Update 1
06/03/2024 Update - ASRock bundle out of stock.
The Ryzen 7 7700 is almost £300 on it's own. The ASRock bundle is here. The 65w TDP of the Ryzen 7 7700 should be OK with the Asus board, but the ASRock is better if you want to change the CPU later on(better VRM and bigger heatsinks). Stock CPU cooler included.
Key Features(CPU)
The AMD Ryzen 7 7700 is a desktop processor with 8 cores, launched in January 2023, at an MSRP of $329. It is part of the Ryzen 7 lineup, using the Zen 4 (Raphael) architecture with Socket AM5. Thanks to AMD Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) the core-count is effectively doubled, to 16 threads. Ryzen 7 7700 has 32 MB of L3 cache and operates at 3.8 GHz by default, but can boost up to 5.3 GHz, depending on the workload. AMD is making the Ryzen 7 7700 on a 5 nm production node using 6,570 million transistors. The silicon die of the chip is not fabricated at AMD, but at the foundry of TSMC. You may freely adjust the unlocked multiplier on Ryzen 7 7700, which simplifies overclocking greatly, as you can easily dial in any overclocking frequency.
With a TDP of 65 W, the Ryzen 7 7700 consumes typical power levels for a modern PC. AMD's processor supports DDR5 memory with a dual-channel interface. The highest officially supported memory speed is 5200 MT/s, but with overclocking (and the right memory modules) you can go even higher. ECC memory is supported, too, which is an important capability for mission-critical systems, to avoid data corruption. For communication with other components in the machine, Ryzen 7 7700 uses a PCI-Express Gen 5 connection. This processor features the Radeon Graphics integrated graphics solution.
Hardware virtualization is available on the Ryzen 7 7700, which greatly improves virtual machine performance. Programs using Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) can run on this processor, boosting performance for calculation-heavy applications. Besides AVX, AMD has added support for the newer AVX2 and AVX-512 instructions, too.

sorted byMy philosophy has long been to buy mATX or ATX with 4 DIMM slots, populate two with what I need now, and have the option to easily upgrade later. That's sort of how I kept my old Sandy Bridge for nearly a decade - it started out with 2x8GB and later ended up with 4x8GB.
I think it's just market responding to demand.
I'd prefer the option as well, but that's why I think it's happening.
A 7700 from Amazon or AWD-IT is £289, and if we take it the Asus Prime B650M-R is £90 awd-it.co.uk/asu…tml that's a £50 saving with them also pre-installing/verifying it.
The only thing I'm wondering is if the 7700 is maybe an OEM/tray version. Still wouldn't put me off, but it means it's not the 3 year AMD warranty, but 1 year with AWD-IT.
But then generally processors these days, if they work for a month they'll probably last till they're irrelevant. (edited)

Anybody suggest whether this is a decent upgrade? I know I would need to buy some new Ram.
in my opinion, if you're planning on using a 7600, then you should go for a different board. the primary focus of this deal is you can get a 7700 for so cheap.
For my needs, I know I'm not doing anything crazy so decided to make do with this for now. I intend on getting a better motherboard if this starts being problematic (I am using top quality components and this is definitely the weak point)
