Advanced noise cancellation
Whether you’re flying long-haul or relaxing in a café, the WH-1000XM4 headphones deliver our advanced noise cancelling performance, keeping out even more high and mid frequency sounds.

Ambient Sound Control
Adjust ambient sound with the Sony | Headphones Connect app to cancel noise while still allowing through essential sounds, like transport announcements, when you’re listening on the move.

Wireless freedom, premium sound
LDAC transmits approximately three times more data (at the maximum transfer rate of 990 kbps) than conventional BLUETOOTH® audio, allowing you to enjoy High-Resolution Audio content in exceptional quality, as close as possible to that of a dedicated wired connection.

For everyday convenience, just Speak-to-Chat
As soon as you speak to someone, Speak-to-Chat automatically stops the music and lets in ambient sound so you can conduct a conversation – handy if you want to keep your headphones on, or your hands are full. Based on Precise Voice Pickup Technology, this smart feature uses five microphones built into your headphones and advanced audio signal processing to recognise and react to your voice. And once your chat is over, your music starts playing again automatically

Headphones that react to you
A proximity sensor in your headphones can detect whether you’re wearing them or not, then adapt playback accordingly to help save battery power. Take off your headphones and the music pauses automatically. Put the headphones back on and the music automatically resumes.

All day power and quick charging
With a huge 30 hours of battery life you’ll have enough power even for long trips. And if you need to top up in a hurry, you can get 5 hours’ worth of charge after just 10 minutes with the optional AC adapter

Swivel foldable structure
The ear cups swivel inwards so they pack up neatly in a compact case.

Carry case with cable
The supplied carry case is durable and includes a cable for wired listening.

Dolby Atmos experience
With a Sony WLA-NS7 wireless transmitter connected to a BRAVIA XR TV, your headphones create the ideal arrangement of phantom speakers all around you so you can enjoy a Dolby Atmos experience. Be immersed in the scene and feel right at the heart of the action.

I bought these from a deal on here due to the positive comments they get. I was actually quite disappointed by them, they felt cheap and the sound was barely any improvement over my soundcore Q45’s. It took a lot of eq to fix but the main problem is the very narrow sound stage and instrument separation. I’ve since bought the Sennheiser Momentum 4’s which are a big improvement in the quality of the materials, sound and separation, costing only £30 more than this deal. And now upgraded to the Bowers and Wilkins PX7 S2 for £197 which are the best of the bunch. Sonys do have the best noise cancellation but fall behind in everything else.

Agree have had the XM4's (& XM3's) and returned both due to squeaking/ creaking headbands which at at a price premium shouldn't be an issue. When searching to see if there was a fix was surprised how widespread the issue was.

Images 2 and 3 refer to the XM5s, not the XM4s (the first and last images) - just a heads up for people

As somebody who has never owned a pair of headphones worth over £40 how do these compare in terms of sound quality and value for money?
    wanderer_forest's avatar
Depends how much of an audiophile you are. A £40 pair are good enough. These sound twice as good but cost 4 times as much. There is a huge premium for noise cancellation where these are effectively the best in the market. Noise cancellation isn't for everyone, you get a dampening sound effect.

I have these (got them free due to an Amazon glitch) but only use them for movies and podcasts, I don't listen to music. The bass on these are great, they are very comfortable and light so don't weigh your head down, squeeze your ears too much and don't get overly hot like other headphones.
Connectivity is excellent - you'll see some expensive products like Bose have terrible apps and connectivity which matters these days.

It's a super reliable product. Packs nicely for travel.

Good price, got the XM5 for £196 in Jan from Very. I think not a lot of difference between the XM4 and XM5. A great headphone.

    Heat added.

Nope still working, just checked it. Just go through uni days to the Sony website and it was there

not really a headphone person, what does this do thats really stand out. Also does battery degrade or is it generally ok and can it be plugged in wired?
    sanmarinojR's avatar
Just get a Q30 .. with proper EQ they sound better then the Bose and Sony. The build quality is soso , but the NC is great. Best value and you will know if you need and like using these kind of stuff. Only then if you're not happy you can splurge. Which I don't recommend. Battery degrades like on everything , but these will easily last 5 years.
  12. bryn.glennie's avatar
These are phenomenal headphones, had mine since just after launch and still love them.. not even considering upgrading for a while.
    JimDiGriz's avatar
Yep. Really happy with mine, got them last year.
  13. monks's avatar
so many other headphones that are better..
    scott-chegg's avatar
    Yet you’ve recommended none
  14. McLeod95's avatar
Really like the look of them for this price but I'm still happy with my XM3s
  15. anyone4apint's avatar
Im a Bose fanboy and bought these in the airport a few weeks ago for £220, they are well worth it at that price, at this price they are a no-brainer. They are just as good as the Bose QC's that are £100 more. I prefer these to the newer v5 ones as they fold which is a huge deal if your traveling.
  16. brooker89's avatar
    Wooooahhhhh, what a deal!
  17. bainster1's avatar
Great price, but I'm another still happy with my XM3's and I'm more likely to wait for the XM5's sometime later
  18. Uranus's avatar
Coming up to 4 years since these launched.
Their replacements (xm5) came out 2 years ago.

So why are these still so expensive?
    Inphamous's avatar
Because they're that good. They hold their value because there hasn't been much improvement since then. (edited)
  19. Sewerprat's avatar
Sony cheaped out on the hinges with these, making them very creaky when you move your head. It's really annoying and is why I barely wear mine.
At this price point, metal hinges.should be the norm, not cheap plastic ones.
    victorovich1990's avatar
Yeah, hesitating on purchasing because of this as they're known to break. The hinge replacement parts are available on Ebay but you definitely expect better at this price.

On the other hand, Sony sell batteries for these and replacing those is simple (unlike e.g. Bose QC, which require soldering). (edited)

These headphones came out 4 years ago and haven't been any cheaper than this. I was hoping for bigger reductions, but it's not happening.
    OhTheMajesty's avatar
Well worth this price. Quality headphones
  21. PhoenixWright's avatar
The 10% discount applies to all headphones. The XM5s are just £237.15 if they are of interest.

How are these in terms of noise cancelling compared to the Apple AirPod pro 1st edition? I have no reference for the AirPod pros they seem really good but wondering if there is a whole other level of noise cancelling available out there!
    electriclinux's avatar
    They are very different products.
The Noise cancelling and sound quality are better in these but that is to be expected?
  31. deleted3009898's avatar
