Great CPU , bought it a few years ago on another deal (for 400 quid!) - still using it and very happy. A steal at this price.

Will this work with an MSI B450 A-pro max motherboard? Currently running 3600 CPU from 4 years ago with 48gb memory for 3d modeling work ( Maya, Substance painter) wondering if it would be a worthwhile upgrade

Great CPU, would note that if your sole focus is gaming and you're building a new system I would probably opt for a ryzen 5 7600 instead which can be had for about £180 and gets you all the advantages of being on the latest AM5 platform. This is nice for someone already on AM4 however.

    AM4 - for gaming - would a 5800x3D not be a better choice?

Another 4 ½ year old 3900X here...£216 for 20% improvement. Or keep the 3900X and save for AM5 setup.

    Gaming on AM4? Spend £230 on a 5700X3D/5800X3D
    Productivity on AM4? 5900X

Got £500 to spend (excluding sale of old kit) - AM5

I personally have a 5800x3d and a 4070super and think it will serve me well for a while until I have to move to a AM5 system

I'm on 5800X / 3070, I'd love 5800X3D+4070Super! I've been looking at upgrading GPU since getting a GigabyteM28U 4K 144 display....the sensible thing would just be offloading demanding games to the second 1080p display and wait a few months, but the 4070ti Super and 7900XTX look intriguing 😩. Moreso nvidia because we live in the DLSS era!

Am I right in thinking that this will offer about 20% improvement over my current 3900X for processor-intensive tasks?

Jumping to 5900x will be pretty decent given the higher IPC, better clocks and better memory compatability.

These will likely also be a newer stepping that can achieve slightly higher clocks at lower voltages than at launch all those years ago. Can then also sell your 3900x for a good chunk too

    So it's over £225 with P&P, let's be honest on costs @hotukdeals

Great observation! Alternatively you could just apply some basic common sense and math.
