OP should mention the offer starts from tomorrow in store.
    Catching a few ppl out

    Good deal.
Sainsburys large birds are minimum weight 1.9kg. Often they're around 2.1kg.
Compare with Tesco large chickens usually at the lower end of 1.6kg to 1.9kg.

    I like a big bird

My wife just tried to get this before work today (05/03), but it didn't scan through. The manager said the deal is available online for delivery from tomorrow, but in store it won't scan through until tomorrow. Don't know how true it is, but maybe wait?
    steveuk145's avatar
Yes I’m in here now and no nectar price advertised!

Please keep this in mind, Sainsbury's being one of the supermarkets mentioned in this very recent article: Millions of store chickens suffer burns from excrement bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-68406398 (edited)
    blahblahblah1234's avatar
It's nothing new, the same news stories circulate every few years.
Chickens with urine burns on their legs have been a thing for a long time. They used to scrape the burns off with a grater to make them more sellable. Probably just chop the legs now above the critical point.

The damage done by publishing these type of shock stories, it temporarily causes a drop in demand for chickens at supermarkets, resulting in a surplus of supply and many chickens going to waste.
That's exactly why we have this half price offer, and good news for those who like a roast chicken!

Not in all stores yet, no labelling on the shelf and the offer didn't work on the tills...

This deal won't start in store until tomorrow Tim

Bought 4 medium at 10.00am shelves full, froze 3 , just had one , very tasty, but ignore the cooking instructions or it will be very dry, mine was 1.6kg @ 180c for one hour, meat thermometer said 69degrees , minimum 75 in parts so cooked perfect FYI 65 degrees is cooked, stood for a while upside down (to let juices run thru the breast)................yes I enjoy cooking

When a deal is too good to be true, someone or something is going to suffer. Be it the farmer, the environment (River Wye), let alone the chicken.
By all means, it's a godsend for struggling families but it's not sustainable in the long term.

Well said. We have chickens at home in a lovely enclosure giving them a lovely free range life and they supply us with some excellent eggs, and I know farmers will buy feed in huge quantities but knowing how much we spend on quality feed it astounds me how farmers can feed and grow a bird to commercial size, only to sell its dead for not much money at all.
The whole value chain needs an overhaul and consumers should be paying a better (much higher) price for the bird if they want reassurance they are buying a quality product.

How sainsburys can pay a farmer to raise and feed a chicken, kill it, transport and package it, and make a profit is a mystery to me.

Dread to think about the life the ckichen had, what its eaten and the quality of the meat :/
    blahblahblah1234's avatar
Sainsburys selling these as a loss leader, they'll be taking the hit.
  10. stethorn's avatar
Did anyone ever actually find out why the chicken crossed the road ?
    blahblahblah1234's avatar
... because it's poultry in motion! (edited)

This is what is wrong with modern life. This is so cheap that we have lost that we care about other lives of different animals. We just care about prices.
    mfactor's avatar
Yep we do, a lot of us struggle to afford decent food these days, you must of missed the memo about the cost of living crises....

It does get a bit annoying when middle class animal lovers who can afford a tenner for a corn fed organic chicken , blather on about people trying to put food on the table....

  13. Amoykateer's avatar
Hot! I'll be buying about 4 at least, butcher them at home, clean, wash, dry and freeze
    Laxet's avatar
Please stop washing your chicken. It does nothing to make your food safer to eat, it just spreads bacteria over you and your kitchen. (edited)
  14. peacemann's avatar
At the store price is £5.50
    Cheeky_Chap's avatar
You are referring to the standard price. Does it not also show the Nectar price?
  15. Reality's avatar
Impressive. This is going to get hot.
    Cheeky_Chap's avatar
Obviously, it's important to cook chicken thoroughly!

52325869-JpNJL.jpgCrazy prices. Cheaper than any frozen/fast food (should help families eat healthier). The farmers can't be paid a fair deal though, unless Sainsbury's are taking a hit with profits to encourage spending on other products.

1.5 kg of it is water and antibiotics bon appetit!
    Moonmonkeys's avatar
So it rehydrates and gets rid of bugs? It's like a superfood! Thanks for the recommendation

Think of the farmer that has to try and make money selling chickens. Can you imagine the sheer volume to make money?!

    Loads on shelf this evening

    Managed to get 8 large

Before all the people freak out about over buying, that's 4 for my mums house and 4 for our house.

Stunning deal. Also managed to grab some yellow sticker deals too at same time.

Will be trying again in a couple of days.

God bless my chest freezer. (edited)

  28. dixonofdockbean's avatar
Shame you can never get a good deal on free range chickens. Although thankfully these chickens have a 'happier' life (happier than what I'm not sure?!?)
    DJ8's avatar
45 chickens to a 2ft cage, rather than the usual 50. So much happier
  29. break21's avatar
Just makes me wonder what's wrong with it. The quality of chicken has gone downhill over the years and decades and the fact it's still this cheap (even at regular price) while the cost everything else has increased drastically says a lot.
    gajamaflake's avatar
is it not just a loss leader to get you into the shop and spend more. hardly anyone is going to go in and just get this are they
