No still 249 but reviews are not encouraging in terms of wifi connection, heating, battery and screen resolution. Great price still. (edited)

    IPS or TN panel?
    ceph042_'s avatar
    ceph042_
Mentions here it's a WVA display. I've got one of them in a Dell, viewing angles are like an IPS but colour gamut is quite low. Not as bad as a TN.

I think the higher price of £404 happens if you use BLC, student discount or employee portals. By clearing the browser or cache should resolve this issue.

I wish there was an option to buy with no OS to make it even cheaper! (edited)

    Just took the plunge too!

Anyone know how much RAM this can be upgraded to and suitable ones that ‘fit’. Apologies, newbie here. Would it void the warranty?

Any guidance of how to DIY would be much appreciated.

Anyone else still not received a confirmation email after purchase? Bought last night and find it weird nothing's come through!

Nope, received 2 emails - order confirmation received almost immediately after purchase and processing order email 2 hours after.

Usually I take a screenshot of any big purchases of the order number etc on the website just in case I typed in the email address wrongly and need to contact customer service. Did you manage to capture any info that you can your order number? (edited)

Reading the reviews. So... couldn't I just buy a wifi dongle to get around wifi problems if applicable? Couldn't I just use an external keyboard if the apparently not great keyboard has keys that stop working on me? Re the disappointing screen, couldn't I just plug it into external monitor, I mean you don't have to suffer a crap screen apart from when on the move. Re overheating, don't live in a hot US state (where some of those reviews originate from; Scotland, so no worries, there) and then -

Who am I kidding, every HP laptop I've bought, because they were dirt cheap, has barely seen out a year, my worst experience was a trip back from the US where the laptop apparently didn't go into sleep mode and physically partially melted in my backpack, too hot to touch, smell, fortunately I was sitting on my own and, back then, the batteries were removeable. Me having nightmares ever since that I could have caused a fire on an airplane. And what's funny about that - nothing's funny about it - is, on a later connecting flight I sat next to a perfectly nice person who worked for HP, who sympathetically told me stories that began with "I shouldn't say this, but..."

My HP office printer, that I bought from Costco because of a cashback promotion mentioned on this very site, that took over a year of many back and forths between me and HP before they finally redeemed it, also barely saw out a year (the screw rattling around in the box should have been a clue) though at least the scanner part still works! I found replacement inks were so expensive, it's no great loss (I now have an Epson with ink tanks that you can simply refill).

Run away. Or don't, you know, because of course it's pointless worrying, yours might be fine and I won't pretend that at that price I'm not tempted and to just use the workarounds I wrote, above, stupid though they are if you bought it to be portable. I don't have fun memories dealing with HP's customer support, though perhaps that's recently improved. Prime day was stressful enough! Must... resist... impulse purchase!

Comments about the build quality are amusing, because they said the same about the Pavilion laptops of the 2012 era of which we have several in the house.

Apart from the battery giving up, they are as good now as then. I've swapped out to SSDs, but that is all.

I'm convinced that some people are just abusive in their use, and these probably can't handle the abuse as well as some.
    ceph042_'s avatar

I still have one of them, a 2012 Pavillion G6. Surprised it's still working after years of use. Those models never lasted build quality was atrocious.

And i thought my asus vivobook for £229 was a brilliant deal, still prefer the keyboard and overall look, but this completely trumps the Asus for battery performance, raw performance and storage. £20 more for a solid machine. The realtek cards i've had in past Omen 16 laptops were perfectly fine once drivers were rolled out properly.
WVA panel for those wondering, wish manufacturers would just say rather than leave the display's specifications open to interpretation (what's the point of just saying micro-edge, 250 nits 45% NTSC). WVA is pretty much IPS but without the colour accuracy.

My brother had a HP pavilion 15.6" laptop with an extremely similar chassis design about 5 years back, thing fell apart at the hinges within a month provided normal use, broke from opening and closing it normally. These HP laptops are built like absolute turds, the reviews already tell me enough about how long this crap will last, avoid at all costs

Looks like a great deal for most people.. much better than those Prime Day deals, no pentium to be seen here which is what you'd expect at this price. The i5 is no slouch, a 4C/8T so would perform great at most tasks. Plus RAM is upgradable which many people here, including me love.
