Software is packed with intrusive ads. If you need to check the live feed immediately, it takes at least a minute to sit through the ads before you can hit the skip button, making these largely useless for checking events happening at any given point. Also, unless I’m on a WiFi network, I find it almost impossible to connect to the cameras, even with perfect phone network reception.
    SquadronLeader's avatar
Totally agree. I'm think of replacing both my outdoor cameras with something different. The number of times I've tried to access the feed but have had to wait and watch adverts instead, pointless! I would definitely avoid.

Yi used to be great till they decided to charge for cloud services, and you keep being reminded to “upgrade”
    DaddyPig's avatar
Just stick a micro sd in the cameras . No need for the cloud .
  3. Gazzalfc's avatar
These are nice cameras. But the software is rubbish. Full of ad's and bloat unless you buy the premium service.
    RichieM313's avatar
Surely they don’t make profit on the hardware but software lol
  4. salamat's avatar
Not sure how it would be affected by having four cams, probably not at all, but one works fine with the app 'TinyCamPro' and you can upload to Google drive etc, for no monthly subscription.

    Supported cams
    Yi Technology
All YI Home, Dome, Outdoor, Cloud cameras (cloud/h264, 1-w audio)" (edited)

2nd this, I've been using it for a while and it's spot on.
I've used it with 6 cameras, you can jig the layout to suit in TinyCam.
  5. ycsb's avatar
Avoid. Cameras are fine but as others have said the software is an advert ridden mess.
  6. Teezgaff's avatar
Would be great if they let you use the multi view without subscription. I use an old android tablet as a monitor but changed my cameras to Tapo so I could see all cameras at once.
    DaddyPig's avatar
I use multi view with out a sub . I just hit my home screen on the app on my comp and all the screens come up .
  7. sharif76's avatar
Can anyone recommend a better one please?
    ycsb's avatar
If u r after an outdoor camera then highly recommend the tapo c510w (Amazon) frequently on sale. Think I paid about £45. Software is great and camera quality is top notch. Just stick in an SD card and off you go. Cloud subscription is optional. Pan and tilt functionality is also really handy.

Really strange disparity in comments. I have four cameras and use YI Home on Android. I have an SD card in each. I don't get any adverts, the app opens immediately and I can switch to a live camera straight away. I get 6s off cloud playback but can of course play back from the SD. I don't have a sub.

The only time I have problems is if I am on a VPN. Sometimes it connects but it is a bit slow, other times it doesn't connect.

I don't know why, but I don't see ads. I am on version 6.3.4 on Android - looks like it updated on 13 March.
  9. zackkr's avatar
Adverts have spoilt all the yi cameras for me, not interested in a subscription as it was perfectly fine on an SDz so their trying to blackmail you into paying them for an annoyance they have created.

Disapointing to see low quality products with deals being promoted on HotUKDeals due to sponsorship.

Having 'exclusive' deals that companies are paying you to promote ruins what HotUKDeals started as...
    KevinMcComps's avatar
I buy nothing through direct links here anymore because of these changes to the site.

I go direct to the retailer site now after I see a deal. I'm sure many others do the same as we the users have provided most of the content for this site since it started.

I closed my proper HUKD account I'd had for 13 years just before Christmas. (edited)

I was using yi cameras for many years but I stopped using them when their app became full of bloatware and ads every time you opened it, I wouldn’t use them again until they fix it. (edited)

    Me too.
Open up the YI app on Android and get full screen adverts for random crap..
Have to find the tiny X in the corner to close them.

Gone over to Blink for most of my camera needs with the Sync 2 hub..

I used to love the YI stuff, but it's a pain to use the official app now without a subscription.
  12. peribro's avatar
As others have said, now plagued by adverts. Worth reading the recent reviews of the YiHome app - I've never seen so many 1 stars. I had six of these cameras but am replacing them with Eufy ones.
  13. luvsadeal's avatar
Not worth the trouble. All the features have been removed unless you pay. The app is rubbish and really delayed on notifications now. The cameras are rubbish at motion detection now too.
    spoon_2000's avatar
I've had these cameras (this model and others) for 6-7 years now. I use the YI Home app and don't get the adverts and nags that I see mentioned when these cameras come up. I wonder if its because I've had the app installed for so long? I still get the 6 seconds of cloud recording for free as well.
  14. gokitty's avatar
Good cheap cameras- had a few until they decided to lock features behind a subscription a few years ago or brick it if you didn't update.
  15. antontomov's avatar
I had to return 3-4 of these because they made their functions paid after 2 years of use without any notifications. Just an update and your cameras left on 50% functionality if you don't pay.

If (IF) one is serious about CCTV...I was told that one should ask themselves questions like this:

    Is it a deterrent?
    Inc. visual and voice

And failing it being/doing the above.. (i.e. burglar is intent)

Will an alarm (a out of reach unstoppable) sound immediately upon a actual trespass, breach/attempt to enter onto or into property?

Are the external cameras inc. wires and alarm (that are visible) protected and difficult if not near impossible to damage/remove/cut; rendering them useless?

Are the cameras that not intended to be visible (most likely internal) well hidden making a burglar unaware they are being monitored?

And are both the above connected up to a hidden central management system (such as a NVR with monitor) and able to store locally (and preferably remotely too) clear, easily recognisable recorded data showing an attempted/actual break in, for use after the event to help identify.

    Failing all those considerations...

Just keep a vicious dog that is mute and very very quiet and still until it:s too late (edited)

I've been using one camera for years and pay the sub but don't get any ads on my app.
  19. Lupus1462's avatar
I have some of these Yi the softwars privacy hidden tabs is insane. Bascially, they want to share data with thousands of companies and some of the data they want for years
  20. spammy's avatar
Any way to debloat and run as RTSP/ONVIF cams?
  21. BargainBros's avatar
Be wary of cheap cctv being hacked and then people watching you!! Amazon blink is a better option
  22. KevinMcComps's avatar
Great if you love intrusive annoying ads when you start the camera app.

    Binned our ones for Tapo.
  23. STi_prodrive's avatar
I've had these for years they fine, they do the job but the App has gotten worse over time !!
It's a nightmare trying to find something when it matters the most, could end up talking hours or days depending on how huge you're memory set up is.

Would anyone recommend another brand or model that has the same set up/installation as this? I would highly appreciate it
  24. DonnyBrago's avatar
The app is shocking, wouldn't waste your money.
  25. ladapower's avatar
Cheap for a reason. Glad I got rid of mine. Ads everywhere, some of the nicer features require subscription.

Bought Aqara instead which has been amazing so far.
