Mine arrived this morning. Hmm, Not great. It's a bit better than a standard Echo. Base is muddy with little precision, medium and high frequencies seem to have a level of distortion at reasonable volumes. OK as a standalone smart speaker for general use but really not for long term listening pleasure. Mine will be offered out to family and friends and if they don't want it - returned to Amazon. I can understand why they've dropped the price. I can see lots of these being returned again. HotUKDeals landfill.

If you haven't already done so, try using the (rudimentary) equaliser in the alexa app to control the mix. The stereo spatial enhancement is on by default, it can be turned off - you still get spatial but only for the content encoded that way (not ordinary stereo) - many people prefer it off.
Just worth having a fiddle before you ditch it.

Mine arrived earlier, now sending it back. Thought it had set up fine, but wasn't responding to "Alexa", so rebooted it and stuck for hours on spinning blue rings. Couldn't factory reset it either. Oh well
    aenima46n2's avatar
After responding to comments on here, I convinced myself to buy another one.

Exactly the same thing happened to me - all A OK, but no response to Alexa - so rebooted, then just a blue light could not get it to enter manual set up mode.

You can get amazon customer service to call you from the Alexa app.

This is how they got mine working:

Turn off, wait a few minutes. Turn on and immediately hold down mute and volume down for twenty seconds, then (fingers off those two) hold down the action for twenty seconds. Unit should turn orange and say resetting device - set up should then complete on its own. Ask Alexa to check for software update.

Hope the same works for you (or anyone else).

Bit rubbish that a software update is required, when the amazon specifically says these units are tested and the software updated. I'd guess they'd just argue it was updated at the time of testing, but another is now needed.

Bought these refurbished for my firestick & dumb TV after several unhappy soundbar experience's ( quality, many remotes etc). Must say, well pleased, loud & good quality. The main downside is I have to wait 5 minutes when I turn them & the TV on for Alexa to connect everything, other than that no probs... You just set them up as home cinema & then use the volume on the fire TV. I use the setup with the TV off a lot at the moment to listen to music controlled via app on phone. The refurb side look like new.

I presume you are connecting via Bluetooth? My rule is IF possible to avoid Bluetooth THEN avoid Bluetooth! Fortunately here is a a way to do just that >

The fix would be to buy a cheap TOSLink Optical to 3.5mm connector, as the Echo Studio accepts optical via 3.5mm as well as standard audio signals. Then you configure on your TV the optical output as main audio output and job done, it should be instant then.

So you just need a cable such as this, the optical end plugs into your TV and the 3.5mm SPDIF end plugs in to the Echo Studio >

If you buy this one remember to click on the 10% voucher option by the price, to reduce the price down to £9.89 or £9.90

I got one of these for a similar price a couple of years ago, it’s a really great speaker. (edited)

Had one delivered this morning. Connected to my Fire Tv Cube straight away via the Home Cinema option and Wireless/BT connection. I can't say that it's a replacement for my soundbar though as it's not loud enough and doesn't pack enough bass for my liking.

I've ended up just using it as a speaker for my Echo Show (done via he Alexa app and the option to let Alexa choose the best output), which I didn't really need as that was connected to my Soundbar via BT, but makes use of it I guess.

Make sure you are using Wifi rather than Bluetooth. More channels and a much bigger dynamic range might make a difference for you.

From what I have read it seems like you might need to update the software to the latest to get the best sound? Just in case its something so simple before returning them
  8. EricStrongman's avatar
    This is a good speaker.
But for home cinema, why not buy a 2nd hands Samsung Q950a, I think you can get the whole set for £500
    I_Zebra's avatar
"Only" four times the price. No disrespect to the Samsung set but come on this is a deals site

Hmm tempted to swap my 2 living room dot 4 's I'm using with my projector for this, wondering if it's a big enough jump :/

I have this and would highly recommend.

Yeah, doesn't seem to trigger any other account offers. I have the £10 off amazon products from the prime feature use promo. It wouldn't apply that either (or to the Kindle I bought on Prime day!)

But still, great price for the best Alexa music experience out there. You beat me posting it by 5 mins! (edited)

Ahh we should share the love (heat) for this somehow.... but you can answer any negative vibes

Best price I've ever seen them at - great deal.
At this price its worth getting two and using them as stereo pair. This is what I have - they give my (much more expensive) hi-fi a run for it's money - recommended.

Only caveat is that I think Atmos / 3d only comes with the rest of the Amazon ecosystem - so only amazon music and prime video (not Spotify or Netflix etc).

