I highly recommend you go for the PS+ Extra tier, it's a no brainer with the 100s of games that come with it several top AAA games too. Your son will be very happy.

Also buy top-up cards from Shopto and redeem on his account and then purchase using that to make it a little cheaper.

Credit on account will expire but I think it's after like 2 years? Highly likely you will spend it, if not now then on next years renewal.

You can buy any combination of gift cards, whatever value you need ultimately, but I think your PSN account caps the amount of credit at something like £200-250 that can be held at any one time.

Generally buying a bigger one makes the biggest saving, and ShopTo are typically great value for PSN credit. The highest value doesn't always carry the biggest discount in % terms though, so have a scan through their options to get what serves you best.

“Extra” is probably the most suitable. That way he’ll be able to play online plus have access to the large games catalogue. It’s worth it for the first year of owning a PS to at least try the games out (but Ive personally let mine expire and opted to buy and sell games instead going forward). 

Try not to buy it full price though, it’s a rip off at £100 rrp. If you can create an account now it’s better as you may get offered this deal. They don’t do many.

Always remember to use discounted gift cards eg Shopto, cdkeys etc when buying anything through PlayStation store including Ps+ subs. 

Ideally you need to get your sub to expire during Black Friday week or mid December for any deals, this is my plan from 1st Sept 2024.

I was thinking of cancelling as I've barely used it this year but after seeing how cheap my renewal price is I don't want to cancel and it revert to full price.

Well the 50% off offer would usually come around the 18th for expired subs, I'm not sure it's worth the risk waiting in case you miss out.

Xmas = £25 off all tiers (12 months only). Equating to 25% off premium, 50% off essential and some % between those for Extra.

Well you don't usually get up to date games on the service(day one games) but you do get games not too old.

Extra is probably the one for you if you're not interested in streaming really old games, take a look here it has several top AAA games.

Black Friday did let atleast some Premium user's stack at a discount but only if their sub ran out just after Black Friday deals.

My plan is to let my Premium expire on 1st September 2024 then buy a 3 month Extra sub so it runs out for the Christmas 2024 deals.

Same here. Wanted to add another year. That's a bummer although last time I paid £75 and it stacked for me until February 2025

Turn off auto renewal(cancel) as to not get caught out in 12 months time.
