDude's avatar
I think you have to prove you have EV which is annoying for someone that simply wants to take advantage of delayed timers etc.
    KentishLad's avatar
I signed up on the 15th, plan started on the 16th. Wasn't asked to prove my EVness. Charged it cheap though, super saving for zero effort - thanks OP
  37. J_Orr's avatar
Octopus cheaper. How is this so hot?
    deleted9453's avatar
I keep asking myself this question everytime someone says they've signed up.
  38. darrensk's avatar
As this is technically a fix to sep 2024 I wonder if they will drop the day rate to match the expected drop in unit rates in October.
    dkl_uk's avatar
Doubtful, and most sites I've looked at actually say this isn't even a good thing to do. My 3 year fixed ends 31/08 and I'm letting myself drop to the Standard because it's basically the cheapest rate available and will drop in October.
  39. techsearchuk's avatar
So the new price cap comes in Sunday. Has anyone looked into whether this ev tarriff is still good value?
    jb66's avatar
    It depends on your circumstances,

I've changed routine and set a delay on my tumble dryer and dishwasher so they come on just after midnight as well as my car.
