About this deal

Update 1
Now rolling out

From the start of April, you'll be able to have a basic messaging service, on BA flights, for free (Previously there was a cost)

The airline said it will roll out the service over two weeks from April 3, enabling travellers to send and receive text on apps such as WhatsApp, iMessage, Facebook Messenger and Teams.

WiFi enhancements for customers

With more customers looking to remain connected with the world from their seats, from April 3, British Airways Executive Club Members will start to be able to send messages free of charge on a single device using the airline’s WiFi - whatever cabin they’re travelling in. The service will be available on every WiFi-enabled aircraft within two weeks of the rollout date*.

The airline has also become the first to offer a WiFi-enabled inflight customer care solution to solve issues in the moment – even at 35,000ft. Created especially for British Airways by Microsoft, customer care teams on the ground are now able to connect with cabin crew colleagues across more than 300 flights a day. The functionality allows crew to help solve any unexpected issues before a flight lands at one of the airline’s more than 200 destinations.

Free messaging

The free messaging pass will allow British Airways Executive Club members to use messaging-type online applications, such as WhatsApp, iMessage, Facebook Messenger and Teams Chat - without images, videos or attachments, text only.

*WiFi is available on all of the airline’s Gatwick fleet and more than 80 per cent of British Airways’ Heathrow fleet, rolling out to 100 per cent by the end of 2025.

Free messaging will be available on all BA connected aircraft for the full duration of the flight on a single device. Executive Club Members will access by logging into their account. Non-members can sign up on board or before they travel, in order to use the free Messaging service.

Executive Club Sign Up (Free) TO EVERYONE, regardless off Class.

If you want to send videos/images etc they'll still be a cost, but a good way to keep in touch, on a basic level, with friends/family.

Alot of negative comments for something that isn’t mandatory?! If you don’t like it or have reservations about it then don’t use it!

I personally think it’s a useful benefit and will hopefully mean other airlines follow.

The main negative comments seem to be from people saying that BA certainly aren't the first, i.e. no others are going to "follow" because BA aren't leading.

Only way they can get people to fly with them, offering free access to WhatsApp, etc, only to data harvest to sell to the highest bidder, BA has hit a new low, currently absolutely joke of an airline.

The 'market has spoken' BA needs to compete with other airlines and 'up their game considerably 'free access' to apps isn't going to fix the unlaying problems with BA.

BA sucks but this is some tinfoil hat nonsense.

What use is encrypted data to them?

At most they can sell the profile of you and you're device which every network and app has access to whenever you access them.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Jeez.

I fly a lot. I don't really enjoy it. One thing I do enjoy though is the fact that I can't be reached. I have an excuse for not responding to messages for several hours. Looks like my excuse might be evaporating...

Good move. United and Turkish Airlines also have been offering this for ages.

Yes and Air Canada also been doing it for a while now…I was surprised when flying BA to Toronto in December that they BA didn’t have it.

Don't tell me no one is reading our conversations?!? Don't forget it has been done purposely especially in the ports etc for a security reason.

Keep reading and you'll realise most people have very little understanding of the technology and like to jump to conclusions about being watched or monitored.

I have stopped reading the thread for the moment after reading "British Airways Executive Club Members".
I will trawl through the discussion later to find out if the proposed offer will apply to lower classes!

They’re not the first, Norwegian Air provided free WiFi on their long haul Dreamliners many years back.
    markgh's avatar
That's what I thought, reading this. I flew Norwegian in maybe 2014 and there was free WiFi for everyone, not limited to messaging or to those paying extra. And this wasn't long haul, just UK to Sweden. (edited)

Christ, can’t we just put the phone down.
    A_BHot's avatar
Why would a long boring flight be the right opportunity to put the phone down? Surely there are more obvious moments a cull should prevail, like while socialising in a pub perhaps…

Great. Flights are bad enough without the "ping! ping! ping!" of people next to you constantly messaging.
    A_BHot's avatar
Flights are bad enough when they’re a hell of a lot more boring with no internet access whatsoever!

    Good perk BA.

yes other airlines do free WiFi stuff but free on the most used airline out of the UK (BA has over 50% of heathrow landing slots) you cannot complain.

I doubt Ryan air will be offering this freebie anytime soon.
  12. Jef_B's avatar
Zimbabwe Airways will probably roll theirs out in 2032 then.

Depends if the onboard BA WiFi is working, which sometimes it doesn't for random reasons. It also won't be available if your flight is scheduled to be on a Finnair plane (check your booking for the words Operated by Finnair). Although you've booked with BA they are using a number of Finnair aircraft for short haul services out of Heathrow, and they have not paid Finnair to provide any WiFi.

Basically don't depend on it, but if it works once you've taken off and are above 10000ft then it's a bonus. (edited)
    rapid111111's avatar
Separately, Finnair have their own WiFi right? You can pay for an in-flight package?

Free WIFI in the USA on Delta Domestic.. thank for reminding me @Dan_82 i used this last year and forgot to post it then ..

    hotukdeals.com/dea…627

Other US Carriers charge for Domestic so it's a nice extra.

This is FREE in all classes of carriage !.

BA's partners in the US charge you so even if they give you free access to those apps you won't get anything on partner flights in USA. (edited)

Hoping they force people to have their phones on silent so they don't disturb other passengers.
    The_Bounty_Bear's avatar
Plenty of people already sign up for WiFi on board so this is hardly new.

Welcome to the information era. (edited)

I’ve not been on a light for a while to be fair, are phones no longer required to be turned off these days?
    SkyBaker's avatar
Take off and landing only. Although not sure how many do.

The planes wifi is turned off during these times to limit use.
