This looks like a decent deal but the parks (especially Alton Towers) are in a dire state compared to what they used to be.

Penny pinching at every corner, rides and effects broken for months on end, many rides have been removed and downtime is on the rise with many rides closed throughput an average day, and far more than they used to be. All whilst Merlin greed tries to take every penny they can possibly get away with

Went Alton Towers over the weekend. Many big rides closed at least for a few hours. Queues were awful, you could only manage 4 rides in the day. I don't think 4 rides are worth the £40 entrance fee, £7 parking, and exorbitant cost of food (about £15 per head for basics).

In the Midlands, Drayton Manor is still the best theme park. It still has Storm Force (Alton Towers no longer has an equivalent, only crappy rapids), and Britain's scariest ride in Apocalypse. Other highlights are Maelstrom and Shockwave. You can do the whole park in a day, go to the zoo and enjoy your sugary donuts. Unlike Alton Towers you don't spend half your day walking because the site is much better designed.

Maybe worth saying for O2 customers only

    and Virgin Media.

Tempted but discovery pass is worthless if you work as all weekends are excluded and you need a pass for every person in the family meaning a family of 4 is still an eye watering £508.
    DDTTAA's avatar
HERE is the Calendar. as trebor said, not all weekends excluded.

It's better value for money & quality to fly to Florida instead.
    ennsea's avatar
Stupid response. This pass gets you into around 30 attractions for a year with restrictions based on the product you selected. Flying to Florida and paying for the park for one weekend is not going to be cheaper or better value than this.

I have gold Merlin passes and I live about 35 min from Thorpe Park and Legoland and an hour from Chessington. We find a cheapish hotel near Alton Towers and go up for a few days twice a year. None of these theme parks stop you bringing in your own food so I tend to grab meal deals from a nearby supermarket and pack bottles of water, snacks etc and this saves on spending on food and drink inside the parks, even with a 20% discount. With the passes you feel less robbed on days where the queues are long and rides are on and off because you can go back. The parking is also free on gold and above and it’s gotten frankly ridiculous in price year to year. Some restriction dates which are mostly bank holidays. I get 20% off resort hotels but they are still pricier than a local premier inn, holiday inn etc. and you can also get a decent deal to stay near Warwick Castle which is brilliant . I have done Blackpool Tower and the attractions in London also. (edited)

Yep agree. Went Chessington last week for basically the zoo & small rides.
We did all the big ones a few months ago but being able to go for a more chilled day or 2 is the major benefit to trying cram everything into one day.

Passes (&Parks) are definitely worse than they were 10 years ago though. Cost is higher, perks are lower (food/drink discount more restricted). We went with Gold this year as the others didn't really work well on dates, lots of restrictions below gold tier.

Once you have a membership do you still have to buy admission tickets?
How many people can enter the park with the family membership?
    trebor's avatar
Each membership is valid for one person to use with a photo of said person attached to that membership. You don’t need to purchase a tickets for the days you membership is valid but you do have to pre-book online (depending on availability this can be 5-10 minutes before you go or months in advance).

You are limited to a certain number of pre-booked slots at any one time e.g 3 per attraction for discovery passes, so you could be booked in for 3 visits to each of the (30+) attractions at once. Once you have visited an attraction, you can rebook for the same attraction again upto the limit of having three prebooked tickets per attraction (at the same time).

Worth noting that if you already have a pass, renewal is:

    Silver £119
    Good £169
    Platinum £229

So slightly cheaper to renew if already a member.

We won £500 last year so decided to get Merlin gold passes as a treat. We live approximately one hour from Alton Towers and Warwick Castle. Great value, we did Legoland twice, Warwick Castle once, Alton Towers about five times, Sea Life twice and everything in London once. Great value. Wouldn’t renew as we need a change of scene, but in a few years maybe again.

The discount on food and concessions is really good. The pizza buffet restaurant in Legoland and Alton Towers become really reasonable with the discounts.

Very much recommend for a British staycation for the year.
  9. Rob_Deeley's avatar
Offer is available up until 31st of December as well.
Maybe a good time to buy if you're in the market for them as buying in-between now and the New year will cover all the holidays.

What are the savings like comparative to early bird deals etc... (edited)

That's a great deal for families
  11. trebor's avatar
This is a good backup in case Black Friday or Christmas sales are not as good this year.
  12. BrianButterfield's avatar
They charge £15 for a hotdog, I hope they come free with this pass lol.
    WhiteElephant's avatar
With certain passes they offer a 10/20% discount on food purchased at the parks. It's not much, but every little helps (edited)
  13. mocmocamoc's avatar
Good value if you’ll use it and actually would, we live near Blackpool so loads of stuff to use it on. Couple of trips to the others, we get it every few years and hammer it for 12 months

I did this for me and my 4 kids last year, we did near attractions and the theme parks multiple times. One huge road trip in summer where we did loads to finish it off. Great value, free parking, discounts in shops/photos and I just had to worry about snacks and travel costs which made the rest of the year a breeze and always something to do. 180 for gold x5 was near 1000 but we got a years worth of entertainment and entry per attaction then worked out at 15-18ish as not everyone did all the days out.

I'd been eying these up for a couple of years, I finally bit last summer for me and 2 kids 6 & 8 when I had a trip to London booked, meaning I could make the most of it.
I purchased it start of August, so I've had two summers "worth", done everything except for Thorpe Park and some of the more adult parts of Alton Towers (as it wasn't appropriate for the kids).
It cost me £560 (gold) for the 3 of us with a work discount offer on purchase. For a lot of entertainment spread of the year, I cannot complain, I stopped bothering to track my "savings" (taking into account BOGOFs or online ticket prices rather than list price) after 3 months as I'd already broken even.
I'm based in Cheshire and despite a large portion of stuff being down London way, managed to make the most of it. Chessington was a highlight.
Will I be renewing again this year? No, but I'll certainly consider it again in a couple years time when we can do some of the "bigger" rides in Thorpe and Alton.
  17. Twosons's avatar
Does it ever get any cheaper than this does anyone have experience
    youngchap's avatar
It used to be £69. Apparently someone said on NHS they had that offer forever not on a specific date or period. However it looks like maybe they've increased the price now

£5 off fast track. what a joke. id like to see a 50% reduction off the standard price. If im purchasing an annual pass, i dont wanna be spend a year sitting in queues.
    loopylu9's avatar
The £5 off fast track is off one ride per park only. Basically each gold pass gets you 4 £5 off tokens. Doesn’t work on packages.
  22. glenandem's avatar
discovery pass works well for us being self employed and we take kids out of School all the time during term time, parks are generally nice and busy but like other comments we've noticed lack of staff, constant break downs at alton towers and just general cut backs and its showing!, saying that though we'd buy them again as gifts and activate them at the right time.
works out 2-3 times for our family and theyre paid for and we tend to do that alone at alton towers, we then get a trip into Thorpe and London eye, Shrek and Blackpool tower.
not done chessington yet either with the new jumanji ride!
