Not halal guys, their meat is pre-stunned.
    MattH1973's avatar
Actually all New Zealand lamb is pre-stunned, (mainly by electricity) and virtually all is slaughtered in the Halal way. It can still be labelled and classed as Halal, despite being pre-stunned. It can also not be marked as Halal, mainly for export to the likes of the U.K, due to weak laws that don't insist on the method of slaughter being declared on packaging. (edited)

    I wonder if it halal?

Why buy lamb from the other side of the world when we can buy the best right here on our doorstep, Welsh lamb.

    There's a seasonal factor involved.
The southern hemisphere is 6 months out, so their summer is our winter etc..
It's too early in the UK for fresh spring lamb, as lamb is best when it's typically 4 to 6 months old.
UK lamb is most plentiful in the autumn, and conversely you find NZ lamb is most plentiful in our spring.

Even if you ordered one online and thought you'd booked one, you wouldn't have actually achieved anything until that order was picked in-store. Virtually all supermarkets operate the exact same way and your order is picked from the shelf. What you receive against what you order is dependent on what stock is on the shelves at the time it's picked by staff, not the time it's ordered. This is again the exact reason why someone may place their Christmas order weeks or months in advance, under the pretence they have reserved stock, they haven't.

For those who prefer fresh over frozen, Sainsbury's are selling whole leg of lamb for £6.50/kg with Nectar card.

As it’s come from New Zealand I’d expect it to have been frozen for transport and then defrosted before putting on the shelf?

Last deal about 2 weeks ago got one that worked out about £4.50 a kilo after over 60s discount 10% on Tuesday. (edited)

Mine says frozen in DEC 2022 and use by May 2025 .. that surly can't be right ??
    MattH1973's avatar
It is pal, you could probably eat in ten years or more and it'd still be fine if stored and kept frozen correctly. (edited)

Anybody seen a good price on a whole leg of fresh British lamb? - don't ask me why it has to be British.
  12. aje2010's avatar
Can anyone confirm if these are Halal?
    MattH1973's avatar
Pre-stunned Halal they will be, but not labelled as such or certified as such.

How do you get that? Thanks

I feel I’m being ripped off somewhere - I bought similar weight from a halal butcher for around £40 last week. How can it be so cheap to import as opposed to using British lamb? I’m going vegetarian!!
    blahblahblah1234's avatar
Wrong season atm for fresh British lamb. Animals need to be 4 to 6 months old, but new lambs are only just popping out.

    Instore from tomorrow.

Does anyone know if that will still be available on Thursday, please? Thanks

How much fat does this have on it in comparison to other retailers? Thanks (edited)
    whatachef2's avatar
I got two recently from Iceland and found them to have fairly little fat; just enough for flavour.

First thought is that somewhere there's a limping lamb with three legs.
    herrbz's avatar
Nah, it's already had its throat slit.

Thanks, managed to get some for a change. Worked out less than £5/kg!

What is luxury about a leg of lamb, one might ask.
    Axminister_redX6J's avatar
All meat is luxury, if we get into a bad war you will find that out but not every country is rich we are just lucky.
  25. mohammedyafai52's avatar

Got a 3.2 kg for a tenner in local east London branch. Was labelled Australian something or the other, not the Iceland luxury label. Scanned at 10 a the till. You're only allowed to buy one my branch. Weights vary, some of them were 2.2-2.8kg. receipt said 1800g. (edited)

Great offer yet a lot of false information. All lambs cows goats are stunned before processing the animal within non religious meat processing as well as halal meat (don't be surprised) BUT kosher meat and jhatka meat can not be stunned for religious reasons. Please Google for yourself.
Small correction is the exception is HMC (only 1 in UK) but others such HFA HFB etc (over 100 groups) practice same as non religious meat processing (edited)
