According to Crucial's ram upgrade page this should have 2 ram slots, neither of which are soldered and you can go to a max total of 32GB...

My daughter has been using an. 8th gen i5 laptop for years and it’s still been just as fast for her school work, internet and light gaming now as it was a few years back. I’ve only just replaced it because the hinge broke and the base is falling apart.

This is a great deal for anyone who wants a cheap school/college laptop. (edited)

if you want to still use the one with the broken hinge pick up a cheap docking station and you'll likely find a monitor on facebook marketplace, gumtree or the like. Keyboard and mouse for a tenner and you've got a servicable desktop set up.

The most important thing is about the condition “refurb”
No one said what condition they received theirs ?

Bought one of these a few weeks back for my sister when ebay had a 20% code and the only marks were on the bottom of the laptop. The rest of the laptop is in excellent condition.

Laptop is 3 years old according to Dell's website when doing a look-up with the asset code.

Great price for the spec. Lovely to see a proper quad core processor, 16gb ram and an SSD 😁

    is 5400 prone to overheating?

    reddit.com/r/D…et/

    dell.com/com…490

Seems to be an issue with 5300/5400, or perhaps they were just faulty units?
Using throttlestop and turning off TurboBoost may help according to some users. (edited)

I issue the 5400 at work and used one around 2020, and in my experience I have noticed a high rate of issues with the 5400 due to heat, especially with the NVME drive. The ones using the Micron drive seem to be more prone to this issue, but the ones that come with a Samsung drive seem to be more tolerant of the heat

I tried it on my spare laptop, it was very stable and actually decent. Printer drivers and the fact the VW diagnostic software is windows only made me convert it back to windows!

Is backlit optional then? My 5400 has it (8265u) and the quick key is on the keyboard.

Which is the better deal? This one or the 'Dell Latitude 3410 14" FHD/i3-1011OU' which was posted 4 days ago for £199.99?

Reading the details the battery is basically worn out, so kind of defeats them purpose of a laptop and nobody wants a 14" desk top. £60 plus for a new battery and you have to take the laptop to pieces to replace the battery.

They say the same on all of their listings, minimum 2 hour standby. These appear to be ex-corporate laptops and you can get lucky and receive a machine that has spent most of its life connected to a dock. The one I bought from the same seller had excellent battery life with zero signs of use to the keyboard and track pad which makes me think it was always connected to a dock.

Add a flavour of Linux (have you seen what M$ are about to do with Windows 11) and it would be a nice machine

Seems like a nice offer for that price but if you can get 7490, get 7490, it's way better than that series.

Doesn't seem to be much difference spec-wise? Pretty much identical, apart from upgraded chassis.

I have 1 of these, 8gb ram, they're pretty sturdy. Good for everyday use, media, casting films to a Chromecast.
    No good for gaming.

I'd imagine if these are resold from computer recyclers that many of these will have been caned during the pandemic hence the battery life being poor.

We used many of these at our workplace - they will quite comfortably run Windows 11 even 8GB ram as long as you arent doing anything too streneous - as someone said upgraded.

I have one here, and it definitely has a backlit keyboard, so i guess it must be one of those things that you can either have or not have if seller is saying doesn't have.

Thanks. Grabbed one of these for around the house. Hopefully the battery shouldn't be a huge issue because for some things around the house I'll be connecting it to a monitor anyway.

Hmmm whats this like for people who use these laptops, my basic needs are very simple something that isn't hammering the cpu when doing things like watching streams and/or having multiple open at once.

Don't want one to be that heavy or chunky though thats not essential.

And something that can do basic emulation (not PC gaming)

    Good enough?

Was it dated as this Thursday or next though? Although indicated as Parcelforce 24 the dispatch dates look to have been later on this listing