Only thing is, the Sonos One can also be obtained at around this price point refurbished, and it's got most of the music streaming services built in with a slightly more subtle, arguably more refined, sound signature.
  12. bilo999's avatar
    Author
I'd also guess that you would need to use a device for some hours to bed the speakers in ?

And to go back a little on my previous comment comparing this to Sonos.... my broad view is that, this is the top of range when it comes to Echo sound equipment, but would be where Sonos devices start (i.e. their bottom of the range) .... if all that makes sense?

My overall point is that I'd not expect a massive amount for what this deal is costing, if I were paying full price, then I might expect a little more.

Don't buy it as a TV speaker via optical out. Great as a Bluetooth speaker.

These are great, have one in the kitchen and the music quality is excellent. Had no issues with them bricking themselves and they have always just worked.

How do these compare to Sonos 1s...

I’ll tell you when mine turns up, but we have a Sonos surround system and Sonos move speakers…. And if this half as good I’ll be happy, given this is at least one fifth of the price
  16. fastcarmaniac's avatar
Cheers op, ordered one to replace my Sonos one in the kitchen which has slowly started going deaf or not doing as it’s told!

I have been looking at these for ages, I really want one, but I have spent a load of money recently, I really dare not ask the wife, or even worse, tell her I bought one. I can’t say “I’ve had it ages” or “ it goes with the other black ones “.
Her brother has one and says it’s great, Come on someone, help me out here, please……..

Just say that it was a hot hotdeals deal and you could not resist …. And that if it’s no good you can send it back….. and now it’s here and heard … we should keep it ?

I bought the refurbished ones and they were great for just under a year, then an update completely bricked them. Amazon are refunding me, but I was only a few weeks away from some completely dead devices. Watch out for this!

That's because Amazon devs are utter imbeciles. I certainly regret investing in these woeful Echoes. (edited)

I have and love But.... I have the sub as well....q1 does anyone else find it v bass heavy? Q2 anyone else have the prob that it doesn't save its audio settings after I've turned the base down... Loses them each time I turn off the TV!

I also had to phone my internet provider to get the sub and the two speakers put on the same Wi-Fi network as my fire TV because I have a router that dynamically moves things between the two channels....
  20. jrwagh333's avatar
Any indication if these are v1 or V2?
    allanmark's avatar
Wondering this too, I had one back in 2019 and sold because I moved. Was wondering if this would be the same model
  21. dealhunter6k's avatar
I have 2 of these these in a pair with a sub, and they are great. I got the new white one for the bedroom and didn't notice any difference over the older ones.
    ZennZero's avatar
Was there actually a hardware refesh? My reading suggests it was canceled and they instead did a firmware upgrade against the existing design.

Shame can't seem to trade in my echo gen 4.

I’ve bit, I’ve thought about it before but at this price it’s a must.

Shame there are no white ones otherwise I would of opted for one to compliment new kitchen

These are a brilliant bit of kit , I have mind also linked to my fire stick

I purchased one when they were on a deal Xmas time. New for £120.
I didn't rate it, sounded too bassy at times and not enough bass at others.

I sent it back after a few days of use.
I now have the echo 5 with improved sound or whatever it they call it. And I think it's better than the studio. The bass is better across all levels however still not as much as I'd like so I ordered an echo sub, but that kept disconnecting so sent that back too. So I'm left with the echo 5, it's great for everyday listening and even made for some good fun with alexa at a garden party.

Don't let my review put you off. Many people expect differently and require differently than others. So no harm in trying for yourself whilst at this price.

FYI voted hot as its the cheapest around at the moment with the confidence you can send it back if not happy
  28. AshleyCockerton's avatar
I have the white V2 along with a sub connected via a fire cube. They are brilliant, very loud and decent sound. Please note, the refurb units are likely to be V1 units (no atmos)
    aenima46n2's avatar
V1 always did have Atmos - supposed upgrade for the V2 was an enhanced spatial audio, but V1 has had it via a software update anyways. There may be some differences in V1 / V2 hardware used under the hood - but there is no difference in functionality.
(see here :is it worth upgrading to a Echo V2)
Most people who have had both (on Av forums) can't tell any difference in the sound between the two.

Amazon doesn't even list the different gen / year versions since the update - like it does with the other echo products. I think a lot of the 'refurbs' are just customer returns on the free trial. period, so it could be V1 or V2, but yeah if anyone is bothered the only way to be sure its a V2 is order a new white one.
