I have a m1 8gb air and honestly it’s a real workhorse but it does struggle sometimes. Personally would recommend a 16gb device for the future. Mac last an insane amount of time so unless you upgrade often you want 16gb imo

Only a matter of time, before some Apple zealot posts "8Gb is enough, this is not Windows".
I agree. 16Gb = better. (apart from the scandalous fee Apple charge for the uplift)

You'd have to be crazy to buy a non-upgradeable desktop with only 8 GB of ram.

    It's like an expensive paperweight.
    Crazy-Climber's avatar
Its not a desktop, but thanks for the insight based on baseless knowledge

I had a few iMacs before for many years but not anymore. There are so many comprimises. You would likely need to plug in an external hdd defeating the purpose of an all in one. 24" is also too small nowadays.

In most cases you are better off having a Mac mini plus monitor which is so much more flexible. You can upgrade monitor as and when, and also Mac mini is cheap to replace.

You'd only really need an iMac for things like office/gym receptions.

    Why only for office/gym/receptions ?

Was eyeing this up yesterday and debating whether to share on here. I wanted to wait until I bought one myself incase posting it caused it to sell out :P

Anyway, really good deal for my usage. This will be used in my wife's salon on the reception. So after vat £666.66

    I own a 2017 Mac 27" desktop with 40GB RAM - no way i'd touch a 8GB model that cannot be upgraded in 2024

I have a 27" iMac with 32gb RAM - my 16gb Mac mini M2 Pro absolutely destroys it...

The 'problem' with this entry-level model, as I remember it, is it lacks the second fan and heat pipe of the model that was generally sent out to a lot of reviewers. In other words, it gets very hot under load, though like all computers it will thermally throttle performance once a certain temperature is reached. The argument against Apple is, because they like their computers to be as near silent as possible, they set that temperature limit very high. I use - used, before it died - an iMac to heat a box room study!

The conventional wisdom being that heat and dust can shorten the working life and... It will thermally throttle performance to protect itself and you could use a fan control app to spin up the fan at a lower temp than Apple target, but this works much less well in this single fan model without headpipe, apparently. Good resale value wise, it's hard to sell an Apple silicon Mac that's broken because they aren't easily repaired, despite years of sustained pressure from the right to repair lobby.

Take out Apple Care and don't over tax it and I'm sure you'll be just fine. If you haven't seen it in person, yet, it has a very lovely screen for media consumption, if you don't mind white bezels (I'm told you get used to them) I generally have good customer care experiences with Costco, so if you're going to buy it from a physical store, they are a pretty good bet compared to some... stores... one in particular that I won't mention. Anyway, hot (no pun intended!).

Is it possible to use this screen as a display?
    MasterFunk73's avatar
    No, unfortunately.

    8/8 meaning 8-GPU and 8gb Ram?
    BrianButterfield's avatar
Yes and with this version you just hear that fan whirling away at such a high pitched noise. My mum couldn't stand the thing and also only having two ports annoyed her cause she had to keep unplugging stuff. The 8/8 version is quieter which is a big pro as it has two fans and they seem to spin less.

Got mine for £804.97 in currys. Amazing for what it is. Never have ram issues doing anything for work, and I don’t game on macs anyway so good for me! Speakers, display and keyboard are excellent.
    v1n's avatar
Ram means it will only be a short term product. So you'll be fine now but screwed in the long term, wishing that you got one with better ram

This version isn't worth £600 tbh, if you have to buy an M1 iMac, I'd look for a better deal for the 8/8 version. It's quieter, slightly more powerful, comes with Touch Id and has 4 ports on the back and not just two. They often pop up for cheaper than this and CEX give two years warranty over Apple's M1, where I bought my mum's and it was basically brand new for £675. (edited)
    Bargainhunter_13's avatar
You bought a 8/8 from cex for £675???

If you love buying rose gold tat from B&M then this is the perfect desktop for your chic apartment.

Surprised at the lack of Apple loyalists defending the "8GB on Mac is like muh 16GB on WinDoze herp derp".

It's a good price relative to what it's been but it's a cold deal ultimately as it's extremely poor value. In a couple of years apple's planned obsolescence will kick in and you suddenly have an out of date brick. That's not even factoring in the pathetic amount of RAM that all but guarantees the machine is useless for anything other than scrolling Facebook or adding emojis to a video of your dog.

You also get a single noisy fan in the 8/7 config, but it's okay, the machine can't handle anything heavy anyway so at worst its a small annoyance. (edited)

I edit RAW files from my camera on a base M1 Air in Lightroom. No issues whatsoever. Would I prefer 16GB, definitely. Does the receptionist using safari to book appointments and email customers need 16GB, no.

keyboard, mouse and 4.5k screen for £799. Great deal!
    crack_shot's avatar
    its 24 inch
why would you put a 4.5k screen on... actually i know the answer. video editing.

the 256 hdd and 8 gb ram are perfect for video editing

If you want a laugh just posted a way better deal than this and fully expect it to get no heat

I had this. It runs a little slow if you have a lot of apps open at once. But for using office suite apps and browsing it’s brilliant. You won’t get a better screen for the price. I would have bought it if I could use the screen as a display and use it as a second device for backups etc. plus the keyboard and mouse are worth a lot of money by themselves.
  19. Smm0's avatar
Is it possible to get one without a huge bezel at the bottom?
    Jyoosi's avatar
But without the super cool retro 1980's monitor bezel where else would you put your apple stickers?
  20. Josh_Fletcher's avatar
Better to get an M1 Mac mini has less compromise.
    rodman's avatar
add 24inch 4.5K screen, keyboard and mouse apple compatible.

Having just bought a MacBook Pro for almost double the price, faster the chip speed and double the memory. It’s a no from me. However it’s a pretty good deal for those who want an iMac. (edited)

Wow, these Apple apologists are really into "self flagellation" 8GB in 2024 and for near £800.

Each to their own however, if you see this as good value go for it.
  23. DPP's avatar
They are on the 3rd chip (M3), probably be M4 by the end of the year. Ram and HD is not upgradable once you buy it, if you are looking for a spec upgrade the only option is to buy from Apple direct (brace yourself, its not cheap). No doubt a great piece of kit.
