Do you still have to book if you have the gold pass or can you just turn up? (edited)
    roadrunner08's avatar
Every level pass must still book in advance
  2. Matthew_Rich's avatar
Pointless as you have to prebook weeks or months in advance to get a ticket with any of the annual passes
    lushlauz's avatar
It’s actually not that bad. We have had them since last may and only go school hols and weekends. Legoland discovery and sea life need to be booked a few days/ week in advance. The theme parks can usually be booked on the day or the day before x

Can i buy now and start using it in August, meaning the 1 year period starts in August.
    glenandem's avatar
you could buy them as gifts and then have 4 months to activate them so buy them just before the deal ends on 2nd April then 4 months from then!

Have a cold Merlin, purely for being A-holes to their premium members during Covid
    Social_Solutions's avatar
Any info on this please as I can't find details? I assume they just let passes run out etc during lockdown(s)?

What pittance does the discovery get?
    glenandem's avatar
Have a look on the Merlin website there’s a calendar with a available days, there’s a few weekends you can go and if you don’t mind taking the kids out of school there’s plenty of days to go!
We prefer to go in school time as it’s less busy so suits us a treat, two visits to a theme park and the discovery passes have more than paid for themselves for our family
  7. youngchap's avatar
Someone said this price is all year around if u have NHS account? What about thr student account or work account PAW
    Nono2010's avatar
That’s true, if you have BLC then this is usual price all year round
  8. Lokesh_Rao's avatar

When would the next sale be?

Had Merlin passes for years pre Covid but now they just aren't worth it. What you get access to and perks and discounts have been eroded over the years and gets less and less every year. You can't just get up one day and think "Let's go to Alton Towers", you have to see if there are any booking slots left, and if there aren't, then that's that, but you can still buy a full price ticket to go in. They used to be brilliant but I don't think I'll ever get them again in their current state.
    po_man's avatar
Wow, didn’t realise that was still the case! I wonder why that is? Cannot blame it on covid any longer..

Everything Merlin touches turns to s***.

Nothing they have taken over has been 'improved'; they are merely experts at cashing in on iconic childhood experiences and charging eye-watering prices.

Save your hard earned money IHMO.
    Croftybaby's avatar
Agreed. Save your money and go to Europa park or some of the european theme parks.
  12. MonkeyMan90's avatar
If you have kids then the cheapest one that's worthwhile is gold which is only really worthwhile if you live within a decent distance to the attractions
    david_robinson94's avatar
I think that's all relative. Last year we all had gold (family of four), going to Legoland or similar during school summer holidays was just hell on earth. 1 hour+ queues for every single ride, really sucked.

This year renewed with three silver and one gold (because of the free parking and food discount with gold) and only intend to go on off peak times. (edited)

we bought the discovery passes last year and was happy with them and with alton towers being our local park they easily paid for themselves after 2 trips.
ours runs out end of April but. can we buy these and top our current tickets up or activate these after those expire does anyone know?
    PAULTRD's avatar
No you can't. You used to be able to renew several weeks early but not anymore.
  14. roadrunner08's avatar
    Cheers heat added

Just got 2 gold passes for the kids
  15. LeeBell's avatar
correct me if I am wrong here but if I buy this and want fast track I still have to pay the £30 (4 rides fast track) or £50 (6 rides fast track) but could get £5 off that with a gold member ship (3 per pass - is that just three times in a year then I can get £5 off?)

To be honest, given we are tied to school holidays the queing just ruins it - it averages 90 minutes in school holidays for the major rides (and thats what my kids want to go on) so I vowed to buy fast track if we ever went again (though I know this screws over the non fast track people).

Anyway, If I buy 4 gold passes for £179 (total £716) am still looking at paying between £120 to £200 each day we visit Alton Towers as an example (depending on which fast track we choose). Is that right? It seems so much. My kids are 11 and 14, could we do it any cheaper if me and my wife do not ride anything? (edited)
    P-A1XAKS's avatar
I know you've acknowledged this in your post about non fastback people but if they really insist on offering fastrack, which let's face it is just bribery to jump the queue, then I'd hope that's make it as expensive as possible, have fewer people jumping the queue but still getting the same money, instead of cheap fastracks that everybody's doing apart from the poor few who either can't afford it or refuse to ethically.

Nothing worse than queueing for hours whilst seeing hundreds of people slip ahead of you.

There's that clip on Little Britain/Come fly with me and the speedy passes to board the flight, then the staff member confirms how popular they are and that they've sold them to every person on board

It's about time we stood together and refused to pay these bribery up charges everywhere, and see how fast the queues move, because it won't be as bad for everyone then, not just a select few.
  16. youngchap's avatar
The cheapest they do is £69?
Nothing cheaper than that at all with all the available discounts whatever possible?
They sent me an email saying half price or something but that's for the monthly one
  17. Adam's avatar
Regarding pre-booking, I'm sure I've read somewhere that if the day tickets aren't sold out you can still technically visit the attraction. Youd have to phone the Merlin team and check for this.
I do agree with what other comments are saying though the past few years they've run the parks into the ground.

Supposedly different this year though. Aka they've done quite a few tlc bits at Alton+ thorpe, unsure of the other attractions.

I have the old version of the Merlin pass, and don't plan on coming off it.
    Ali_Bongo's avatar
What are the advantages of the old version of the pass vs the new ones?
  18. youngchap's avatar
Anything else like any other annual passes similar to Merlin. Merlin Seems cool but do we have anything else any other activity or something
  19. LeeBell's avatar
Dilemma for me here. Going to get 4 gold passes. However, I notice Easter is 31st March next year so want to hold off until 2nd April to buy it so that we can use it next easter too.

However, I have booked a hotel equidistant between Legoland, Thorpe Park and Chessington for 10th to 13th April to hit those three. If I bought this on the 2nd April do you think there is a risk that I won't be able to book those days with just 8 to 11 days notice? They won't pull the deal before 2nd April would they?

The safer option is just to buy it now and it will exclude next easter.
  20. heathgriff5's avatar
Does anyone know how easy it is to prebook Alton Towers tickets these days? Can you get them day before or are they often sold out by then?

Whats the advantage of buying a pass
    jas1505's avatar
    Entry to any Merlin attraction.
  22. jas1505's avatar
    When does this expire?
    LeeBell's avatar
Someone upthread said 2nd April but cannot see that written anywhere. Would like to know also since I will buy but was hoping for it to expire after next easter (31st March).

Not had a good look if anyone’s added it already, if you have I beg my pardon, but my Halifax has 5% back if you go through sealife for it. Sealife allow you to book the pass through them, so all being well the cash back goes through which means it’s another £3.45 which brings it down to £65.55 for the discovery pass per pass. Bought one for me and one for my son as we’ve got a few things planned so should get our monies worth out of it so £65 ain’t bad as a day at Alton towers is £29 for parent and toddler, never mind a few other bits. Should have a tidy saving.

    hope it helps someone

Also a bit late, but if you don't have Halifax, I just booked using TopCashBack via The London Dungeons- it has tracked at 1.7% so far
  24. myrealusernameunavailable's avatar
Does anyone know if the booking fee applies every time one makes an advanced booking using one of these passes? And does it apply to all attractions? Thanks
    Tea_Time's avatar
There isn’t a booking fee if you have an active card just need to pre book the visit
  25. Lokesh_Rao's avatar
Anyone pls tell if anything is available to book for the long weekend? I have got platinum as gifts and not sure when to activate it
    Tea_Time's avatar
Should be. What do you want to go I’ll check
  26. youngchap's avatar
Looks like it doesn't go any lower than £69?
