My advice, not that anyone asked me for any, is to buy quality not quantity.

You can do pretty much everything you would ever need to do in a home kitchen with 1 large chef's knife, 1 tomato knife and 1 small paring knife. You really don't need anything else. (edited)

Out of interest what would be a good brand to get if someone was wanting to pay more?

Cancelled purchase, because not dishwasher safe!

Are these really Japanese? Are they made in Japan or China? I've been stung before with knives claiming to be Japanese. My old set is 10 years old and needs replacing, can't really sharpen them nicely any more.

It says Japanese steel, which is probably right because Joseph Joseph would unlikely be lying.

However, just because it says Japanese steel it doesn't mean they were made in Japan or they are forged steel or make any reference to quality.

Not sure what you expect for £30. If you wanted a proper Japanese steel knife (and the proper ones are forged) you are looking at double that amount for one knife as a minimum.

These are far better for a little more. Have gone up a little from £59.99 to £62.90.

A single good knife will cost more than this entire set, so don't go expecting anything too good from this! Looks like a good enough deal for a starter set or for students etc though.

I think the students will survive with a set at half this price. These ones are for the average user. When I say average user, I mean most of the people who use a knife on a regular basis. Most people will spend around this price for knives. I've got better knives, but up until 2 years ago, I used just 'normal' knives from Wilko, Dunelms, etc. And yes, I cook daily. But I like my Zwilling. A single good knife would be about 5 times this price. (edited)

They are great knifes, very sharp at beginning so be careful.
Have them only few weeks so will just see how hard steel is as it states „Japanese” so very interesting.

The OP included the Keep graph which shows it’s been this price for some time! Here’s the three camels graph:

What would people recommend to sharpen knives? Ideally something that isn’t too difficult to do.

I’ve just watched an awful lot of YouTube and read many articles to research this for my new victorinox set. Turns out your classic pull-through sharpeners are awful for your blade and often just tear up the edge so short term sharpness for long term dullness. I settled on this which is like a sharpening stone but using a diamond grit without the need for lubrication. Can’t fault it really - watch some videos on YouTube about it before purchasing. Surprisingly easy to use and great results (used on the old knives to test, new ones are sharp out the box for now).
