does this must be installed by an electrician and require a set-up? or just wiring and plugging into a wall?

I have one, I got mine free with the car but British gas installed it. You have a right performance..
First they want to survey your property (when they get around to it). They cancelled 3 home visits and eventually we had a zoom call where I showed them the property. I then had to take a load of pictures, more pictures than Kim Kardashians had. Then you wait while they asses everything. They come back and give you a list of things (extras to buy) earthing / upgraded cable / something else I can't remember). Then they messaged a few days before installation and advised that I needed to get my supplier to upgrade the box outside (another month wait). Then they came back and said "fantastic you've had the upgrade, now we need to make sure the grid will allow you to have it" . Another 3 week wait, then that was cleared. They called up about a week later and gave me an install date - 6 weeks away. Some local sparky came around and installed it under a day.

TLDR - you 100% need a sparky to install and despite my hassle, I would still go for this even if I didn't have an electric car. The reason is that the grid won't let everyone on your street have a car charger so get one while you can.

I`m checking this site regularly for years without a post, but this time I had to register and post the 1st time.
I have this charger and I`ve got it through the lease company for FREE (charger + install included with the lease). It is a terrible and unreliable charger & SW. I`m glad that it was free, because it doesn`t worth any money in my opinion. I`m considering to get rid of it and pay for a proper decent charger instead.

I have the charger. If you had it installed with British gas via a subcontractor then PLEASE get them to check it for you. The reason I say this is because British gas are taking a company to court who they subcontracted the installation of EV chargers out to. Apparently the subbies made a complete mess of the majority of installs. I know this because we had a cowboy who didn't even install a fire rated box? and some other things. it was only by chance that British gas randomly picked my address via audit otherwise I wouldn't have known.

I almost went for this with a similar offer earlier this year as for 2023 this is a decent deal even with installation as despite what some may say at least where I am that is a good cost installed, however, unless this is an updated unit it needs a reliable 4g signal and doesn’t run off WiFi so just be a bit wary of that. Also being BG no doubt they will be quick to insist certain things need updating or will condemn them on install. That said it remains a good deal and again unless BG tariffs have moved on since I switched the only way to get good value EV charing if wanting BG as a supplier.

British Gas are just disgraceful to deal with. Their bills make no sense, customer service is unhelpful, monitoring is poor through the app etc. I would never go back to them even if it was cheaper.

Try rightcharge via carwow, getting an ohme epod installed for just over£800
  5. Humss's avatar
Best check with your supplier of electricity first and your car to see if they need a compatible one to be used or not... some suppliers work better with some brands as they have integrations to give you automation to charge when cheaper rate etc...
    Daray's avatar
That’s spot on. Some tariffs like Intelligent from Octopus require connection and compatibility with charger/EV.
  6. h4music's avatar
I got mine installed via octopus (it's an Ohme charger) for £499 including installation
    Paranoia's avatar
Recently? They seem to be from £900 installed now.

Need an EV charger as I got a polestar a few months back. I’m currently on British Gas but was planning to buy Ohme and get an electrician to install it. Then I can hopefully choose either OvO or Octopus Go (can’t get intelligent for some reason due to either car or area not sure) has anyone got any advice?
    TheDickieBoy's avatar
For intelligent you need either a compatible car or charger. You should be able to find a list on the octopus website but sometimes they aren't the quickest to update it. In terms of charge points ohme, zappi and wallbox are compatible. Not sure if it's just certain versions mind.

Bit of a minefield on EV charging tech.
Made harder with the off peak tariffs having stipulations.

Octopus Intelligent seem to be the best but you must have a car which they support or an Ohme charger.
Ohme chargers downfall is that it only has mobile connectivity. after 3 years you then need to find a SIM deal on HUKD :-) Others simply have wifi or an ethernet connection) (edited)
    TheDickieBoy's avatar
I think zappi and wallbox charge points are also now compatible
  9. Daray's avatar
Beware it’s not compatible with Octopus Intelligent, which is currently the cheapest tariff for a household with EV.
  10. Paul_G7D's avatar
Great deal, but nobody can tempt me away from Octopus. If you know, you know

    ...what?

Shame installation isn't included. £500 is a huge charge

    Too much (edited)

British gas are horrific with customer care. With so much negative feedback and unhappy customers, any other company would have been disallowed to trade or forced to be taken over from the likes of government enforced operators. They suck and they don't care.
The only people that seem happy with them are pensioners that have been with them years and well before they seem to stop caring. (edited)
  13. HellriderUKDeals69's avatar
Why only 2 year warranty? It should be 10 years at least. This whole EV business looks like companies are ripping us off. (edited)
    ezzer72's avatar
Based on...? The only 10 year warranty I can think of instantly is the one Samsung invented to con people into buying one of their QLED TVs instead of a far superior OLED.

You wasn't one of those that fell for that were you?
  14. dougster79's avatar
I'd stay clear of getting British Gas to install. Took weeks even getting someone to do a virtual assessment then said they'd need to send someone out to check but had no timescale when someone available. Ended up getting it fitted in a few days with a local electrical company.

FreeCharge mode – mode activated in the Hive app in which we remotely schedule, at our
discretion, when your charge point charges an EV to reach its maximum battery level by the ‘Ready
by’ time you set. In this mode electricity consumed by your charge point is at no cost to you

they control when it reaches max battery - not sure how practical this is.
  16. imcheap69's avatar
How much £/kWh to charge after the included 2,290kWh? That's only good for about 3 months for me
    ChurchoftheD20's avatar
It's going to be whatever your tariff is for your house for the £/kWh
  17. Jani_Papa's avatar
Not a deal I bought mine about 3 months ago when it wasn’t on “offer” paid the exact same price.
    ezzer72's avatar
Did you get the 2,290 free kWh?
  18. Daray's avatar
The standard price, given the installation cost, is another £400–500.
  19. denwo1982_'s avatar
I’m looking at buying an electric car, my worry is, can someone steal your electricity? As in drive onto your drive and connect to this device and then use it? Or is there a padlock or PIN number before the electricity is used?
    TheDickieBoy's avatar
Dont know about this specific charge point but some do have this function. Although it seems very unlikely that anyone would do this as it takes hours to charge a car on a 7kW charge point. Generally folk that steal stuff like to be in and out as quick as possible. Siphoning petrol would be a lot quicker and would be worth more.

500 for install on a poor EV charger with BGas doing the work...no way. cold, can't wait until Octopus overtake them as largest, only then will they hopefully try harder.
    HellriderUKDeals69's avatar
Then Octopus will behave the same.
  21. wyx087's avatar
Let me just install a line of EV chargers onto my house, in order to get all the different deals.

This kind of deal turning out to be like gen 1 smart meters. Ridiculous.
    Alan_Wake's avatar
It's quite obviously geared at first time buyers in an emerging EV market with potential of millions over coming 5 years. Not rocket science is it. I have an EV charger already, but good luck to those that get this deal. (edited)

Anyone got any thoughts on Podpoint? It seems their installation cost is fixed. We've got a pretty simple installation adjacent to home consumer unit and main feed less than 2m yet they want to charge two days labour.
  23. MT2045's avatar
I have had the Ohme Wall Charger for over three and a half years without getting a new sim.
I am on the Intelligent Octopus tariff which is the ideal solution for me as we have 2 fully electric cars, all we need to do is switch cars in the Ohme app.
    matwalaboy's avatar
How much did the installation cost - and what is the tariff you pay? I am on a standard octopus plan right now, thinking of buying an electric car, hence the questions. Thanks.
  24. xmal's avatar
Please check your postcode as you may be eligible for a £400 installation grant like I was. This has made mine around the £500 price point installed
    youdy's avatar
Any links to where you found this out?
  25. MT2045's avatar
I had 2 Ohme Wall Chargers installed (one for one of my employees) in May 2020 by Smarthomecharge.
They were around £600 + vat but at the time there was a £350 grant
Currently Intelligent Octopus is 7.5p from 23:30 to 05:30 and 30.52p at other times.

The good thing with intelligent octopus is the 7.5p is for all the house use not just charging your car, so if you can schedule washing machines and dishwashers etc for the cheap perion you only pay 7.5p.

Also you sometimes get smart charging outside these times so it is possible to get 12 hours @ 7.5p if the car needs charging a lot. (edited)
    JudgeReinhold's avatar
Note this unit isn't compatible with Octopus Intelligent so folk would need one of the few compatible EVs.
  26. obsydian's avatar
Check your main supply is not looped, if it is the Power Networks need to do a teardown up, applies to flats, but also terraced and some semi detached houses.
  27. Hamster192's avatar
Not a bad deal. I've just gone for the Ohme home pro, mainly so I can I use the Octopus intelligent tariff for 7.5pkw off peak, compared to 9pkw off peak on this.
